Earlier this year, Bill 291, the Guam Heartbeat Act of 2022 was introduced into the Guam Legislature, threatening to further erode the reproductive rights of women in Guam. For this episode of Fanachu! Stephanie Lorenzo and Kiana Yabut from the group Famalao’an Rights discussed Bill 291 as well as recent activism, protests and community organizing on Guam in defense of women's reproductive rights.

In 1966 a young high school student wrote a letter to the editor of the Guam Daily News (forerunner of the Pacific Daily News) expressing outrage at the paper’s calls for Chamorus to stop speaking their language. In the 20th century the US Navy and later the Government of Guam prohibited the speaking of Chamoru in schools and public spaces, and so this discriminatory ideology was common, but it was rare for Chamorus to speak out publicly against it. 

This Fanachu episode features that high school student Rose Franquez Brown, who will discuss her reflection on that experience as well as her recent attempts to learn the Chamoru language.
