Our focus in today’s conversation is to understand how the way we interact with our child or children - right from the day they are born - dramatically impacts the way they learn to interact in their adult relationships. Now all of us as parents have the best of intentions for our children, but the impact on them may be very different.

So, let’s take a few minutes to do a quick self-check… and no matter what we’ve done so far, we can make changes to become much more effective parents. And, I build this conversation based on the experiences I’ve had growing up and realizing how it’s impacted me in my adult life, research from psychology, my journey as a client with my own counselor, and my work as a coach and counselor working with parents.

As parents, this is a must listen for us!!

We all say that coaching works! Especially if one is a coach! AND, if you’ve experienced the power of coaching as a client, you know it works!! 

However, few of us are able to explain from a conceptual or theoretical perspective, what happens in the process and why it works.

So, whether you’re a leadership coach working with a client or a leader using a coaching conversation with a direct report, here is a useful framework from Attachment Theory for us to understand what is going on.

And, with this understanding, we can deepen the impact of the process for our clients or direct reports.  So, that’s the objective of our conversation in this episode.

Like the corona virus, negativity is highly contagious. There is so much hype on social media on being positive and staying positive ….and the power of the positive seems to have an overriding effect on all the negative stuff that happens.

The message of these feel good gurus on social media is that irrespective of the shit that is hitting the roof, you can make it all go away if you’re positive.

Well that may get clicks on social media, but that is NOT what real life experience says, and certainly not what research from social psychology points to. And, in my practice as an executive coach, I find that many of my clients struggle with figuring out what to do and how to manage team members or colleagues who are toxic.

So, in our conversation today, let’s talk openly about the power of the bad or the negative and the tremendous impact it has on how we operate and on our environment.

Sometimes our personal relationships go through difficult times that just seem to continue; or our differences seem irreconcilable. Many HR leaders do pretty well in their careers to reach up to senior leadership…GM or Dir or even VP level. But then, from there on they struggle to move up to the C-Suite or get a seat on the Board. Something changes at the edge of the C-Suite, and often HR is not able to make it!!  

In our conversation today, Adil Malia, Chief Executive of The Firm, and ex-Group President HR of the Essar group, explains what happens at the Board, how it is different from the senior HR role under the CEO, and therefore, what the HR leader needs to do to get a seat at the Board!!
