This week marks the 30th anniversary of the nationwide demonstrations known as the 8-8-88 Uprising, which came close to toppling the then-military government. The months-long protests ended only after the junta launched a coup in September 1988.

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is Myanmar’s best-known female political prisoner, but countless other women have been imprisoned for their political views.

This week Doh Athan meets some of these women, and hears about the sacrifices they made in order to play a role in the country’s pro-democracy movement.
