Steve Bannon's lawyers were in court this past week trying to prevent their client from going to jail for violating a Congressional subpoena. The lawyers ended up getting utterly humiliated by the judge overseeing the case when they tried to argue that Bannon had "executive privilege" and therefore couldn't be compelled to testify. The judge made very short work of that argument by getting the lawyers to admit that privilege couldn't exist in that case

Also, Donald Trump was left stunned in the middle of his Florida rally this past week when the audience erupted in loud "boos" when he gave praise to Republican lawmaker Carlos Gimenez. Trump asked the audience "what is going on" because even he didn't understand why the crowd suddenly became so angry at the mere mention of the name of a staunch Trump ally. Gimenez has been a surrogate for Trump during the debates he's missed, and he endorsed him all the way back in April, so the whole thing was very confusing for everyone.

And according to a new report from The Daily Beast, Marjorie Taylor Greene has spent roughly the entire year trashing Lauren Boebert to their House colleagues, and using language that is typically reserved for the Jerry Springer Show. There are a few obvious reasons why Greene is so vile towards Boebert, but for the most part they are on the same team and these kinds of attacks would appear counter productive. But Farron thinks he's knows what's happening, and he explains his theory in this segment.

Kevin McCarthy is still angry about being ousted as the House Speaker, and he wants revenge against Matt Gaetz. During a brief conversation with a CNN reporter, McCarthy said that Congress would be a lot better if Gaetz were no longer around, but he said that would be a decision left up to the caucus. Not only does this show that McCarthy wants vengeance, but it also strongly suggests that this is a conversation that may already be taking place.

Also, Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump lawyer Christopher Kise to apologize to prosecutors in court this past week, after Kise verbally attacked the prosecutors. Kise told prosecutors that they should check the internet for job openings, and suggested that they would be right at home in Vladimir Putin's Russia. These are tactics that are used by lawyers when they have their backs against the wall and have no actual defense strategy.

Finally, during his rally in Florida this week, Donald Trump admitted to the crowd that he's only having trouble in court from judges that were appointed by Democrats, and that he's had nothing but smooth sailing from conservative judges. This was a very clear wink and nod to Judge Aileen Cannon, the only conservative judge that Trump is dealing with, and he happens to be the one that appointed her. It wouldn't be surprising to see prosecutors use this against him if they want to file for a motion for recusal.

 Republican Representative Lauren Boebert wanted to score some much-needed points with her voters by inserting a provision to a budget bill that would forbid the government from sending money to "sanctuary cities." The only problem with her motion, as Democratic Representative Steny Hoyer pointed out to her, is that this bill didn't even do that, and he put Boebert on her heels when trying to get an answer from her about what she was doing.

Also, Judge Tanya Chutkan sided with prosecutors this week, and ruled that Donald Trump will have to officially declare if he's going to use an "advice of counsel" defense in his upcoming trial next year. If Trump says he will use that defense, then it was made clear that he can no longer claim attorney-client privilege over his documents, nor can he claim executive privilege, forcing him to give prosecutors everything they've ever wanted. If he declines, then he can't throw his lawyers under the bus. Farron explains how badly this hurts Trump. 

And a new court filing this week from special prosecutor Jack Smith's office shows that his team is preparing to pin the blame for the Capitol Riot squarely on Donald Trump during the main federal trial against him next year. The filing makes it clear that inciting the riot was Trump's way to intimidate members of Congress into voting to NOT certify the 2020 election results, or at the very least to delay the inevitable. This could open up a whole new area of liability for the former President.

Finally, Trump lawyer Alina Habba made a complete fool of herself in court this week while Ivanka Trump was on the stand. Habba tried to object to the contents of an email from Ivanka, claiming that the email was never actually sent, so it shouldn't be at the trial. The prosecution then had to point out that not only was the email sent, but it was from a batch of documents that Habba and her team introduced. She objected to her own evidence and didn't even realize it. Farron explains what this tells us about Trump's legal team.

Donald Trump and his legal team are hoping to overwhelm the court by calling as many as 127 witnesses to the stand in the ongoing fraud trial. The list actually suggests it could be more than that, and it isn't because there are that many people who can attest to Trump's innocence - it is another delay tactic meant to overwhelm the court and confuse everyone in the courtroom. This is what you do when you don't actually have a solid case to make.

And former Republican politician-turned talking head Rick Santorum offered some reasons as to why Republicans got their butts stomped in this week's elections. According to Santorum, the problem is that Democrats are offering "sexy things" on the ballot that are attracting younger voters, while Republicans just want to do bad things that voters don't like. He may not have said that second part out loud, but his implication was loud and clear.

Also, late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel went after Donald Trump during a monologue this week, telling his audience that the "ketchup on the walls" is closing in on Trump, a reference to reports that Trump threw ketchup-covered plates at the wall in fits of rage. But he also educated his audience about Donald Trump's delay tactics with all of his trials, again reminding a seemingly-non political audience about what's really happening that they may not be paying attention to.

Finally, Alina Habba is having a bad week, and it appears that her sanity might be the price that she pays for her nonstop media appearances. During an appearance with Larry Kudlow this week, Habba said that her team is preparing to file a motion for a mistrial because Trump (allegedly) wasn't allowed to speak enough while he was on the stand, and in another media appearance she claimed that the defense had been "executed" before the trial. She appears to be losing her grip on reality just as bad as Trump himself.

Alina Habba's behavior both in the courtroom and outside the courtroom on Monday stunned legal experts, as Habba routinely made a complete fool of herself and tried to engage in mudslinging with attorney general Letitia James. Experts said that it is evidence from her behavior that not only does she not know how to try cases, but that she also doesn't even know the basics about how to act in front of a judge - and both of those things are going to doom her client.

Also, late last week, Judge Aileen Cannon issued a stern warning to prosecutors in the Trump documents case, telling them that she would punish them and ignore their future filings if they didn't stick to the 220 word limit that she had set for them. The offending filing was where prosecutors warned Cannon that she was getting played by Trump, but she apparently didn't want to hear it. Calls for Cannon to be removed from the case are growing louder, but legal experts appear to agree that it is too late to have her removed.

And Marjorie Taylor Greene managed to shock the entire country this week by not only saying something that was true, but admitting a harsh truth about how bad the Republican Party is for American voters. During a brief conversation with a CNN reporter, Greene said that the American public is sick of Republicans never doing anything for them, and she admitted that she's also tired of this. But Greene's admission comes with a caveat, showing that she still doesn't really understand why voters don't like her Party.

Finally, most of the attention from the media following Donald Trump's testimony in the fraud trial was on his erratic behavior and the stern warnings to him and his lawyers from the judge. But in between the theatrics, there was actual legal questioning, and at one point Trump clearly admitted that they submitted incorrect property values to banks. That is literally what he was sued for doing, the very thing he swore he never did, and then he admitted to it on the stand.

During a conservative conference in Florida over the weekend, a mentally disturbed Donald Trump told the audience that he miraculously won ALL 50 states in the 2020 election, and the crowd didn't hesitate to go along with his reality-defying comments. Trump's mental problems are becoming too overt to ignore, and the fact that his followers don't have a problem with it might actually be even more concerning. 

Also, during a conversation with CNN, indicted Republican Congressman George Santos claimed that his constituents don't really seem to care about the barrage of lies that he told during his election last year. He suggested that no one voted for him because of those lies, but that's a claim that he can't prove, either. The truth is that his voters voted for a man that does not exist, and now the fraud is facing a stiff prison sentence if he's convicted

And according to insiders that spoke to Rolling Stone, Rudy Giuliani has made it abundantly clear that he will never accept any plea deal in exchange for flipping on Donald Trump. This might be the dumbest declaration that Giuliani has ever made, as he's currently hemorrhaging cash and lawyers with his multiple legal fights. The former mayor of New York's only real hope is taking a plea deal, and when he gets backed into a corner, his promise to Trump might be worth absolutely nothing.

Finally, a lawyer who has previously deposed Donald Trump for a civil lawsuit offered some tips for how prosecutors can take down Trump without much work at all. Specifically, the lawyer says that the best thing you can do is to just allow Trump to talk, and he'll eventually sink himself. The lawyer also said you can get Trump to open up even more if you come at him with flattery, rather than going into a deposition or questioning him on the stand in a hostile way.

Even though the fraud trial taking place in New York is not related at all to the criminal trials pending against Donald Trump, legal experts say that some of the evidence presented at the current trial could be used to help convict Trump in the other trials. Specifically, some of the evidence appears to undermine Trump's main legal defense, which is that he geniunely believed that the 2020 election was stolen. But a piece of evidence introduced last week in the fraud trial actually destroys that claim.

And Donald Trump has decided that he's going to try his hand once again at starting an online university, even though his first effort - Trump University - was shut down and sued for defrauding "students." That lawsuit resulted in Trump paying out $25 million to angry people who thought they were actually going to get an education, and it seems unlikely that his new efforts will end any differently. 

Also, during a bizarre statement in the House late last week, Lauren Boebert falsely claimed that it was the government that shut down her beloved restaurant, Shooters, even though she admits that the restaurant was always filthy. Not only did the government NOT shut her down, but admitting that you didn't do a good job cleaning your business isn't exactly a winning statement. Farron  explains why that restaurant was actually shut down, and why that matters for someone like Boebert who may be out of a job in the next year. 

Finally, Ivanka Trump has lost her appeal to avoid testifying in the New York fraud trial against her family, and now she's asking the courts to just completely pause the trial until she can work it into her schedule. Ivanka claims that she can't come and testify in New York on a school night because she has kids, and apparently her husband doesn't ever help with any of that. The court has entertained Ivanka's antics long enough, and they need to force her to show up and spill the beans.

Republican Congressman Ken Buck announced that he wasn't going to seek reelection this past week, and he managed to take a sledgehammer to the Republican Party as he announced his impending exit. Buck, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus, said that there are too many leaders in his Party that are "lying to America", mostly about the 2020 election, but there are plenty of lies coming from his Party. That's not all he said to take down his friends, and Farron discusses his full statement. 

Also, an expert witness testified at Donald Trump's New York fraud trial this past week, and he absolutely destroyed Trump's favorite talking point, and possibly his main legal defense, during his testimony. The witness claimed that the fraudulent numbers that Trump gave to the banks resulted in him getting a lower interest rate than he would have otherwise received, which means his scam cost banks a combined $168 MILLION DOLLARS. This is bad news for Trump.

Finally, Donald Trump can't seem to remember what city he's in, what politicians he's run against, who was president at certain points in history, and those are just incidents that have happened in the past two weeks. The former President's brain appears to be rapidly declining, and at the same time he's trying to convince the public that he's the only candidate that is mentally competent enough to hold the job. But the media - and his political opponents - are starting to pay attention, and that could be devastating to his reelection chances.

Marjorie Taylor Greene stayed as classy as she's ever been this week after her resolution to censure Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib failed in the House. Greene went on to attack Republicans who voted against it, including Lauren Boebert. Greene referred to Boebert as "vaping groping Lauren" and then called Republican Representative Chip Roy "Colonel Sanders," which actually confused everyone. 

Also, Donald Trump, Jr. admitted during his testimony in the New York fraud trial this week that he signed the fraudulent documents that went to the banks, but he said it was because he would just sign any paper that was placed in front of him. While that would be a reasonable excuse if this were a criminal trial, the nature of this civil trial means that a statement like this could mean the end of the Trump Organization in the state. Farron explains the impact of Junior's admission. 

And finally, according to a new report based on conversations with those close to Donald Trump, the former president was so irate about the trial date set by Judge Tanya Chutkan that he screamed profanities at his own lawyer for about half an hour. Trump allegedly screamed at Todd Blanche, one of his many lawyers, for allegedly costing him the election because the trial date would take place right in the middle of the primaries.

Federal prosecutors, led by special counsel Jack Smith, have put in a filing with Judge Aileen Cannon, warning her to not allow herself to be manipulated by Donald Trump and his lawyers. Trump's legal team is trying to push the trial back even further, and Cannon signaled a little bit of willingness to do so this week. But Trump's legal team is making dubious claims that don't hold up, and prosecutors don't want Cannon to buy into their garbage. 

Also, it was revealed in the New York fraud trial this week that Donald Trump actually tried to use an article from Forbes as a proof of income and worth while attempting to obtain a bank loan. These articles are rough estimates and are not meant to be used as actual financial documents, and Trump's chances of saving his company appear to be dying with each passing day of the trial, especially with new information like this emerging.

And Donald Trump's adult sons took the stand in the fraud trial this week, and it didn't end up well for the defendants. Junior claimed that he really wasn't paying attention to anything that was going on, and that he relied on his CPAs to come up with numbers. Eric also said that he didn't know what was happening, so both children are claiming stupidity. But the big thing that DID NOT happen was that neither explicitly said the numbers were accurate, and that is very important.

Finally, Ivanka Trump successfully managed to get her testimony at the fraud trial pushed back to next week due to a "schedule conflict," and now she's trying to get it dismissed altogether by filing an emergency motion. She's already lost on these grounds, and it is likely that her new motion will end differently. But she is clearly desperate to avoid taking the stand, and that tells us a lot about what she knows and possibly even what she was involved in.
