In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, I go SOLO for the fourth time in this podcast journey. I am retiring as a teacher from St. Michael's Episcopal Day School in Carmichael. It has been my home away from home for the past 26 years (half of my life). Today I reflect on my incredible years as a teacher! What a true gift to have been in this profession!
And while this episode will resonate more with St. Michael's families, past and present, I believe it will also resonate with you the listener. Retirement is a funny thing. When I asked my 4th Graders to define retirement earlier this week, my favorite answer was "it's when you get old and can't do stuff anymore." Haha 😂. Not me, but I appreciate the answer through the eyes of a child. Another person said to me, "so that means you only have 34 jobs now." So good!
I never intended to be a teacher. This guy had his sites set on being a play-by-play announcer for the NBA's Sacramento Kings. Instead, GOD directed me on a path that has been so incredibly rewarding on many levels. It takes me back to what this podcast is all about. THE JOURNEY. We each have one. We each have a story to tell. And through those stories, we can connect with others around this.
I am so thankful to St. Michael's. Closing the chapter on one book and getting ready to open another. Yes! I will get to embrace my life as an entrepreneur. But, this seed was planted by the most important thing surrounding this decision ... spending more time with my wife of 28 years Kristin. We are really excited about that! And I do have my eyes on improving my GOLF ⛳️ game.
Enjoy today's Talking Story 🏝
It's a SPECIAL one!

DJ Derik Eisenreich is an award-winning Wedding DJ who has been at it for 35 years. He has done it all including starring as a Club DJ at some of the local hot spots in Sacramento (Do you remember America Live, El Dorado Saloon, InCahoots, or Stoney Inn). Derik's key to success is his amazing talent as a DJ, but moreover his care for his couples. According to Eisenreich, he remains friends with 30 percent of his couples!
In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard talks shop with Derik"The thing I love about Derik is just how kind he is. He is humble and wants to help others. I can see why couples are happy and satisfied when they hire him as their DJ." Our conversation hits THREE areas:
Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS ...
▪️1. Listening to Derik talk about places like America Live and El Dorado Saloon. I didn't frequent these establishments, but certainly remember them very well from my days growing up in Sacramento.
▪️2. Derik's experience with Jason Aldean. It's like having a Shohei Ohtani rookie card. Derik was the first to bring country superstar Aldean to Sacramento back in the early 2000's. That's pretty cool!
▪️3. Hands down ... Derik is just a GREAT guy! Someone you are happy to be friends with. You can tell he is in a good place in his life at 51, engaged to get married, and continuing to rock weddings in the greater Northern California region.
Our Connection | Derik and I met each other at an event for Angels for Hearts a few years ago at Jesuit High School. We struck up a conversation and from there our friendship began. Derik is a friend and mentor of mine. Derik is part of my partnership with some amazing local wedding DJ's (including last week's guest Joe Kalamaras (#42) and Mike Regan).

Gary Gerould is as good as they come. The 80-year old has been the radio voice of the Sacramento Kings since their arrival in 1985. That's 36 years of the G-Man's Golden Tones in the Capital City. And when you talk to him, the enthusiasm still remains and he has no thoughts of slowing down. And here I am with the privilege and honor to talk Kings Basketball with the radio legend. Trust me ... I soaked it ALL IN!
In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard dives into the great stories of the Sacramento Kings with the G-Man"Gary was a bucket list guest for me. I love the NBA. I love the Kings. And no better person to talk about our team than the radio legend. I enjoyed every second." Our conversation hits THREE areas:
Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS ...
▪️1. Hands down. Segment Two. Just talking about the glory years of the Sacramento Kings with Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, Jason Williams, Mike Bibby, Doug Christie, Bobby Jackson, Peja Stojakovic, and Rick Adelman 👑💜. One word = PRICELESS!
▪️2. Best description of the conversation was Gerould describing the current 15-year playoff drought. "We are wandering in the desert. I am thirsty 💦!"
▪️3. When I said good-bye to Gary, I had this overwhelming feeling of gratefulness that I had the honor of speaking to one of Sacramento's treasures. So good! 😉
Our Connection | I had the opportunity to work for the Sacramento Kings from 1995-2004. There I met Gary. I had a first-hand look at watching him work as a member of the Kings Broadcast Team. I was an aspiring play-by-play announcer and was always picking Gary's brain for advice. He was always very gracious and helpful.

Joe Kalamaras is the essence of what a Wedding DJ should be! He brings 38 years of experience that started at the age of 19. Fast forward to today, the creative behind SJ's Disc Jockey in Sacramento is the host of hosts that creates personal experiences for his couples. In fact, if I could do my wedding over again, there is no doubt that I would want Joe to be our DJ. He is truly top shelf and it's because of his care for his couples and his craft that sets him apart and should be a blueprint for all DJ's going into the industry.
In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard learns from the Yoda of Wedding DJ's"I have been a DJ for close to 20 years and yet had a list of incredible takeaways from Joe. He thinks outside the box that creates a brand that is like no other. I am proud to call him a mentor and friend" Our conversation hits THREE areas:
Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS ...
▪️1. The NAPKIN WAVING and MIC DROP stories showcased for me why Joe is the best in the business when it comes to being a Wedding DJ. Fun stories.
▪️2. Joe's ability to gain the trust and confidence of the couple and their guests. There is a lot of work that goes into Joe's ability to craft his words that truly show guests that they are part of the whole experience. It was cool to hear him describe how that all happens.
▪️3. I couldn't stop thinking about future couples looking for their Wedding DJ. Joe reminded me of how important the DJ + Host is for your special day.
Our Connection | Joe and I met a few years ago. Had coffee at Pause Coffee in Orangevale to talk DJ shop. That one conversation led to an instant friendship. Joe has been instrumental in helping me elevate my wedding bookings in 2021 + 2022.

Matt Walbeck of Walbeck Baseball Academy had a dream of being a Major League Baseball player ... at FIVE years old! That dream became reality in 1987 when the City's Player of the Year from Sac High was drafted as a catcher by the Chicago Cubs in the 8th Round of the MLB draft. In 1993, he made his debut in Wrigley Field. That magical moment led to an 11-year career spanning five different teams. He wasn't done there. He was also a successful manager in the Minor Leagues. When it was time to head to the next chapter in his life, Walbeck's vision was clear. Teach the game to others through instruction. In 2011, Walbeck Baseball Academy was born.
In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard talks baseball and takes a walk down memory lane with Walbeck"Matt is a true baseball guy. I was in awe of the stories and his recollection of specific moments where he could recall dates, times, and the players involved. Truly one of the reasons why I love baseball so much." Our conversation hits THREE areas:
Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS ...
▪️1. The baseball stories. They never get old. Matt was throwing names out like Chan Ho-Park, Tim Belcher, Kenny Rogers, Scott Erickson, amongst others. I literally could talk hours about baseball.
▪️2. Matt's description of what set Walbeck Baseball Academy apart from other baseball programs. Teaching life skills as they relate to baseball. Beyond that, he and his staff was teaching kids about the respect for the game of baseball.
▪️3. Matt discussing the relationship with umpires. I found that fascinating.
Our Connection | Matt and I both graduated in 1987. While I was at Christian Brothers, Walbeck had common baseball friends from CB. I was well aware of his talents in high school. It was fun to follow his baseball journey.

YOU GOT THIS! Words spoken by Sami Kader through his platform Sami's Circuit. The positive messaging delivered by the Roseville Native has been heard by tens of thousands of kids in over a 100 schools in the greater Sacramento area. When the Covid Pandemic hit last March, all that Sami had was gone. Pivot. In addition, Sami and his wife Megan (of 9 years) had lost their child. While the moment was heavy, the message was simple. YOU GOT THIS! NEVER GIVE UP! Messages that Sami said thousands of times were now being directed his way. This is only a sliver of what is a very powerful message that comes your way today.
In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard spends time with the creator of Sami's Circuit."Sami is the man. There is a reason that schools across California are instituting Sami's Circuit into their curriculum. It truly represents everything a kid needs when it comes to self-worth, kindness, movement, and exercise. It's the GREAT combination!" Our conversation hits THREE areas:
Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS ...
▪️1. Sami's honesty and transparency, especially when talking about the loss of a child coupled with completely losing his business.
▪️2. The Pivot was BIG for Sami and totally transformed Sami's Circuit from being an in-person experience (which totally won't go away) to an On Demand experience that is available worldwide.
▪️3. Back to honesty and transparency. Sami has shown how to take one's story and make it into something powerful and helpful for others. It truly shows that our pain can become our strength as long as we allow it.
Our Connection | I was introduced to Sami years ago at a Girls On the Run Event in Sacramento. I had heard about his program. It was great to meet Sami in person. I have been following him ever since.

Nicole McKeever is obsessed with Irish Dancing. She admits it. This obsession has resulted in an amazing journey surrounded by this long-time Irish Tradition. Today, she is the founder and director of McKeever School of Irish Dance located in Downtown Sacramento inside the E. Claire Raley Studios. Remember Riverdance? Nicole was on tour with Riverdance for five years. She's from New Jersey. After graduating from Rutgers, she made her way to the University of Limerick in Ireland to earn her Masters in Irish Dance. All of this coming your way today on ETB.
In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard taps into Nicole's obsession with Irish Dancing."Nicole oozes with passion when it comes to Irish Dancing. She has put in the hours. She has put in the work. And now she is giving it back and honoring her country's proud tradition." Our conversation hits THREE areas:
Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS ...
▪️1. The geographical journey is pretty cool and diverse. Lived in New Jersey. Earned her Masters in Ireland. And ended up in Sacramento.
▪️2. Her tales about her Riverdance experience were a fun listen.
▪️3. The passion that Nicole exudes when it comes to Irish Dancing. I know we mention the word 'obsession,' but truly this is about a young entrepreneur who is honoring her country and sees the importance of traditions being passed along through generations.
Our Connection | Nicole was introduced to me by friend Erin Weeden. It was pretty simple. Erin said, "You have to have Nicole on your podcast. She is amazing!" That was enough for me.

Marie Copher is a Life Coach! With a 20-year background as a therapist, counselor, and social worker, this was the perfect NEXT STEP. And why not start this new adventure during the pandemic. Even better. Thus ... Vitalis Coaching + Wellness was born. In fact, when she launched in January of this year (2021), her first client was a therapist. Today will be educational, inspiring, and most of all ... FUN!
In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard feeds off the positive energy of Marie."I learned so much in today's episode about what a Life Coach is and what it isn't. And what made it fun was Marie's positive energy. You sense it right away!" Our conversation hits THREE areas:
Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS ...
▪️1. Hands down being educated by Marie on the difference between a life coach and a therapist.
▪️2. Loved how Marie described the transition into her new business. "I was missing the ability to think creatively." "I so badly wanted to color outside the lines and now I am ready to color everywhere."
▪️3. The pure excitement Marie showcases when she talks about her new adventure. It should represent hope for all entrepreneurs.
Our Connection | Marie was introduced to me through an Instagram Message from her sister Veronica Bartell. I am very instinctive and said 'let's make it happen.' So glad we did!

Anthony + Diana O'Neal are the first couple to be on Experience the Buzz. So glad it was them. The O'Neal Dynamic duo both had jobs with the State of California (Diana still works for the state), but a torn Achilles changed everything. As of today, AO and Diana are life insurance agents with Primerica Insurance. Yes, we talk about life insurance. A big part of today's Talking Story is also about a Love Story and a great look at a young couple doing life together.
In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard enjoys his interview with ETB's first couple."I love the dynamic between AO and Diana. You can tell that this is what a marriage is all about. The fact that they work together, share the same office, and enjoy being together tells me everything I need to know." Our conversation hits THREE areas:
Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS ...
▪️1. What shines the brightest is the love and respect AO and Diana have for each other. It was easy to see and capture in the interview. Really made me happy.
▪️2. Some serious LIFE INSURANCE knowledge was dropped in today's episode. I enjoy being educated on topics such as this one. Gives you perspective.
▪️3. The lessons that both AO and Diana learned throughout their marriage, their jobs, and now their new adventure at Primerica. It should provide hope for us and reinforce that we all are on a JOURNEY!
Our Connection | I met Anthony (AO) a few years ago through a Bible Study. The Bible Study was made up of the two of us, my son Max, and good friend Parker Abercrombie. Getting into God's Word and going deep and being vulnerable was priceless.

Brianna James has amazing talent to match her amazing personality. She is a dancer. She is a choreographer. She is a Sacramento native. But most importantly, she has a story to tell. See, Brianna was sexually abused as a child. For years, the abuse was a secret. But Brianna found that the journey of being crippled with something out of her control was met with key people put in her life who let Brianna know how special she was. And today she is the creative force behind a 20-minute documentary called, "Here Lies the Truth." Let's just say ... she is just getting started.
In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard enjoys everything James brings to the table."Hands down ... Brianna James is amazing. I am so grateful that I was introduced to her and had the opportunity to have this conversation with such an incredible person." Our conversation hits THREE areas:
Our Connection | When we met on Zoom for our interview, that was our first in-person meeting. Brianna was introduced to me by Erica Bliss Pattni of Rowdy and a guest on ETB (Episode 27). Such a great suggestion that turned into a great episode. Thank you Erica!
