This week, we're watching Blindspot, a cop procedural that has no real grasp of science, tattooing, or how to make cops look like the good guys. We discuss the uncomfortable violence and legal violations that seem to define the genre while also noting the things about this show that make it seem like someone, somewhere, must be fucking with us. (Patterson's dad is canonically Bill Nye. He is not played by Bill Nye. He is, in fact, Bill Nye.) Our inability to like Kurt, understand the plot, or stop calling one of the characters by the name of a Survivor player is probably quite confusing, but we like to think it's endearing and entertaining. Will Kurt ever stop being a tired cop stereotype? Is the throuple the finale promised really canon? How does a drug that wipes your memory slowly work its way up your brain stem in an attempt to make you forget how to breathe? The answers to all this and more as we play "is this terribly done cop propaganda, or does this show actually understand its own conspiracy plot line," a one-of-a-kind game show that is very easy to win.

This week, Natasha makes Jessica watch The Legend of Vox Machina which is the cartoon adaptation of the first Critical Role campaign. We dive deep into what works about this adaptation and what doesn't. We discuss what feels too D&D for a TV show, what the medium changes about the story, and how it changes our perception of the characters. We ask questions like: is a dragon really something no one has ever heard of before? Can you really just play a big dog in D&D? (Legitimate question. This is important for my next D&D character.) Can you be straight in D&D? And the age-old mystery of whether or not you need to seduce a woman who is already in bed with you. (I'm not saying it wouldn't be appreciated, it just seems like overkill.) We discuss the downfall of needing a pilot episode in a sitcom, playing to stereotypes to make quick connections for your audience in a short show, and if you can really make a stranger a Tinder profile in an instant (this should be a competition on a dating show tbh). We discuss what is happening in the it-just-might-be-queer sports anime genre (which seems to be the only anime genre we watch) and how queer representation is handled in media. The truly insane plot of this show takes us for a wild ride as we try to decipher what happened to Langa's dad, if Shadow burns Reki's skateboard or if that just kinda happens, and what the goddamn fuck is happening with Adam. We touch on the dub vs. sub debate by mostly loving the buckwild dub of this show. (Jessica has seen more random clips of the dub than she has of this show in its entirety. This is just science. And if we're going to give cartoon characters arbitrary gender markers, they should at least be scientifically accurate. I mean, think of the children. (No, really, think of the children. Zim steals organs in this show but really? That is not nearly as traumatizing as the cultural pressure to fit into gendered stereotypes.) This week, Jessica forces Natasha to watch Dawson's Creek, a teen drama about seeing a hot girl, thinking a girl is hot, looking at a hot girl, seeing yet another hot girl, looking at that hot girl, maybe... talking to a hot girl? Listen to Natasha recap this episode in which a hot girl comes to town and is looked at while another hot girl (who no one realizes is hot yet) gets upset about the other hot girl and asks a boy about his masturbation habits as a test of their friendship (which is deteriorating because of the hot-girl-conundrum). 

Look, we'll level with you. This show did not age well. The pilot episode is massively outdated, offensive, and just... really fucking odd. Listen to us discuss this fucked up plotline that feels like a teenage boy wrote it, how this show feels massively old-fashioned and still manages to be weirdly progressive, and why Dawson's Creek feels original even though it does its best to emulate everything that comes before and after it. Will Jessica manage to convince Natasha that this show is tame? Will Natasha convince Jessica that this show is unbearably bad? Will we ultimately agree that this show accurately portrays just how annoying teenagers actually are? You'll have to listen to find out.
