Episode 82: Service to Others is Good for Your Heart!

Listen Later

My husband Todd and I recently visited a part of Florida that was recently affected by a devastating hurricane. While we were a bit shocked at how many people were still recovering from the storm, and reflected on how long it will really take to get back to a semblance of normal, we were inspired by the service of so many who willingly gave of their time and resources to help their neighbors in the recovery effort.

It put me in mind of how serving others, true altruism, is so good for our heart, not to mention our overall wellbeing. When we help others, the chemical oxytocin is released into our bloodstream. You may not know the scientific name, but think of the feeling you get when you touch someone you love. That's oxytocin.

This episode is on the shorter side, but I was so moved by what we saw, I wanted to share a bit of our experiences with you!

In this episode, you'll learn:

-Hurricane recovery a case study in the benefits of service for the heart...02:20

-The Love Hormone (oxytocin) is addictive...07:50

-Servant leadership reflects God's love for us...09:30

-Does our heart get bigger when we give?...13:15

-And much more...
