  • The Ultrarunning Prodigy | Running Tales

Addison Hendricks is something of an ultra-marathoning prodigy.

Back in high school, the now 26-year-old was encouraged by his coach to take part in a 48-hour track race. But participating in the event wasn't enough for him. After looking it up, Addison decided the under-21 American record of 130-miles was breakable. He was just 16 when he took on the Wildcat 100 Ultra Race in his hometown of Pensacola, Florida. That didn't stop him bettering the record within 37 hours and 37 minutes. The result might sound incredible, but people shouldn't have been shocked. A cross-country and track runner, Addison was completing 50k and 50-mile training runs every weekend.

These days, Addison regularly takes on - and podiums - in races ranging from 50k to over 200-miles. In recent months he has completed races including The Barkley Fall Classic and the Cowboy 200, while back in June he won the 351-mile Last Annual Heart of the South (HOTS) Road Race. The latter event is an incredible adventure race that sees competitors arrive for their run atop Sand Mountain in North Georgia with no idea where the route will take them, other than that it will cover between 300 and 350 miles.

Next year looks set to be another epic, with events already planned, including the 230-mile Coast to Coaster - another race Addison has previously won - and returns to both HOTS and the Cowboy 200.

We’ll be talking to Addison on the latest episode of Running Tales, part of Step Forward with Lewis and the Everyday Athlete Podcast Network.

  • Breaking the Silence: Evan Birch on Men’s Mental Health and Healing through Running | Enduring Minds

In the powerful debut episode of Run Tri Bike’s Enduring Minds podcast, Run Tri Bike owners Jason Bahamundi and Aum Gandhi sit down with co-host Evan Birch to dive into a raw and necessary conversation about men’s mental health. This episode, Breaking the Silence, goes beyond the typical talk, embracing vulnerability and authenticity as the three men openly discuss their own struggles with mental health, challenging the stigma that often silences men in their darkest times.
Jason and Aum introduce the purpose behind Enduring Minds—a space created to explore the silent battles many men face. The discussion starts with Evan’s personal journey as an EMS dispatcher, a role marked by high-stress and constant exposure to traumatic events. Evan shares how the relentless pressure impacted his mental health, pushing him to suppress emotions, eventually leading to a point where he recognized the need for help. This vulnerable story resonates with so many, especially those in high-pressure careers, who may find comfort in knowing they’re not alone.
    [11:40 - 22:50]
Evan recounts specific challenges he faced on the job, sharing moments that made him realize just how much emotional weight he was carrying. He discusses the value of having a support system, revealing how crucial it was for him to have people who listened without judgment. Vulnerability wasn’t easy, but for Evan, it was the key to healing and growing stronger.
    [22:50 - 33:22]
The conversation then moves to the tools and coping mechanisms Evan has discovered over time. Humor, he explains, became a coping device, but even more so, running—especially ultrarunning—provided both physical and mental relief. As Evan discusses, running offers a dual experience: a way to escape and a space for self-discovery. Each mile brings peace, and each race finish brings self-reflection. His story will inspire those who find solace in the rhythm of their steps.
    [42:54 - 55:13]
In one of the most reflective parts of the episode, Evan addresses the power of silence and self-reflection. Learning to be comfortable with himself, to process complex emotions without distraction, has been vital. This struggle, he shares, was perhaps one of the hardest but most rewarding parts of his mental health journey.
    [55:13 - 01:05:21]
The episode also touches on the challenges of social media. Evan, Jason, and Aum discuss the need for authenticity in an online world that often invites comparison. Evan’s perspective on staying true to oneself offers valuable insight for anyone feeling the pressures of social media.
    [01:05:23 - 01:14:19]
Looking to the future, Evan, Jason and Aum outline their hopes for the Enduring Minds podcast. Their vision is to create a movement, a community where men feel encouraged to open up and support one another. This episode is just the beginning, with future guests and topics aimed at breaking down barriers and supporting mental health awareness.
This episode will resonate with anyone on a mental health journey, whether struggling to find balance or seeking a new path to healing. Join us as we embark on this vital conversation. Don’t forget to subscribe and share if you or someone you know might benefit from Enduring Minds.

  • Reluctant Runner to Marathoner: Paula Black’s Journey of Loss and Community Support | Running Tales

In this emotional episode of the Running Tales podcast, host Craig Lewis sits down with Paula Black, a remarkable woman who found her way into running during some of life’s most challenging moments. Paula’s story isn’t just about miles and finish lines; it’s about using endurance as a path to healing, growth, and raising awareness for an important cause.
Paula’s Running Start: Paula wasn’t always a runner. Like many, she initially saw running as a distant goal, seemingly out of reach. Her journey began with simple steps—running while her children were at nursery, and her first race, a 5K Race for Life in 2010. Each mile paved the way for the next, transforming her from a reluctant runner to a passionate marathoner.
Achieving the Marathon Dream: With determination, Paula set her sights on the iconic London Marathon. Training rigorously, she ran 35 miles a week, aiming to complete the marathon in under 5 hours. After months of preparation, she crossed the finish line at 4:59:58, an achievement that held deep, personal significance. The journey became not just a testament to her physical endurance but an emotional milestone, leading to tears of pride and accomplishment.
David’s Diagnosis and Advocacy: Paula’s husband, David, a dedicated runner himself, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a devastating illness that progressively impacts muscle control. Despite the bleak prognosis, David and Paula became advocates for MND awareness, determined to make an impact. Paula’s commitment to running became intertwined with her mission to honor David’s memory and support others facing the same battle.
Understanding MND: Paula provides insight into MND, a disease that gradually disconnects the brain from the muscles, causing the body to lose function while the mind remains intact. While there is no cure, certain treatments can help slow the disease’s progression. Paula’s advocacy helps spread awareness and provides a beacon of hope to those affected.
Pushing Limits with Ultra Challenges: With the mental and physical strength she gained through marathon training, Paula went on to conquer ultra-marathons and 100km challenges, including the Cotswold Way and the London to Brighton routes. These feats showcase her grit and determination, proving that anything is possible with the right mindset. Paula emphasizes the importance of mental strength in endurance sports, using a strategy of fast walking and intermittent running to complete these challenges.
The Power of Community and Parkrun: For Paula, running is more than a solo endeavor—it’s a way to connect with others. She highlights the value of Parkrun as a supportive community event where everyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes, can feel welcome. Through running, Paula has built lifelong friendships, found mental resilience, and created a support system that has carried her through difficult times.
Join the Journey: Paula’s story reminds us that running is more than just a physical act—it’s a powerful tool for connection, healing, and growth. If you’re inspired by her story, consider joining a Parkrun, getting involved in your local running community, or learning more about the MND Association. Let Paula’s journey motivate you to take that first step, whether you’re new to running or preparing for your next big event.

Josh’s commitment to breaking down barriers extends to advocating for a non-binary elite division in the Philadelphia Marathon, reflecting a broader movement toward equity.
