  • What People with Serious Illness Want - Part 1

    Send us Fan Mail

This is the first of a two-part series discussing the research regarding what people with serious illness want, particularly at the end of their lives.

    This episode discusses:

    • Wanting to live without pain
    • Wanting to make decisions about our care

Goals of care are very individualized, and treatment should encompass psycho-social, physical and spiritual needs or desires.  We talk about how it is important for everyone involved to communicate - from the nurse and provider to the patient and the patient's family.

  • Traumatic Grief

    Send us Fan Mail

In our last episode we talked about grief and mourning. This week we expand on the concept to discuss traumatic or complicated grief. Traumatic grief is grief and mourning over a death that came about in traumatic circumstances (e.g. sudden, suicide, murder).

COVID-19 affected many in this way because loved ones often died suddenly and alone. This can leave family members with regret and emotional pain from "not being there" at their last moments.

We talk about how to identify complicated grief, and ways to help yourself cope with this type of death.

  • Grief

    Send us Fan Mail

Is there a difference between grief and mourning?  Will I ever get over the death of a loved one?  In this podcast we talk about grief (the process of experiencing a loss) and mourning (the coping efforts related to the loss).  We also talk about how to help yourself through the process of mourning.

We have a special guest and new member to our Everyone Dies Team - Nancy Miller. Nancy is well acquainted with grief as she tells her story in our podcast. But she has grown tremendously through it and now uses her experience to help others. We are always in awe when we listen to her powerful story.

  • Advance Directives

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode we delve deep into Advance Directives.  We often have misconceptions that advance directives are only for older people or people that are dying.  But did you know the whole reason they exist is because of two young adults that had terrible accidents, leaving friends and family members to fight for what they knew they would want?  These documents are valid for anyone 18 or older who want to take control of their own bodies.

Marianne talks about advance directives, and Charlie discusses more some of his personal experience in the field.  We also have a special guest - Abbie - who tells us about how an advance directive saved their family from very difficult choices.  Please also visit our website for some resources and video of a fun Dr. Seuss-style poem about the importance of Advance Directives.

No one likes to receive bad news such as a cancer or debilitating disease diagnosis, but it is helpful to be prepared for it.  This podcast explores how health care practitioners are taught to give bad news and what you, as a consumer, can do to help yourself when receiving (or being with a family member who is receiving) a difficult diagnosis.  We also have a special guest for our segment Momento Mori.
