Among Sensex stocks, SBI and IndusInd Bank were the top losers, falling over 4%. HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC, Tech Mahindra, UltraTech Cement and ICICI Bank also ended with cuts. However, HUL, Maruti, Tata Steel, NTPC and Sun Pharma managed to end with gains.

Gains in auto and IT stocks were offset by the losses in index heavyweight Reliance and banking stocks

The BSE Sensex index ended 320 points or 0.53% higher at 60,941, while Nifty50 rose 91 points or 0.50% to settle at 18,118

Led by a favourable credit cycle, bank stocks have been among the top performers in the last few months. In a recent report, global brokerage firm BNP Paribas had picked HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank in the order of preference. It had also said that asset-specialist plays such as IndusInd Bank, AU Small Finance Bank and City Union Bank have the greatest possibility of delivering positive surprises driven by credit growth.

The BSE Sensex index ended 237 points or 0.39% lower at 60,662, while Nifty50 fell 80 points or 0.44% to settle at 18,027.

Going by the numbers of IT majors, the quarterly earnings season has begun on a positive note. Despite heavy selling by FIIs, Nifty ended 0.5% higher during the week.
