  • NO. 63 -- KAYTE CHRISTENSEN-HUNTER | Sacramento Kings TV Analyst

    Send us Fan Mail

KAYTE CHRISTENSEN-HUNTER is part of history when it comes to women broadcasting in the NBA. As an NBA fan I think of Doris Burke who in 2017, was ESPN's first woman appointed to become a full-time NBA game analyst. Kayte has quietly done every role thinkable in her 15 years with the Sacramento Kings. And now she has her dream job as the team's TV color analyst.

In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard sits back and enjoys the knowledge and stories of Kayte. "I speak for a lot of people when I say that Kayte is so deserving of this position. And today when you hear her speak about her journey and share some great stories , I am confident that you will be glad that Kayte is here in Sacramento."  Our conversation hits FOUR areas:

    • The 1st Quarter 🏀  dives into the broadcasting journey of Kayte. She talks about the importance of Craig Amazeen, who was responsible for hiring Christensen-Hunter. We get the inside track to the timeline that made Christensen-Hunter the TV Analyst of the Sacramento Kings. We find out about Doug Christie and his desire to coach coupled with the love that former Kings have with the city of Sacramento. We finish out the segment talking about Golden One Center in comparison with Arco Arena (Sleep Train Arena or Power Balance Pavilion also accepted).
    • 2nd Quarter 🏀 dives into a series of subjects. Fans in the stands at Golden One Center. The positives and negatives of not having to go on the road. Broadcasting a game-winning shot from Harrison Barnes. Takeaways from Kayte's other roles in TV and radio. We then transition to where it all started ... an AAU team coached by her school's math teacher Mike Martin. That led to a scholarship at UC Santa Barbara and in 2002, Kayte was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA.
    • The 3rd Quarter 🏀 begins with Kayte discussing the end of her WNBA career.  She shares what she learned from her six-year career and how that helped her in the next phase in life. Kayte discusses broadcasting as a woman and then offers her thoughts about key people in her broadcasting career, including Jim Kozimor, Carmichael Dave, and Doris Burke.
    • The 4th Quarter 🏀 is dedicated to this year's version of the Sacramento Kings. We talk about it all. Luke Walton. The Ben Simmons Pre-Season Saga. Harrison Barnes. Davion Mitchell.

Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS  ...
    1. Mike Martin - Kayte talks about her school's math teacher, who became her AAU basketball coach. This one person helped ignite the fire that allowed Kayte to pursue a career in basketball as well as become the first college graduate in her family.
    2. When talking about her journey. "My life is a series of things that happened to me and led me in a direction and I just jumped at them."
    3. About her playing days being shortened by injury, "I really don't miss playing basketball. I miss being on a team.

Our Connection |  This was our first meeting. I was really excited to talk Kings basketball with Kayte!

  • NO. 62 -- LEO BEAS | Cowbell Kingdom

    Send us Fan Mail

LEO BEAS is the content creator and force behind COWBELL KINGDOM. This multi-media enterprise is a great resource for inside information on the NBA's Sacramento Kings as well as other sports.  COWBELL KINGDOM has a strong following on Instagram and Twitter. It features a podcast as well as a You Tube Channel. He is my Kings resource and should be yours, too.

In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard gets excited about talking basketball with Beas. "Leo is super impressive. My buzzword for Leo is 'immersion.' He is immersed and because of that he is well respected by players, coaches, and other members of the media. Leo is a student of the game." Our conversation hits FOUR areas:

    • The 1st Quarter 🏀highlights Leo's beginnings in Cowbell Kingdom in 2015.  Beas drops a big announcement regarding Amazon Prime (thank you for sharing that on ETB 🐝).  We learn about Beas's youth sports journey that led into what he says is his ultimate goal. And we dip into Sacramento Kings talk which is featured as a whole in the 2nd Quarter.
    • 2nd Quarter 🏀action is dedicated completely to the Sacramento Kings. We cover a lot. Leo gives his take on the Ben Simmons preseason saga as well as an interesting take on Buddy Hield.
    • The 3rd Quarter 🏀opens with the process of growing the Cowbell Kingdom franchise. The conversation swings over into takeaways from network marketing (Buzzard) and a family car dealership (Beas). More Kings talk takes place as we focus in on Kings Head Coach Luke Walton. Swing it back to more talk about Bagley and Simmons. And throw in a potpourri of NBA talk.
    • The 4th Quarter 🏀 concentrates on social media, the importance of spirituality, a final take on the Sacramento Kings, and what Leo's schedule looks like on game day.

Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS  ...
    1. Solid takes on Marvin Bagley ("he is not a Top 8 player on the Kings roster"), Buddy Hield ("he is a super role player worth $18 million a year"), and Ben Simmons ("Talent trumps everything.")
    2. I love that his goal is to coach basketball. Everything he has done is part of his amazing journey. Is he the next Erik Spoelstra?
    3. The guy knows his stuff when it comes to the NBA and the Sacramento Kings. Impressive!

Our Connection |  This was my first time meeting Leo. But after this meeting, I know that we will stay connected. Beas is an amazing young man that has BIG things ahead of him. I love meeting young people who are great representatives for the next generation.

  • NO. 61 -- CLARK WRIGHT + MICHELE FUHRMAN | Suncrest Hospice

    Send us Fan Mail

HOSPICE is usually viewed as a scary word. The truth is that many of us don't know what hospice entails for families and those receiving the care. I can tell you first hand, it made a difference in my mom's life. Having battled cancer for over 30 years, hospice created a peaceful and comfortable environment that allowed me to spend the final days with my mom. It made ALL the difference. Today, I have brought on the experts to help debunk the myths. Clark Wright and Michele Fuhrman of Suncrest Hospice join me on Experience the Buzz.

In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard sits back and gets educated on the world of hospice. "i am so grateful to Clark and Michele for their insight into the power and advantage of hospice in regards to our loved ones." Our conversation hits THREE areas:

    • SEGMENT ONE  breaks down the definition and meaning of hospice in general. We find out who is eligible and who pays for hospice. This segments also highlights the advantage of Suncrest Hospice, the biggest being the team aspect and the ability to have their caretakers see patients up to five days a week.
    • SEGMENT TWO  gives us the background on our two guests. Clark came from the education world while Michele came from being in floral design and mobile bidding. Find out how to become a volunteer. Clark discusses building his Suncrest team. And Michele fills us in on some other great facts surrounding hospice care.
    • SEGMENT THREE  is devoted to amazing stories of greatness surrounding the caretakers of Suncrest Hospice.  We found out more about the founders of Suncrest as well as how to inquire about hospice for a loved one. We finish out with Rapid Fire 💥.

Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS  ...
    1. Important to know the definition of HOSPICE. Here it is. Hospice is a type of medical care that gives seriously ill patients and their loved ones meaningful time together when the focus of care turns from active treatment to comfort and quality of life near the end of life. Hospice is not a place. Rather, it is a full range of services that put patients and families in control, giving them hope about their last days, weeks and months together.
    2. It's all about the journey. Interesting in how both Clark and Michele arrived at Suncrest. The common theme? Life skills that can allow you to move from one line of work to another.
    3. "I come alive when I can help a family." - Michele

Our Connection |  Michele and I were friends in high school where I attended Christian Brothers and she attended St. Francis High School.

Beyond that, it is what he is doing with his gift that makes Justin a young man that you want to root for in today's world. I feel confident that you will see what I see after you listen to Justin talk about his love for the guitar, the blues, and his goal of spreading positivity.

In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard dives into Justin's world of playing the guitar. "Justin represents our third young person to make an appearance on ETB (others were Ian McVicar and J.T. Brooksby). I am in awe of young adults like Justin that are simply wise beyond their years. Big things WILL happen for Justin! No doubt in my mind."  Our conversation hits THREE areas:

    • SEGMENT ONE  introduces us to how it all started for Justin when it came to falling in love with the guitar and eventually getting his first one when he was nine years old. Justin shares what drew him to blues music, his AHA moment, his daily routine, and his unique opportunity to play with Ryder Green.
    • SEGMENT TWO  starts with how Justin uses social media to promote his Justin Walter Music brand. The 15-year old discusses spreading positivity, feedback, and his jam session with blues legend Chris Cain. We finish out the segment by discussing what Justin sees for his future.
    • SEGMENT THREE  dives into playing live music. We find out how Justin practices playing the guitar. We finish out with Covid takeaways, Justin's dream line-up, and some fun odds and ends in Rapid Fire 💥.

    1. His start with loving the guitar started with a campfire and ... John Denver.
    2. "I look at the guitar like a video game," -- Justin's approach to playing the guitar.
    3. When I finished this interview I just walked away knowing that Justin Walter has a great future ahead of him. Can't wait to refer back to this podcast and say, "I knew him when he first started."

  • NO. 59 -- PAM WHITEHEAD | Triumph Fitness

    Send us Fan Mail

PAM WHITEHEAD was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2000. Whitehead battled and beat cancer. But what happens after the battle? Pam recognized a need for cancer survivors, especially when it came to physical fitness. During her research, Whitehead became a part of the Livestrong Foundation. In 2004, Pam received a $5000 award for her outreach efforts. She took the money and began Triumph Fitness, which launched for the first time in 2005. And that's just the beginning ...

In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard lets the braintrust behind the Triumph brand do her thing. "Triumph is Pam's baby. You can feel her passion when she tells her story and what is behind things like Triumph Fitness, Triumph Cancer Foundation, Triumph to the Summit, and Triumph 2.0. She has made a major impact for cancer survivors in this area."  Our conversation hits THREE areas:

    • SEGMENT ONE  introduces us to Triumph Cancer Foundation and the idea behind Triumph Fitness. Pam also shares her own personal journey with cancer.
    • SEGMENT TWO  shows us what one does to become part of the Triumph Fitness program. We find out what happened with Triumph when the Covid pandemic hit. Whitehead shares other programs under the Triumph umbrella, including Triumph 2.0 for graduates.
    • SEGMENT THREE  starts with another amazing Triumph program called Triumph to the Summit. Whitehead shares details surrounding the program's annual fund-raising event called Triumph Uncorked. And we finish off how to support Triumph and what that support means.

Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS  ...
    1. Passion. When I first met Pam in 2020, that was the first word that came to my mind. She is one individual who believes strongly in the mission of Triumph. It's impressive to see and has made such a huge difference for so many.
    2. Drive. She heard the words. She battled. And then didn't stop there. Her battle became her war cry to help others. Again, so impressive!
    3. Triumph Fitness seems like a no-brainer for something that should be nationwide. I can guarantee that Pam is thinking the same thing.

Our Connection |  I met Pam in 2020. I was asked to be the auctioneer for Triumph Uncorked. While it was a virtual auction, we had an absolute blast raising money for a great organization.

  • NO. 58 -- KIM GRIFFIN | Author #Curious Connections - Raising Boys to Men

    Send us Fan Mail

KIM GRIFFIN was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2013. Her world changed. One of the results of her diagnosis was to put pen to paper. And last year, she published a book called "#CURIOUS CONNECTIONS - Raising Boys to Men." The book showcases 18 stories involving her two sons, Brien and Matthew. Today's episode definitely centers around the book, but also serves as an education into the world of MS and what Kim's daily life looks like.

In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard enjoys some great stories from Kim. "Kim was an amazing guest. Having gone through experiencing cancer with my mom, I found it important that we get an inside look at how a diagnosis shapes one life. What I gathered was that life doesn't stop and not only does it not stop, it can be a beautiful thing with a different perspective."  Our conversation hits THREE areas:

    • SEGMENT ONE  starts off with proper introductions. We get right into her inspiration behind writing the book and of course ... Kim shares some of the stories. Notably Story No. 1 and No. 9. I will leave it at that. Great way to start off the podcast.
    • SEGMENT TWO  talks about publishing the book and getting into the differences between her boys. We find out what's behind the title of the book. A large part of this segment is dedicated to Kim's world and living with MS (Multiple Sclerosis).
    • SEGMENT THREE  goes back in time and discusses Kim's childhood in Sacramento. After all, she was born and raised in the Capital City. Kim turns the tables and interviews me. She also shares her goals and we finish off with RAPID FIRE 💥!

Here are my favorite HIGHLIGHTS  ...
    1. The purpose behind writing the book. It served as a reminder that as parents, we all have the opportunity to self publish our family memories.
    2. Kim was nervous about being a guest. By podcast end, it was powerful for me to see how well she told her story. It was truly a great conversation.
    3. The education of MS. This interview is part of the process of getting to know people on a deeper level. We understand people better when we know their full story. Power of the podcast.

Our Connection |  I have known Kim and the Griffin family for nearly 20 years. Brien and Matthew were regular attenders of Buzzardball, participating in both the Summer Basketball Camp and Winter Basketball League 🏀.

    • SEGMENT THREE🎨 starts off with Jackie Wada the artist. Wada shares who she looks up to in the art and basketball world.  We touch on the following subjects: Kobe Bryant, the WNBA, Sacramento, being an entrepreneur. We finish off with RAPID FIRE 💥!

▪️2. Her admission of being in a phase of life right now where she is trying to achieve balance in her life regarding her two very different worlds of basketball and art.

  • NO. 56 -- A Tribute to 9/11 🇺🇸 | Leslie Morris, Robert Lambert, + Chris Schenk

    Send us Fan Mail

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2021  marks the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that changed America on September 11th, 2001. We ALL remember where we were. In today's episode, ETB showcases three stories.

    1. LESLIE MORRIS - On the morning of 9/11, Leslie was giving a presentation with 30 colleagues on the 30th floor of the South Tower. It was supposed to be an in-and-out trip.

    2. ROBERT LAMBERT - The harrowing experience of 9/11 took a twist for Robert. Lambert, who was 400 yards away from the Twin Towers when the two planes hit and came down, had just met Raelen a week earlier. The disaster of 9/11 turned into a love story that resulted in the couple getting married and starting a family in Sacramento.

    3. CHRIS SCHENK - The reason for this podcast. Chris called me a week or so ago and asked if I would like to be a part of a community event that would honor 9/11 and in particular Flight 175 (that crashed into the South Tower). The conversation expanded.

    • SEGMENT ONE 🇺🇸 is the story of Leslie Morris.
    • SEGMENT TWO  🇺🇸 is the story of Robert Lambert.
    • SEGMENT THREE 🇺🇸 highlights the 20th Anniversary Memorial Tribute to 9/11 to honor those we lost, Captain Victor Saracini of Flight 175 (local ties to Carmichael), and to celebrate our first responders.

    Here are today's HIGHLIGHTS  ...
▪️1. The stories. This opened my eyes to how many untold stories there are surrounding 9/11. I was happy to be able to share at least two of them.
▪️2. Education. Can't say it enough. Our kids should be educated on this event. It's not pretty, but it's important. It shaped our country.
▪️3. The importance of pausing. Too many of us (including myself) gloss over events like this. We do it with holidays as well. The good news is that we can change that starting today. I know I will.

    Our Connection --

Leslie Morris - Thank you, Susan Swenson. I put out a Facebook Post looking for guests who were in New York City when the Twin Towers were hit. Susan connected us!

Robert Lambert - Thank you, Mike Gutterman. Same thing. Connected us. Robert's two boys, Max and Lucas, both attended St. Michael's Episcopal Day School.

Chris Schenk - We know each other through Buzzardball. His two boys, Kyle and Trey, have participated in my Buzzardball Basketball 🏀 program.

▪️2. Andrea's description behind brining Solomon's to life. You can tell that she clearly thinks outside the box and you know what ... it delivers!
▪️3. I am just proud as a friend to see Andrea doing so well in what is a very hard space to be in when it comes to being a restaurant owner. And believe me ... there is more to come.

Our Connection |  Andrea and I worked together for 10 years when she was on the Media Relations team for the Sacramento Kings and Monarchs.
