The Chamoru renaissance is a broad movement for cultural, linguistic and political empowerment for the Chamoru people in the Marianas, whose origins can be found in the 1970s. What we’ve seen in more recent decades are the seeds planted in the 1970s bloom into movements to promote the Chamoru language, protect the environment, rediscovered traditional jewelry and develop new styles of Chamoru dance.

This episode of Fanachu featured attorney Kevin Camacho who refers to himself as a child of the Chamoru renaissance, because of his participation with Chamoru cultural groups such as Ginen i Hila' I Maga'taotao Siha and events such as attending FESTPAC.

The second episode of Matå'pang's Canoe Club from Dr. Manny Cruz (the founder of Fanachu!) features an interview with Machålek Sindålu, who is  descendant of Maga'låhi Matå'pang who infamously killed San Vitores, the Jesuit who brought Catholicism to Guam in the 17th century.

Matå'pang's Canoe Club episodes are exclusively available for Fanachu! Patrons as soon as they are uploaded. Starting this month, they will be made available three months after being premiered for the general listening audience.

Earlier this year, Bill 291, the Guam Heartbeat Act of 2022 was introduced into the Guam Legislature, threatening to further erode the reproductive rights of women in Guam. For this episode of Fanachu! Stephanie Lorenzo and Kiana Yabut from the group Famalao’an Rights discussed Bill 291 as well as recent activism, protests and community organizing on Guam in defense of women's reproductive rights.

In 1966 a young high school student wrote a letter to the editor of the Guam Daily News (forerunner of the Pacific Daily News) expressing outrage at the paper’s calls for Chamorus to stop speaking their language. In the 20th century the US Navy and later the Government of Guam prohibited the speaking of Chamoru in schools and public spaces, and so this discriminatory ideology was common, but it was rare for Chamorus to speak out publicly against it. 

This Fanachu episode features that high school student Rose Franquez Brown, who will discuss her reflection on that experience as well as her recent attempts to learn the Chamoru language.
