Can dream interpretation be manipulative? You bet! Our guest Gerette Buglion, of Living Cult Free, shares her experiences with 18 years in a dream cult. Gerette is passionate about reclaiming her own life and helping others to reclaim theirs.
I start by reading a short passage from my book in progress about the vulnerability of dreamers when they ask for support around their dreams. Gerette tells two of her dreams and how they were interpreted by her ex-teacher in a way that belittled her tender nature. She goes on to tell a new dream in which someone negates her own vivid experience of seeing a white bear.
After the break, we talk about gaslighting and how it can be healthy for people in relationship to have different perceptions. We end with Gerette talking about the clarifying nature that writing about a lived experience brings and describing the ongoing and drop-in writing groups that she offers, plus the upcoming online panel with guests Sarah Edmonson, Daniel Shaw and others
Gerette is author of two books “An Everyday Cult” and “Writing to Reckon Journal.”
BIO: Gerette Buglion wants to live in a world where cult leaders, narcissistic abusers, and manipulative marketing techniques are spotted, called out, and silenced, creating more opportunities for nourishing relationships to flourish. Her work as educator centers on liberation from coercive control and supporting the integrative power of writing for survivors of cultic relationships through Writing to Reckon™ programs.

Could doing yoga while on psychedelics improve insight? What about yoga while lucid dreaming? Our guest, Henry Kandel, teaches what he calls “Ketamine-State Yoga” which he says improves healing outcomes, stokes creative flow, and cultivates spiritual experience. While ingesting an unintentionally large amount of ketamine while meditating, our guest discovered the value of doing spiritual practices while using psychedelics, and now he teaches it to others. When it comes to breaking patterns of depression or addiction, Henry says that the key to getting a healing effect is to have a spiritual or mystical experience whether meditating, having a lucid dream, or using psychedelics. He then touches into microdosing and how it can enhance noticing the dream-like nature of things.
After the break we take two calls, the first is from Henry’s daughter Alice in Brooklyn who describes starting a lucid dreaming practice at age eight to help her deal with her troubling sleep paralysis. The second caller is Ellen from Soquel who shares some of her experiences of using Tibetan Dream Yoga practices to enhance lucid dreaming. At the end of the show, Henry speculates why mystical experiences are emotionally healing.
BIO: Henry Kandel is a science teacher and yogi living in Brooklyn. He has studied diverse forms of yoga for over 30 years including Tibetan Dream and Sleep Yoga from Tenzin Wangyal and Chongtul Rinpoche. He originated Ketamine-State Yoga and has taught it to yogis, therapists, and hundreds of folks online.

When should you do the opposite of what you usually do? Today we share a popular replay about lucid dreaming, shadow work, and dream yoga with Chris Cunniffe. Chris had been a lawyer for 8 years when he had a dream which nudged him onto a more spiritual path. In the dream, Chris was at a Milli Vanilli conference which led him to wonder about what part of his life was a false front.
Chris urges us to consider “doing the opposite”. For example: dreaming is meaningless; consider that it might be meaningful. Nightmares are bad and should be avoided; perhaps they are helpful. I should run away from that monster in my dream; maybe I should turn towards it. Chris gives examples of using this idea with shadow dream figures.
We then speak about treating waking life as a lucid dream including connecting with those cartoon-like figures we encounter over and over. I got some personal ahas from this discussion about my own trouble delegating tasks. We end by talking about the idea that some of the people we meet in our dreams are counterparts or soulmates.
BIO: Chris is a graduate of Holy Cross College (1993) and Harvard Law School (1996). He has a career background as an entrepreneur in both law and real estate. In 2015, Chris founded Lucid Coaching, LLC, as a creative vehicle for offering coaching services to clients and for publishing articles and videos about dreams, personal development, and spirituality. Chris currently serves as a board member and volunteer facilitator at Bliss Spiritual Co-op, a Charleston based retreat center, where he facilitates discussion groups about dreams and other topics.

Professor Bargdill argues that every time we dream, our soul gets schooled! He says dreams prepare us for the future and reflect back to us our past, giving us a chance to make different choices in the future. We talk about what he calls dream inversions in which dreams turn the tables on us and let us know what others feel about how we behave with them. Also he argues that positive dreams are not wish fulfillment but are encouragements for us to keep going. He describes what he calls nightmirths, which are pleasant dreams that we wake up from smiling.
After the break, we take a call from Kai from Miami who shares a dream about seeing her name on a tombstone that helped her understand that she had made the right choice about attending graduate school. We then talk about death dreams and sex dreams, and Richard ends by suggesting that dreams are helping us prepare big changes in the human race.
BIO: Richard Bargdill is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Bargdill is the author of six books, including the newly published: A Dreamer’s Thought Book: Intriguing Ideas about the Dreaming Process. His professional publications cover topics such as boredom, depression, meaning making and dreaming.

Our guest has hosted hundreds of patients on ketamine-assisted psychedelic trips and has gone on a few of his own, yet his experience is that dreamwork can be even more profound. Dr. Darren Jakubec is an emergency-room anesthetist and runs a pain clinic in northern British Columbia.
Jake talks about his history with dreaming and inner work and then gives an example of working a dream with a pain clinic patient. He describes his experience with a ketamine clinic which he ran for several years, describing psychedelics as an inner work accelerant which uses much of the same language as dreaming.
After the break we take a dream share from Steve Popp, co-host of the “In the Garden” program which precedes the Dream Journal on Saturday mornings on KSQD. The dream features powerful spiritual themes which leads us into Jake giving his analogy about psychedelics vs dreaming which he summarizes as fire hose vs garden hose. We take a second dream from Elizabeth from Bellingham WA of a chaotic car trip with a problematic loved one.
Books mentioned during the show: The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan, and various work by Gabor Mate. He also mentions the Curable app for dealing with chronic pain.
BIO: Darren Jakubec, M.D., is trained in family medicine and in anesthesia and lives and practices in northern British Columbia. Darren has been a dreamworker for 12 years and practices dreamwork in his pain clinic, in his ketamine clinic, in the emergency room, and in the hallways and rooms of the hospital where he works.
