Pastor Rhode begins a discussion on the Second Chief part of the Small Catechism, The Creed.

Vicar Belcher leads us through Commandments 5 to 10, all dealing with what we SHALL NOT DO to our neighbor. He begins the teaching with a definition of who our neighbor is. Commandments 5 through 10 are covered.

The direction of our salvation flows from Christ to us. It is wrong to think we choose Christ. The Cross of Jesus Christ wins the forgiveness of sins. Our salvation flows from God to us and is delivered in the sacraments of Holy Baptism and the Lord's Supper. Our faith is not obedience to the First Commandment. If your faith is based on your works then you have the doctrine wrong. Faith is both passive and active. Each are explained.

The Biblical understanding of the human conscience is discussed. Our conscience can be viewed as an organ. A bad conscience needs to be informed. This is done by cleansing it with the Gospel. Both self-justification and self atonement are distortions of the conscience. One distortion leads to pride and the other leads to despair. A good conscience is a forgiven conscience. A good conscience is not a conscience free of sin. The blood of Jesus purifies our conscience.
