After a century in which Irish politics had been controlled by two centre-right parties, this February's Irish general election saw a win of Sinn Féin – a left-wing party with connections to the Irish Republican Army, which was an anti-British paramilitary organisation that fought in the so-called Troubles. In part one of this episode of eurobabble, student of politics Jovana Rudic explains the sudden rise of Sinn Féin and adds insights on Irish economy. In part two, Jovana tells us how the Irish relate to Northern Ireland, what the matter with Americans celebrating St. Patrick's Day more than the Irish is, why Cromwell's England brought Irishmen to Jamaica, and whether or not she speaks the country's Celtic language.

Thirty years ago, the wall dividing West and East Germany fell and the two nations were set to become one once again. These days though, the divisions between east and west seem bigger than ever. The former Iron Curtain is crisscrossed by insults like racists and xenophobes from one side, and condescension and exploitation from the other. Can it really be possible that it only took forty years for one people to split into two completely different parts? And what does it mean to be East German in Two Thousand Nineteen? Follow today’s eurobabble to find out.
Two years after a referendum that should have led to Catalonian independence, the region not only remains part of Spain, but due to the referendum being illegal under Spanish constitution, the leaders of the independence movement were jailed for up to 13 years last month. Violence in the streets ensued after the verdict was published. Bernat Pous, Catalonian student and volunteer for one of the pro-independence organisations, offers us a look on the pro-independence arguments, explains what life was like in Catalonia under the regime of the fascist dictator Franco, or how sleeping in a school helps a state hold an election.
The actions of the Turkish army have come under worldwide scrutiny in the past weeks, when it announced an invasion into Northern Syria with a stated goal of creating a 'safe zone' for Syrian refugees there. There’s just one small problem: the area is largely inhabited by Kurds: a stateless nation who was a key NATO ally in defeating the so-called Islamic State, but also one with a strained relationship with the Turkish government. With Umut Uygur, we talk about President Erdoğan, Umut's experiences from living in a town near the Syrian border, local rap songs criticising social problems, and kebab being a very fancy meal in Turkey.
Sebastian Kurz became the world's youngest political leader when he became the Chancellor of Austria in 2017, but two years later, his government fell after the so-called Ibiza affair. In the following snap election, however, he actually gained more votes instead of losing. Viennese law student Sophia Weiser tells us not only about what is it that Austrians like about Kurz, but also about Empress Sissi, the peculiar way the Austrian public TV honoured Karel Gott, and why having culturally educated members of government is a sure plus.
