  • Wonderful Counselor

Can you think of any situation in which Jesus said the wrong thing, or spoke out of turn, stuck His foot in His mouth, or remained silent when His words were needed?

His counsel is unfailing and flawless, perfectly suited to the situation, always practical and needed.  There is no problem on which He needs to “study up” or refer to a professional. I often feel frustrated to have to say to someone confused and in need, “I’m sorry, but I don’t know what to tell you.”  Jesus is never lacking for advice other an answer to satisfy your soul.

In any situation, in every challenge, He knows exactly what needs to be done.  His plan of action is infallibly and wonderfully right.  If you’re looking for guidance in your life, let me to a wonder of a counselor.

And note well: he’s not simply a good counselor or wise counselor but a wonderful counselor. And not only are there wonderful things about him, but He is also Himself a wonder!

  • Victory in Jesus

We love winning or being on a winning team.  In this song, that is not just a possibility but a promise for the believer.  We have “victory in Jesus” because Jesus’s sacrifice and subsequent defeat of death enable us to have total redemption and eternal life.  When we sacrifice our pride – our pettiness – our need to have the last word – our delusions of total control – our resistance to being led..when we allow Jesus to “heal our broken spirits, He gives us the victory!

The last verse that speaks of our heavenly home always fills us with so much hope!   Who doesn’t love singing about a mansion, streets of gold, a crystal sea, and the angels singing, but it will be nothing in comparison to seeing Jesus face to face and singing the song of victory beside Him. Live passionately knowing your home isn’t here!

  • Amazing Grace – My Chains are Gone

So much in life can sometimes shackle us and keep us from living truly free.  This song talks about how amazing grace has saved the one, who was once lost and blind.  Grace gave him hope and now he feels free from his chains because his God has ransomed him and shown him unending love.  Even if the world ends, the Lord will, always be with him.

The good news is that the rewards of this victory are not just enjoyed by Christ, they are freely available to those who come to Him through faith.  The writer to the Hebrews tells us His purpose was “that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Heb. 2:14-15).  My chains are gone!

  • Yet Not I, But Through Christ in Me

It is impossible to sing this song without proper perspective of the sacrifice Jesus made, for this is a very personal song of inspiration dependent on the knowledge of what He truly endured to take our place at the judgment seat of God.

Having Christ in us does not mean we do no more work, and neither does it mean we do it all. Rather, we contend and we contend with his energy ( Col. 1:29). Even our final resurrection is made possible by the gift of Christ in us. He will bring us to glory. In our weakness he is strong, and he will complete the work he has begun. He himself is within us, leading us home, step by step.

Our lives may not be adorned with blessings the world would recognize as intrinsically valuable, but we know our help and strength comes from the Lord and that His grace is sufficient at all times and in every circumstance. Therefore, may we proclaim with every semblance of humility in our being, "When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat: Yet not I, but through Christ in me!"

  • How Great Thou Art

Here’s the question that ultimately comes out in this song for today - Where do you see God?  This is a question that you can ask everyday – Where did you see God today?

This song refers to God as creator, His power and presence manifest in what He has made.  God made all the mighty wonders, He is larger than the whole universe, yet He also sent His Son to die in your place.  What?  Why?  Is it because you showed something good?  No.  He died for you while you were in your sins.  You have done nothing, nothing to deserve all of this, yet He redeemed you and me anyway.  This hymn rightly says:  “I scarce can take it in.” It’s just the greatness of God.

  • Christ Be Magnified

What is the story of what is on the “altar of your life?”  Are you able to find a place of rejoicing with Christ, regardless of the outcome?

Today’s worship song helps us to see who we are passionate for and why this passion steps into our everyday places.  Because of whom Christ Jesus is and what He came to do, we can’t help proclaiming to tell the truth of who Christ is and what He has done for us to others wherever the journey takes us.

Our old selves were crucified with Christ on the cross, and our new lives should look completely transformed into something unlike the old. They should look like Jesus.

Our lives are meant to be lived in such a way that they make much of Jesus. Christ should be magnified by how we live our lives! This week, would you purposefully pursue making much of Jesus at work and home? Would you magnify the name of Christ by how you speak and how you act?

  • It is Well

Who doesn’t need hope - Especially during a period of time when you experience loss?    Have you known that kind of peace in the midst of chaos in your life? Have you felt God’s love when you’ve walked through a tragedy? Is there something big and strong and comforting at the bottom of your responses to discouragement, disappointment, and loss?

In Christ, it can be well for you whatever the circumstance. He died for you. He sympathizes with your pain. He stays with you. And he promises to deliver you to himself, where he will forever guard you perfectly from sin, death, suffering, and grief.

In today’s great hymn, we find that everyone grieves and that everyone asks God why.  But how do you go on?  We God to “teach us to say” and to declare “I bear it no more!”   Atonement has come to the believer.  Christ has set it all straight and that brings tremendous peace in uncertainty.

  • Fearless Evangelism and a Final Encouragement

Today we will wrap up our series on the book of Colossians. Paul comes with a very simple plan for believers to begin to engage in evangelism. The plan is summarized very simply like this: “Let us pray to God and pursue him in order that we could make the best use of our time with unbelievers.” Paul wants us to pray to God and he wants us to pursue God so that when we have opportunities with non-believers, we make the best use of that time. We don’t have to be professionals. God doesn’t need you to feel like you have the perfect plan for evangelism. He simply wants you to be reliant. With each section we will be answering the question, “What do we learn from this about the Christian life?”

  • Freed to Obey Christ

For those in Christ, there is no longer any condemnation, and with that, he defeated the enemy. No longer do we have a record of debt against us, so we no longer need to obtain right standing with God by following a set of rules. Instead, all we need to do is live in Christ.
