Anthony Sowell, also known as the Cleveland Strangler, was a serial killer responsible for the murders of eleven Black women between 2007 and 2009. His victims were primarily found on his property, where they had been raped and strangled. Many of the women struggled with substance abuse, and a failure to prioritize their cases contributed to the delayed resolution. Sowell was convicted in 2011 and sentenced to death, dying of an unspecified terminal illness in 2021 while on death row. The case highlights systemic issues regarding the investigation of violence against marginalized communities.
