In November's edition of In on the Act, Joe Ollech and Toby Boncey, barristers at Falcon Chambers, discuss Part 8 of the Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill. The Bill, currently at report stage in the House of Commons, makes provision for local authorities to let empty commercial properties via auction if certain criteria have been met.

  • Bricks & Mortar: Graduate and apprentice surveyors discuss their journeys into real estate

In 2019, EG brought together a group of people embarking on their journeys in real estate and has since published regular features charting their progression. • Voice of the Region: Pub special – In with the inn crowd

Pubs have witnessed a remarkable comeback post-lockdown with the public viewing the sector with a renewed sense of importance, although challenges undoubtedly lie ahead, according to Fleurets director and head of national agency James Davies.

Fleurets currently leads the Radius On Demand Rankings for the UK’s hotel and leisure sector, with almost 300,000 sq ft of space transacted this year. Davies believes pubs have enjoyed a honeymoon period in the post-lockdown period, with many new units opening up in what were traditional retail spaces.

However, he also believes the sector needs help with VAT rates and with the ability to hire overseas workers if it is to overcome the recessionary storm clouds currently gathering.

  • EG Like Sunday Morning: Chunky chips for the hacked off

Piers Wehner is joined by Pui-Guan Man and Tim Burke for this week's trawl though the news.

CREFC has reported that prices are being "chipped" by 20 to 40%. The big agents are suffering from a $400m drop in earnings from capital markets. And everyone is "hacked off" with the abrupt demise of investment zones.

Plus, a quiz that asks all the important questions: who is the owner of property's fishiest feet, and why is Landsec's Cardinal Place suddenly sweaty?

  • EG’s Office Politics: Return of the Gove-rnment

McClary and Roberts round up the big winners of the night, and all the work that went in to putting on a show - including the effort required to achieve a net zero awards ceremony.

In addition, Roberts offers insights into the busy life of an event planner, the qualities required and a little advice for anyone considering it as a career.

  • EG Like Sunday Morning: Will real estate benefit from the ”dullness dividend”?

Jess Harrold is joined by Pui-Guan Man and Piers Wehner to round up the events of a week which has involved a new prime minister for the UK in Rishi Sunak, and a return of Michael Gove to the role of levelling up secretary.

But what will these two seemingly safe pairs of hands mean for property? As we approach Halloween, is the market still spooked? And can Sunak and Gove offer fresh treats... or the same old tricks?

Plus, a delve through the EG archives results in a quiz that taxes Man and Wehner to the limits of their memory.

  • Bricks & Mortar: Madison Berkeley’s Nina Zeilerbauer and Christine Scott discuss real estate recruitment

EG’s Sarah Jackman last caught up with Madison Berkeley’s Nina Zeilerbauer in November 2021 when the recruitment market in real estate was buoyant, counter offers were common place and candidates were weighing up multiple job offers. Almost a year on and with the UK’s economic climate changing, does the same hold true?

Along with Madison Berkeley’s Christine Scott, Sarah and Nina discuss the last 12 months, look at emerging trends such as the growing demand for candidates with ESG-related skillsets and ponder how the recruitment market might develop over the coming months.
