In the 1700’s it was very easy to socially scam your way into a living. Certain local parish schemes set up to supposedly mutually benefit those in need and those who could offer an apprenticeship, could easily be abused. For one household, they fully gamed the system and came up trumps being paid for three apprentices from three different parishes, all of whom didn’t know about each other.

The girls were exploited, used for free labour and treated so badly that one of them would end up in an early grave.
