  • Rooted and Built Up

The Lord creates in us deep roots and builds in us a strong trunk and thick branches, so that we can weather the storm. And not just in the sense of, “I survived,” but weather it in the way that a live oak does—when the storm has passed, the leaves on the tree remain green.

  • Is it Worth it?

Are we willing to be ridiculed by the world and our family for following Jesus? Will we give up sins—sins that admittedly have pleasure but it is only momentary—to pursue a life that draws us closer to our God? Is following Jesus worth the cost? And Paul is all but shouting at us in Colossians—Yes! Yes it is!

  • Christ is Supreme

We are beginning a new series through the book of Colossians, and as we will see throughout our study, Paul is making the point that Christ is supreme. Paul cannot contain himself. God’s plan in the good news of our salvation is the knowledge that the Colossians need and we need. You were apart from God. An alien and hostile. But Christian, remember this: you are now found holy and blameless in Jesus Christ! That is amazing. Every sin past and every sin future is paid for by Jesus on the cross that God might find you holy and blameless. This is what has changed Paul and will change us!

  • Favored Picturess of a Faithful Teacher

It seems like more than ever we all need people in our lives that model a good teacher doing all that they can to make a dent in helping others see the need for and the greatness of a Savior, found in the person of Jesus.  Let’s look together at the impact John made during those few brief moments when all eyes were on him. In these tumultuous times, when everything seems unsettled, we need John the Baptist more than ever.  Love him or hate him, he was the real deal.  At least he wasn’t a fake.  John gave us several snap shots of what a faithful teacher can look like in a world gone made.  Let’s open his photo album and look at what we can be for others who might be ripe to see and hear.  May all come behind us find us faithful.

  • The Painful Truth About Spiritual Growth

Today, why not come and look at what made John great. John the Baptist was great because he told people what they needed to hear and not what they wanted to hear. As a prophet of God, his words poured out from his inner relationship with God like fire on those who heard. He was the dead opposite of the tickling ear preacher we meet in 2 Timothy 3. That was the greatness of John the Baptist.

We have an excerpt of some of John's preaching, and I think in that comes the transformation for any who want to hear God's message today. He was aggressive in his speaking and unafraid of anyone, that was John the Baptist.

So he was stripped, in one sense of all social graces. And he preached powerfully the word of God. His words came up from within him and poured out on the hearers like fire, and they produced opposite reactions. Either true and genuine repentance, which produce good fruit, or bitter opposition and hatred toward him which ultimately took his life. And John knew it would. But he was courageous anyway, and he always told the truth. What can we learn from him?

  • Giving Perspective of Christ in the Seasons of Life

The witness of John is staggering.  He took the season of his life to tell us the truth about himself, yes, but he will also testify to greatness of Jesus and give the perspective of his position with Jesus.  We must understand our identity and how it compares with Christ’s.

With our identities, we must start with who we are NOT. We are not the Christ, and even broader than that, we are not God. John the Baptist could have been a bit less clear in how he said this. He could have let them place just a little bit of hope in him, but he didn’t! He was decisive in his response. No! I am not the Christ, nor anyone else that you’ve been expecting.   I’m way less than Him!  I’m just a pointer!

So here’s my question, church. Are you pointing people to the Christ, like John the Baptist? Are we fulfilling one of your purposes as God’s people, to be his lighthouses and beacons for truth, pointing people to the Messiah, the ONE in whom you find LIFE!? Or, are you a lighthouse with its windows boarded up?

You have this wonderful light, who is Jesus himself, and you’re keeping it to yourself? You have this wonderful power and boldness in you, the Holy Spirit, God himself dwelling in you, and yet you hold it in?  Let’s give Jesus His proper perspective through all of the seasons of our lives.

  • A Man Sent from God

Wouldn’t it be awesome to meet the greatest man who ever lived?  Do you know who that is?  It is not Jesus. That is a good answer - but He is, after all, God.  Do you know who the greatest man was who ever lived?   His name is John, John the Baptist.  I say that because that is what Jesus said.

Matthew 11:11 “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist!”

There are not many people that the Bible gives us as much detail on as John the Baptist - yet his ministry probably only lasted about 6 months. He was unlike anybody else in the Bible - would strike fear in the average pastor now-a-days. I think John the Baptist would have sent even the best of us looking for cover.

He was crude, strong, yet humble. His diet was very weird and his wardrobe very limited. He had godly parents; a supernatural birth and was filled with the Spirit. The spirit of Elijah was on him and he was the for-runner of the Lord.  He would not have lasted one Sunday in most churches in the West. Yet Jesus calls him the greatest man who ever lived.   So come and learn about A Man Sent From God.

  • The Sin Nobody Will Admit To...

This last of Deca(10) is probably the most comprehensive and the one that we need victory over more than all.  Covetousness.  Coveting means desiring something that doesn’t belong to you.

Coveting makes people greedy and causes them to steal.  It drives people to kill, for their own ends.  It gives rise to unbridled lust  that can lead to adultery. It endangers mutual trust and causes people to lie to obtain what they don’t have – money, power, prestige or praise.  This commandment is comprehensive to the others that God gives. Coveting affects every human life – both those who chase God and those that don’t. But Christ taught sacrifice and selflessness.  Are you satisfied with just Jesus?  Paul was.  Only the Holy Spirt can restore our hearts to their intended balance.  Complete surrender to the lordship of Christ  will do.

  • Truth or Consequences

We know that Jesus says of himself, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”  God’s very nature is truth.  God cannot lie.  Lying, stretching or manipulating the truth can become second nature to us, even after conversion toward Jesus. It is a complicated habit to break. You owe your “neighbor” what they deserve - to go back let them know you lied and straighten it out.Lying certainly ruins both your reputation and your neighbor’s. But the most destructive living lie is the lie by telling lies we tell ourselves about ourselves.  We identify ourselves as the world sees us and not as God sees us.  This must change for growth and obedience.  Allow God’s Word to help.

  • Stop, Thief – Finders Keepers

The eighth commandment has been widely broken by both believers and unbelievers.  When looking at scripture, there are many examples of various ways this commandment can be broken.  A lot of theft is not direct, but indirect.  God even mentions how we can steal from Him. The New Testament clearly says, “you are not your own; you were bought with a price.”  Christ is our owner.  We are His creation.  We belong to Him.  Do we fail to give ourselves completely over to Him?  Are we stealing what is already His?
