In this week’s episode, I sit down with the amazing Norman Varney of AV RoomService.
Norman is an acoustic consultant who has designed over 500 critical listening rooms around the world, starting back to when he owned an audio retail store.
After that, he became director of the Custom Installation and Home Theater divisions at Music Interface Technologies. There he designed the innovative and elaborate electrical system for the Scoring Stage of Lucas Film’s Skywalker Ranch.
Norman then became a senior engineer with the Acoustic Systems Business at the Owens Corning Science & Technology Center. He spent a considerable amount of his time there testing in anechoic chambers, reverberation chambers, and acoustic labs in general.
In this episode, Norman and I discussed some common acoustic myths, acoustic listening tests at Owens Corning, how extravagant home theaters can get, the difficulty in designing an immersive playback room, the built-in resonant point in American home construction, and so much more.
