Episode 4 - Navigating Challenges: Living in a Foreign Country for Your Dream Retirement in Mexico with Janet Blaser

Listen Later

In this episode of the Dream Retirement in Mexico podcast, host Risa Morimoto is joined by guest journalist and author Janet Blaser.  She shares her experiences living in Mazatlan, Mexico.

Despite facing challenges that come with living in a foreign country, including culture and a language barrier, Janet expresses her happiness and enjoyment living in Mazatlan.

Mazatlan is described as a busy city with a working-class feel surrounded by the Sonora Desert. Janet advises listeners to do personal research and check expat Facebook pages to find the right place to settle. She also discusses the rental process and what you need to do in order to successfully find your new home.

Janet emphasizes that an apartment in Mexico may not come with appliances, so tenants have to purchase their own. Regarding safety, she believes that the negative portrayal of Mexico in the US media is exaggerated and highlights that millions of people live normal lives unaffected by the country's crises.

Janet shares that living in Mexico can offer a higher quality of life with less stress and financial worries.  She edited an anthology of essays, "Why We Left: An Anthology of American Women Expats" for anyone interested in the relocation experience, not just American women despite the title.  The episode concludes with an overview of Mazatlan's attractions, including its beautiful beaches, colonial section, and vibrant expat community.
