November 17, 2023An in-depth look into the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special with documentary filmmaker Jeremy CoonIn 1978, George Lucas was talked into producing the now infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, which was dissected before on Fan Effect (twice). Who knew a variety special based on one of the most beloved franchises ever would be so bad?! After all, it did feature a cardboard Millennium Falcon cockpit, a horribly makeup-caked Mark Hamill, Bea Arthur singing in an alien cantina, a cross-dressing Harvey Korman, and don’t forget the awkward scene of an elderly Wookie watching questionable holograms in the family living room. Now, nearly a half-century later, a new documentary, “A Disturbance in the Force: How the Star Wars Holiday Special Happened,” dives into a star-studded exploration of how such a cheesy disaster could ever have been produced and the Star Wars holiday it created in “Life Day.” In this episode of Fan Effect, Andy and KellieAnn sit down with the director, writer, and editor of the new documentary making waves at film festivals, Jeremy Coon, for an in-depth look into the bizarre special and making the documentary. While the documentary will be released digitally and on Blue-Ray on December 5, 2023, Utah fans are invited to a special free screening featuring a conversation with Jeremy Coon and fellow director Steve Kozak. The Utah Film Center presents this screening which takes place on November 28, 2023, at the Salt Lake City Library, so reserve your tickets now. November 16, 2023‘The Marvels,’ and the good and the bad of movie expectationsFew movie universes face as much scrutiny as those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that can lead to a whole huge mess of expectations. The latest MCU film, "The Marvels" has been released with both good and bad expectations ahead of its opening weekend, which can explain its lukewarm reception. On this episode of Fan Effect, host Andy Farnsworth is joined by Nerd Knowlege Blog's Natalie Mollinet (and producer KellieAnn Halvorsen in spirit) to take a look at not just ‘The Marvels’ but how expectations impact our experiences as audiences. November 06, 2023Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Are you ready for another Elvis biopic?Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of November 3, 2023. Are you ready for another Elvis biopic? Well, "Priscilla is the latest one, and it's about the relationship between Elvis and Priscilla Presley as told through Sofia Coppola's direction. "The Marsh King's Daughter" is a tense, engaging story featuring Daisy Ridley and a dark menace in her character’s past. "What Happens Later" sees Meg Ryan return to the big screen for the first time in eight years in a rom-com with David Duchovny about two ex-lovers stuck in an airport together. "The Persian Version" is not for everyone, but it is a funny and poignant movie about an Iranian-American girl and her struggles with her two heritages. But the best thing Andy watched was probably "Radical," starring Eugenio Derbez, a true story about a teacher who got some of the worst-performing students in Mexico to love learning. Over on streaming services…Netflix’s "All the Light We Cannot See" is a streaming series based on the best-selling book about a blind girl who made illegal radio broadcasts in a German-occupied coastal French town near the end of World War II. "Sly," also on Netflix, is a streaming documentary that reminds us how amazing screenwriter Sylvester Stallone is and makes me wish I could watch movies with the guy. And Hulu has "Quiz Lady," an occasionally funny streaming movie about sisters (Awkwafina and Sandra Oh) who want to get on a Jeopardy-like show to earn money for their mom's gambling debts.
