FanX is almost here! Guests are already getting excited and for those brave enough to throw on a costume and go on a scavenger hunt, they are even winning multi-day passes! On the last Saturday of August, Fan Effect host KellieAnn Halvorsen was joined FanX’s Ro Malaga and numerous cosplayers for the first big event of the FanX season, the Cosplay Games. From a cosplay Hall-of-Famer to a family all dressed as Loki variants, everyone had something fun to say about the joy of cosplay, the comradery of Utah’s fan culture, and what they are looking forward to in the upcoming con.

Interviewees include photographer Mark Loertscher, Mindy Madsen, Eric Allan Hall and the Lee/Fredrickson clan, brother and sister Kreston Lee and Melinda Lee Fredrickson, with kids Tyler, Samuel, Jasmine, Adriella, and Abigail Fredrickson. Many of these cosplayers volunteer with Heroes Engaging Real Organizations in Charity, Kids Heroes Foundation, and can be found socializing on the Cosplay Utah Facebook group.

FanX is back, and bigger and better than ever! When the worldwide coronavirus pandemic canceled FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention in 2020, organizers promised to be back ready for an even greater Xperience in 2021. Now the comic and pop culture event is poised to deliver in less than a month, when fans of all shapes and sizes converge on the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City September 16-18, 2021. And they have added extra Xperiences like a FanX Quest, a workshop room, a tabletop gaming charity event, and even a massive cosplay contest with a massive award. At the 2021 Utah Renaissance Faire, families and fans are excited to gather outdoors and escape from our modern hustle-and-bustle to a simpler day of food, entertainment, and maybe a mermaid or two. Taking place at Thanksgiving Point the final weekend of August, guests can sample the wares of blacksmiths and artisans, play-pillage with vikings, cheer on full armored knights jousting on warhorses, and dance the evening away with (reenacted) royalty. All with COVID protocols in place to keep visitors safe. From a family-friendly feature film based on a beloved toddler tv series to a stunning sci-fi film noir team-up of Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson, there are three good movies to watch this weekend. Hugh Jackman explores people’s memories and his own feelings in Warner Brothers’ ‘Reminiscence’ solving a mystery surrounding his ‘Greatest Showman’ fellow cast member Rebecca Ferguson. Michael Keaton is back on the big screen in ‘The Protégé’, which features a cat-and-mouse game between him and skilled assassin Maggie Q. And for family-friendly fodder, ‘PAW Patrol: The Movie’ is harmless fun for kids and has nothing for parents to bark at.

And lastly, Star Trek fans finally get some new content! Season two of the animated series "Star Trek: Lower Decks" premiered this week on Paramount plus streaming.
