Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of December 22, 2023.  Hollywood not holding anything back for Christmas weekend!  So many movies to watch!  First off is the fun, kid-friendly take on the vacation movie with a family of animated ducks heading south with "Migration." "Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom" is kind of a buddy-cop take on the superhero movie "The Iron Claw," which sees Zac Efron getting all swole on us as real-life wrestler Kevin Von Erich."Anyone But You" features a pretend couple at a wedding, and it's basically good-looking people in an exotic location getting into easily preventable mishaps, just like a rom-com should be!

A musical version of "The Color Purple" makes its debut on the big screen. George Clooney directs "The Boys in the Boat", and tells the true story of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team. "Ferrari" features Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, the carmaker and racer who is dealing with the potential fall of his company in the 1950s.  And "Percy Jackson & the Olympians" hits Hulu and DisneyPlus as a new series that is a little more faithful to the books than the movies were.  And finally, a Merry Christmas to each of you!

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of December 15, 2023.  "Wonka," the musical backstory of Willy Wonka, played here by Timothee Chalamet, is enjoyable for the whole family with a whimsically fun mix of magic and color. Over on streaming platforms is the family movie "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," the much anticipated animated sequel to the original some 23 years later, with Rocky and Ginger parenting a rebellious teenager of their own. "The Family Plan" over on AppleTV Plus sees Mark Wahlberg trying to protect his family from his past life and prevent them from knowing he used to be an assassin in the sometimes ridiculous but also kinda fun and funny action-comedy. And the second season of  "Reacher" is on Amazon Prime Video, perhaps the best action-thriller series on TV this year.  Alan Ritchson is perfectly cast, and the story zips along with great supporting characters. (And according to Producer KellieAnn, it lives up to the books better than the movie version of the series.)

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of December 8, 2023.  A character from the Book of Mormon comes to life in “The Oath,” a new movie that tells the story of the last survivor of an ancient American civilization and his oath to be faithful to God and preserve the record of his people. The final film from acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki tells the story of a boy who journeys to a magical land to hopefully save his mother, called “The Boy and the Heron.” A crazy movie called “Eileen” has great performances but switches directions so fast you might get whiplash.

On streaming, Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Mahershala Ali star in Netflix’s “Leave the World Behind,” a movie that you might just like more the less you know going in. Apple TV Plus has a documentary called  “John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial.” Netflix has a teen drama series, “My Family with The Walter Boys.” Tony Shalhoub is back as the eccentric Adrian Monk for another murder mystery in the Peacock exclusive, “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” DisneyPlus has “Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever.” And over on Amazon Prime Video, “Merry Little Batman” has Batman's kid defending Wayne Manor on Christmas Eve.

Also on the big screen is an action film by director John Woo with no dialogue called "Silent Night," and a concert film from Beyonce Knowles called "Renaissance: A Film By Beyonce.” Angel Studios uses a dystopian future to re-tell the Biblical story of Job in “The Shift." 

On Streaming, Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton give fine acting performances in the creepy-to-watch "May December" on Netflix.  And you can’t forget the Christmas comedies available on with Netflix’s  "Family Switch" and Amazon Prime Video’s "Candy Cane Lane."

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the Thanksgiving weekend of November 24, 2023.  The latest animated Disney movie, "Wish," is set to celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary in a likable but not quite loveable way. (After Andy’s What-to-watch segment of this podcast, producer KellieAnn Halvorsen gives her quick review of the film on this podcast.) But where the “Wish” falls a bit flat is the animated Netflix film "Leo” is a loveable hit! 

On the big screen, icons duel it out with Joaquin Phoenix starring as the title character in the epic movie "Napoleon" by director Ridley Scott, and Nicolas Cage as a random guy who starts popping up in the dreams of almost everybody on earth in "Dream Scenario."  

For streaming viewers, we’ 've got Kenan & Kel back together for "Good Burger 2" on streaming Paramount Plus. Melissa McCarthy plays a genie in the modern-day holiday rom-com "Genie" on streaming Peacock TV. Disney Plus puts together a tween heist squad determined to get the gifts from Santa in "The Naughty Nine." And finally,  a beautiful new adaptation of the classic tale "The Velveteen Rabbit" streams on Apple TV Plus.

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of November 17, 2023. The Trolls are back together as Justin Timberlake leads an N*Sync reunion in digital animated form in “Trolls Band Together.” But fighting for box office dominance is also the “Hunger Games” prequel movie, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." Also on the big screen is "Next Goal Wins," where Taika Waititi hilariously tells the story of the 2011 American Samoa national soccer team who just wanted to score a goal in a World Cup qualifier. And Horror fans have "Thanksgiving" from director Eli Roth, featuring some over-the-top gore from a guy dressed in a pilgrim costume as he terrorizes Plymouth, MA.

Steaming has lots of choices this weekend, including an animated series on Netflix that is the sequel/reboot/continuation of the story started in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" called "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," which brings back the entire voice cast from the 2010 movie.  SNL fans may get a kick out of the Please Don't Destroy guys in their movie on Peacock TV, "The Treasure of Foggy Mountain." Disney Plus’s "Dashing Through The Snow" sees Ludacris and his 8-year-old daughter trying to help Lil Rel Howrey's Nick recover a lost iPad on Christmas Eve. And Netflix’s "Best. Christmas. EVER!" has Heather Graham and hubby Jason Biggs take their two children to college friend Brandy's house, partly to prove that Brandy's life can't be nearly as great as her yearly Christmas letter makes it seem. Extra fun: It was filmed and set here in Utah!

In 1978, George Lucas was talked into producing the now infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, which was dissected before on Fan Effect (twice). Who knew a variety special based on one of the most beloved franchises ever would be so bad?! After all, it did feature a cardboard Millennium Falcon cockpit, a horribly makeup-caked Mark Hamill, Bea Arthur singing in an alien cantina, a cross-dressing Harvey Korman, and don’t forget the awkward scene of an elderly Wookie watching questionable holograms in the family living room. 

Now, nearly a half-century later, a new documentary, “A Disturbance in the Force: How the Star Wars Holiday Special Happened,” dives into a star-studded exploration of how such a cheesy disaster could ever have been produced and the Star Wars holiday it created in “Life Day.” In this episode of Fan Effect, Andy and KellieAnn sit down with the director, writer, and editor of the new documentary making waves at film festivals, Jeremy Coon, for an in-depth look into the bizarre special and making the documentary. 

While the documentary will be released digitally and on Blue-Ray on December 5, 2023, Utah fans are invited to a special free screening featuring a conversation with Jeremy Coon and fellow director Steve Kozak.
