The Dream Journal

Ethical Dream Sharing with Rev. Geoff Nelson

Listen Later

We focus on how to support each other respectfully as we explore our dreams without unduly influencing or belittling each other. Geoff starts out by sharing some incidents that sparked his interest in ethics. He then shares some of the principles of the Clearness Committee which was written in the 1660s as a guideline for the Quaker community to support spiritual seekers in their midst. One principle is that the supporters are encouraged to ask probing questions rather then directive questions.  Geoff and I are both members of the Ethics Committee at the IASD (International Association for the Study of Dreams), and we speak about the IASD Ethic Statement written in the late 1990s. You can read the ethics statement at www.ASdreams.org/ethics-and-confidentiality/

Rev. Nelson then speaks about using dreams as part of other spiritual practices including labyrinth walking and personal prayer. He shares that dreamwork has been the most powerful spiritual practice that he has experienced and speaks about some of his personal practices around dreams and spirituality.

We speak with two callers. First Chris from Felton shares some dreams she has been having about being a recent empty nester. We also take a call from Ahleen from Santa Cruz who laments that most of her dreams are about everyday problems, and she wishes she could have more comforting or uplifting dreams.

BIO. Rev. Geoff Nelson, D. Min., is a retired Presbyterian pastor, from Whittier, California. He is also a trained spiritual director, labyrinth facilitator and received his D. Min. degree for running dream groups in churches which his book, “Dreaming in Church” describes. Rev. Nelson is part of the IASD (International Association for the Study of Dreams) serving on the ethics committee and the conference planning committee. He has been involved in hosting several regional southern California dream conferences with IASD. Geoff is excited about the upcoming ISD conference in Tucson next summer, which will be the first live conference in three years.
