  • People Pleasing and Wanting to be Thin
In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast, Deb, Leila and I talk about the many ways we try to control people by changing our weight and how we can stop the "need" for people pleasing.
I've tried to make people like me more by losing weight for most of my life. I thought I could impress people with my weight loss (and that is really how the whole diet drama started for me) and I did - but instead of being liked more, I lost all of my friends and social contacts.
There are many more ways we try to please people with our weight and - surprise - it always backfires. Deb and Leila share their own stories of what losing weight did to their social connections and what happened when they let go of the need to be thin at all costs.
If people like us solely for our bodies, then there's something majorly wrong in the relationship.
Remember that we are more than our bodies and if we hold on to our bodies as a status symbol, we will ultimately lose because bodies change every single day.
We also talk about joy suckers and joy givers, why your life and not your body should be your project and why making food a fight is not going to help anyone.
Instead of trying to hide your insecurities by pleasing people, it's important to develop emotional intelligence and use your body as a signal to navigate how you deal with the pressures of life and staying true to yourself.
Deb's got a new blog called "We are more than good enough" and she's been on a writing roll! Check it out here.

  • What does it mean to be Feminine in today's world?
In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast, Leila and I talk about the Beauty Myth, Feminine ideals, the Feminine Mystique, the divide within the body positive movement and so much more.
Even though women all over the world have made great movements toward equality, there's still more work to be done. The more powerful women became, the more the pressures to look a certain way increased.
It's not enough to anymore to be a powerful woman (whatever that means to you), you also have to look a certain way, be toned, be thin, have big breasts, a tiny waste and a J-Lo butt.
And instead of working with each other, women are still working against each other, hurting each other, judging in other for choosing to live their truth.
It's time for all of us to step it up, clean up our own mess and begin to love each other, lift each other up and allow each and every single one of us to be who we want to be.

  • The message Oprah's Weight Watchers' ad sends out to the world
Oprah's Weight Watchers' ads are all over American TVs these days creating more frustration than inspiration in women everywhere.
Ever since Oprah got financially involved in the weight loss industry, there's been an outcry amongst those of us who do not dedicate their life to achieving thinness at all costs. Looking at the claims of eternal happiness after the weight is finally off, we have to start directing the world-wide diet conversation in a more profound and healing direction.
Oprah has power and she uses it to send a clear message out into the world: no matter how rich and influential you are, no matter how much good you've done throughout your life, no matter how much you have achieved, you're not a whole person until you've finally lost those pounds that you've been trying to lose for decades.
Well, messages like this, messages sent by powerful women in the spotlight are extremely dangerous and harmful to women everywhere.
The truth is that you can be happy without losing weight.
The truth is that you can be fulfilled without being thin.
And the truth is that you will not heal your issues with food by going on a weight loss diet.
The only thing that happens if you continue to strive for thinness is a bigger gap between you and your body's wisdom. You're detaching more and more from the living and ever-changing frame that is keeping you alive.
In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison, we discuss the impacts of influencers' decision to join the weight loss industry's games and what we can do in order to build resilience in ourselves and stop the constant judgment of women that is going on in this world.

  • Weight Bias and Stigmatization – Let's Talk About It
In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast, Deb, Leila and Anne-Sophie take on the subject of weight bias.
There are so many (long debunked) "facts" circulating around weight that judging those who are not stick thin is a favorite past time of many and is - sadly - the last socially acceptable form of discrimination in our society.
It's time to rise above those ridiculous biases and start seeing people who don't fit into the narrow beauty standards of our time for what they are: living, breathing human beings who deserve all of our respect and love - just like everyone else.
Time and time again, it's been shown that weight and health do not correlate and instead it's our habits, our way of living our life that define true health. You can be thin and be extremely unhealthy and you can be heavier and be the picture of health.
Carrie Fisher said it best when she tweeted that youth and beauty are not accomplishments. We have to stop allowing others to perpetuate the myth that having a certain body shape means being a superior human being. We have to stop hating on each other and instead acknowledge the truth that we're all different and just because some people make changing their body shape their world, it doesn't mean that others have to follow suit and live their life in the constant chase of having the "perfect" body.
After all, you can live a perfectly happy and long life without having a sick pack or looking like a fitness model. It's time for all of us to stop this circus and lift each other up instead of tearing each other down.

  • How to Stop Sabotaging Yourself
When you’re a woman, you know of all the forms you can self-sabotage your diet: basically, if you eat, you sabotage your life. Why would you ever do that?
I am kidding, of course. But that is what we’re being told: we shouldn’t eat, shouldn’t look like this or that and when we do, we lose.
So, if you feel like you’re constantly self-sabotaging on the way to healing, ask yourself these questions:
Are the standards you have set for yourself even achievable?
When does self-sabotage set in for you? What does self-sabotage even mean for you? What’s the goal here, really? Perfectionism – all or nothing? You cannot fall off the wagon, if you don’t have one, so what is your wagon?
The answer is to stop trying to be perfect and to surrender to the reality of life.
What do you really believe about yourself?
Do you believe you’re unlovable, bad, undeserving, stupid, not good enough, deficient?
Here is the thing: you will always act upon who you believe yourself to be. If you truly loved yourself you wouldn’t sabotage yourself because you’d know that you only deserve the best for yourself (and the best is NOT weighing a certain amount when it is the complete wrong weight for your body!). If you believe you don’t deserve to have a happy body, you won’t have one. If you believe you don’t deserve to be free of your obsession with food, you’ll screw things up.
The answer is to heal your core wounds.
Are you scared of successful healing?
Embrace fear and hesitation when trying something new. Binging every night, going on a new diet every Monday, restricting to the point of going slightly insane, all those actions keep us safe. They’re self-soothing, self-protecting. The struggle we’re in right now is SAFE. Often times we don’t do something beneficial because what we do right now feels great to our body.
The answer is to make it easy on yourself by doing fun stuff, by creating habits. Create emotional freedom, so that you don’t have to protect yourself or soothe yourself anymore.
Are you living life or living a diet? Are you still stuck in the dieting mindset?
That - of course - is the number one obstacle on your way to letting go of self-sabotage. If you still believe in diets, if weight loss is still your number 1 goal, you'll continue to sabotage yourself as your eyes are on the wrong prize.
The answer is to stop dieting once and for all and instead begin creating a life that is worth living.
Listen to this week's episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast for more tips and tricks on how to stop sabotaging your healing process.

  • Being Thin is Meaningless with Debi Oswald
In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast, Debi Oswald shares her story of regaining her life after decades of going from one diet to the next.
Deb is an art teacher, photographer, all around creative person, wife, mom of 3, grandma of 4, an avid kayaker and such a great friend.
I met Deb more a few years ago when she joined one of my free programs and we hit it off pretty much right away. Her desire to heal and change has blown me away many times. Deb wanted freedom, she worked for it and she now lives it. It's been inspiring to watch her become even more phenomenal than she was when we first met.
    Enjoy our conversation.
    We talk about:
The moment she began to have a negative view of her body
The many ways she tried to manipulate her weight over the years
Her fears around not begin thin and what her quest to weight loss was really all about
The craziness behind reaching her goal weight and the lesson she learned when she hit it
Her desire to eat perfectly and what it did to her life
The reason she decided to stop dieting once and for all
Her experience in the Body-Love Wellness Circles
What has changed for her since she swore off diets
How she experienced the transition phase between restricting and always being on a diet and eating what she wants when she wants
    Why being thin is meaningless
    And so much more
