  • In on the Act: Guy Fetherstonhaugh KC reflects on how the rent arrears arbitration scheme has worked in practice

Joining Sarah Jackman for this month’s edition of In on the Act is EG columnist and joint head of Falcon Chambers Guy Fetherstonhaugh KC. And the topic this month: the Commercial Rent (Coronavirus) Act and the rent arrears arbitration scheme established under it for the recovery of ring-fenced rent arrears.

Regular listeners will know that Guy and Sarah first spoke about the Act in April’s podcast and, now that the window for instructing arbitrators has closed, they look at what has happened since and whether the scheme might pave the way for greater use of arbitration as a method of dispute resolution in the future.

  • EG Like Sunday Morning: The trans-Atlantic edition

Jess Harrold is joined by editor Sam McClary from New York, and city reporter Chanté Bohitige from London, for the latest weekly round-up.

McClary shares her energising experiences at CREtech in the Big Apple - as well as a sprinkling of Hollywood magic in the form of a REIT dedicated to buying industrial land and developing it for film studio space.

Meanwhile, as the political and economic turmoil back home continues, Bohitige surveys the current mood, with some encouraging news on take-up and rents in the West End, and some major pharmaceutical giants eyeing space in the capital.

They may be an ocean apart, but can they be separated in the quiz of the week?

  • TECHTALK: A propco, VC and tech solution meet at a downtown pier

In this episode of the EG Property Podcast, recorded live at CRETech NYC, EG editor Samantha McClary brings together three very different attendees to talk about their views on real estate, tech and the current market.

Listen in to hear from GPE’s head of innovation James Pellatt with innovation manager – and one of this year’s batch of very impressive EG rising stars -  Ella Walter-Pavlou as they share the property owner view,  why they’ve come out to NYC this week and what they’ll be taking home.

Pilabs’ and Spire Ventures’ Faisal Butt gives the VC view and shares his view on what start-ups need to focus on to make sure they get their share of investment.

While Jeremy Bernard, Americas chief executive of Essensys, shares the exhibitor view and gives us a little more insight on how collaboration is key when it comes to the growth of proptech.

And a few final words from McClary on some standout insights for her.

  • TECHTALK: Why diversity matters most in bumpy times

A big first day at CREtech NYC as thousands from around the globe made their way to Pier 36 on the Hudson River to talk tech, climate, investment and the big issues facing the industry.

In this special podcast, recorded live from the show, EG editor Samantha McClary shares insights from CREtech chief executive Michael Beckerman as he kicks off proceedings and some big thoughts on the market and the importance of diversity from Hines’ Laura Hines-Pierce and BentallGreenOak’s Sonny Kalsi.

Recordings were done onsite, not in the usual EG studio so listeners may need to lean in a little. But, as always, we promise it is worth it.

  • Bricks & Mortar: Tallulah Bannerman on winning the 2022 Women in Property National Student Award

EG’s Bricks & Mortar returns to the airwaves this week for its Autumn schedule. And what better way to start back than by catching up with the winner of the 2022 Women in Property National Student Award, Tallulah Bannerman, a fourth year architecture student at the University of Edinburgh.

The award programme, which invites universities to nominate their top female students studying on a built environment degree course, is now in its 16th year, with over 1,400 students having been through the programme.

Bannerman and Bricks & Mortar host, Sarah Jackman, discuss the award, Bannerman’s journey into architecture and how she hopes to develop her career once she finishes at Edinburgh.

  • Scrapping the mayor: How will Bristol fare under new leadership?

Bristol’s electorate has spoken: the role of city mayor will be dropped when Marvin Rees finishes his term of office in 2024. It will be replaced by a committee system in which decisions will be ratified by groups of councillors rather than by a cabinet appointed by the mayor. Supporters of the change hope it will allow for a more democratic form of government.

In this 55-minute podcast, EG’s guests discuss how Bristol reached this point and what it means for development in the city. Will it slow things down or will it help pave the way for getting Bristol’s future growth right?

Joining associate editor Julia Cahill are:

Jonathan Lambert, director, development, Savills Bristol

John Savage, executive chairman, Bristol Chamber of Commerce & Initiative

Christine Townsend, councillor – Green Party, Bristol City Council

  • TECHTALK: Fifth Wall’s Brendan Wallace on the evolution of proptech

In this episode of the EG Property Podcast EG editor Samantha McClary is warming up for the upcoming CREtech NYC conference in Manhattan by reconnecting with Fifth Wall’s Brendan Wallace.

The pair last caught up in April 2021 as Wallace outlined his for a new climate fund. You can listen to that conversation here.

In this 45-minute conversation Wallace shares thoughts on the coming of age of proptech and together the pair ponder whether, with the unique role that the built environment has to play in the environmental survival of the planet, proptech will eventually evolve into climate tech.

And all bets are on for whether Wallace’s predictions about what will be the big topics of conversation at CRETech come true.

  • EG Like Sunday Morning: True-stepping all the way to Greggs

Jess Harrold is joined by editor Sam McClary and deputy editor Tim Burke for the latest weekly round-up podcast.

Burke offers a market update, as economic turmoil continues to have an impact on real estate - and, in much brighter news, shares details of the EG team taking part in Steptober for LandAid - EG: Pimp My Stride. Once you've listened, be sure to sponsor them at: https://join.landaid.org/fundraisers/egpimpmystride

McClary discusses what she has learned about the success story that is Greggs in this week's EG Interview - and why things are looking up for the RICS.

But who will be the most sure-footed in the quiz of the week?

Once you're done, be sure to brighten your Sunday with some required listening for this week's episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ3tNCwUvSQ

  • Labs and London: Creating the space to meet life sciences demand

Demand for life sciences space in London is far outstripping supply – but high-profile schemes on the horizon offer a glimpse at new hubs and clusters across the capital.

In this 40-minute discussion, recorded during LREF week with the support of JLL, EG’s guests discuss the outlook for life sciences in the city, the hurdles to creating new real estate and why the capital must collaborate with, rather than compete against, other regional centres of excellence.

Joining deputy editor Tim Burke are:

    • Sven Bunn, life sciences programme director, Barts Health NHS Trust
  • Matt Fitter, investor and developer lead, life sciences, JLL
  • Ivana Poparic, head of cluster development, MedCity
  • James Sheppard, managing director, Kadans

  • Veganism for buildings: Is retrofit or redevelopment the answer?

In this episode of the EG Property Podcast, recorded live at the London Real Estate Forum, EG editor Samantha McClary sits down with five specialists from across the sector to make the case for regeneration or restoration (or retrofit) of buildings.

With a clear focus from the industry to do the right thing when it comes to climate change, there is an increasing proportion of refurbishments taking place rather than full scale development. An increasingly loud voice that is anti knock it down and build it up – see plans for M&S’s HQ on Oxford Street as an example – has left many in the development and planning world, unsure of what is expected of them.

Listen in to understand more about the case for and against knocking it down and starting again to deliver better and how the argument for redevelopment versus retrofitting is eerily similar to that of veganism versus an omnivorous diet.

Helping figure out the answer are:

    • Ali Abbas, managing director, head of UK, Art-Invest
  • Chris Cummings, director, Savills Earth, Savills
  • Derek Griffin, head of acquisitions, Whitbread
  • William Seymour, partner – real estate, Shoosmiths
  • Katharine Woods, associate, DP9
