Deep connection with their clients, maintained consistently and not abandoned the second money gets tight, because clients can feel when you need something from them. Total clarity on the results they deliver and how to get there, with marketing that says so. A network where every single person knows exactly what they do, not just the inner circle. A refusal to quit that shows up as trying three new approaches instead of one, and trying each like it will actually work. And the ability to problem solve without panicking.

Emily is a great esthetician. She trained other estheticians at Heyday, she gets real results in the treatment room, and she had a clientele that adored her and books that were mostly full.

Everyone tells you to niche down. Almost nobody tells you when, or what it actually costs you emotionally. In this solo episode Brittany walks through both. First the rule she gives every client: do not take a service off your menu just because you’re tired of it. You wait until demand for the work you actually want is so high that you can’t fit new clients in, and until then you market like your life depends on it. She explains why offering lashes and waxing and facials all at once quietly destroys your profitability as a solo esthetician, why mismatched service times wreck your books more than any pricing problem, and why it takes six months to a year of consistent marketing before you see your books shift, which is normal and not a sign that nothing is working. She also says the thing nobody wants to hear, which is that at some point you simply have to meet new people, and there is no easier way. Then she goes into the part of niching down that nobody talks about: telling clients you’ve had for three, five, six years that you no longer offer the service that brought them to you. It can feel like throwing away someone who gave you everything. Brittany shares the reframe that helps, stories from her own career about teams she loved and left behind, and permission to feel all of it. Tyler Card is the first male guest on this podcast, and he brought a story worth hearing. Tyler is a licensed esthetician and a chemist, the owner of Skinfinity in Columbia, Missouri, an international Skin Games award winner for acne and compromised barriers, and the person behind the skincare crash courses you've probably seen on Instagram. He came out of high school with no plan and nobody in his family who had gone to college, found skincare while working the front desk at Massage Envy, fried his own face with a 30-step routine, and decided during the pandemic that if he made it through he was going to esthetician school. He did, then went back and finished the chemistry degree too. In this conversation he and Brittany get into the real mechanics of building a solo esthetician business: why he spent a year at Ulta's brow bar before going out on his own and why he's grateful he did, how he offered everything and ended up hating 80 percent of his own menu, the overspending and undercharging trap that keeps new estheticians from ever breaking even, and the one paid ad he ran that produced nothing next to a free local Facebook post that produced 50 bookings. He also talks about doubling his following in a couple of months by finally making content he would actually watch, the customized skincare routine analysis that turned into his most loyal retail clients, how he works with his ADHD instead of against it, and what competing at the Skin Games taught him about confidence being self-trust rather than applause.
