One of the demographics most profoundly impacted by the COVID-19 management has been children and families with small children.
Here are a few stats our team recently found...
A survey done by Sick Kids in Ontario found that across 6 areas of mental health (depression, anxiety, irritability, attention span, hyperactivity and obsessive-compulsive behaviour) over 70% of school-aged children and over 66% of pre-schoolers had declined in at least one area since the pandemic began.
Those on the autism spectrum reported the greatest deterioration. The study reported that one very concerning finding was the significant proportion of otherwise healthy school-aged children who were experiencing increased depression, anxiety, irritability or reduced attention spans.
Another study on the other side of the nation through the BC Children’s Hospital showed two-thirds of children reported having anxiety or suicidal thoughts during the pandemic, up 30% before COVID. These stats are not insignificant.
Here to discuss how COVID has been impacting children and their families, and what we can do to support, is Elyse Schipper. She is the executive director of PLEO a non-profit group of parents and caring Canadians bringing practical assistance to families in need. Joining her is child and family therapist, Nathan Pillai, who works with children’s counselling at the Bayridge Counselling Centre, a respected service provider in Burlington.
Both of these individuals are from Ontario, one of the areas of Canada with the strictest COVID-19 lock-down protocols affecting children.
Thank you for joining us.

In November of 2020 Canadian Heritage Minister, The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, introduced Bill C-10 to extend similar regulations to internet media - such as Netflix, Spotify and Amazon Prime - that currently govern Canadian television and broadcast stations.
Canada’s current broadcasting act is a few decades old and many acknowledge that an update is indeed in order as it has not kept up with the changing world of public communications - namely digital and social media content.
This bill passed through the House of Commons at 1:30am prior to the House rising for the summer in late June. MPs voted down section 4.1 the portion of the bill which would have protected user generated content. This means that if this bill receives royal assent that user generated content will become regulated by the government. This is the precise point that is alarming many Canadians on all sides of the political spectrum. The concern in this is that every day Canadians, or grass roots journalists, could become increasingly censored and that this would be a massive encroachment on individual free speech.
It is particularly hair raising that this type of legislation is being pushed in what many believe will be a federal election year.
After being passed through the House of Commons Senators were asked by the government to rubber stamp it before they rose for the summer without significant study in the Senate. This is the point where the discussion becomes two fold — not only about potentially flawed legislation that could impact the charter right of all Canadians to free speech, but also the undermining of our democratic institutions — namely the Senate which is tasked with being the chamber of slow second thought on important legislation like this.
One of a growing number of Senators speaking out about this is Senator Pamela Wallin. Prior to her appointment to the Senate, she had a thriving career as a media entrepreneur and journalist with CTV and host on Canada AM. Her media career had a focus on domestic and international politics. In the wake of 911 she was appointed Consul General of Canada in New York and served for 4 years, named to the Special Independent Panel on Canada’s Future Role in Afghanistan and was then appointed to the Senate in 2008. She joins us to discuss C-10.

In early May conflict flared up in the middle east between Hamas and Israel. This led to multiplied thousands of rockets being fired and a conflict lasting more than a week leaving more than 200 people dead in Israel and the occupied territories. Most casualties were in the coastal region of the Gaza Strip where Hamas was firing heavily from. A truce was mediated by Egypt emphasizing to both parties the importance of protecting innocent civilians.
This year’s violence is a part of an ongoing conflict that has now lasted more than 70 years - for most Jewish Israelis and Palestinians it is all they have ever known.
Here in Canada, in spite of concerns surrounding possible spread of COVID-19 protests occurred in various locations across the nation in support of Hamas. Many in the Jewish-Canadian community made statements regarding Israel’s right to defend themselves from Hamas attacks and also called for peace.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will provide $25 million to Palestinian civilians affected by the recent conflict. With 10 million going towards urgent assistance for affected civilians, 10 million going to rebuilding efforts and 5 million to peace-building initiatives between Palestinians and Israelis.
The loss of human life has been nothing short of devastating and many in Israel - Jewish, Israeli and Arab citizens alike are driving for peace holding solidarity rallies in regions where they have lived together peacefully for decades.
Here with me from just outside of Jerusalem to give his perspective on the recent events, insight on the history that has led to this point and possible solutions for lasting peace is Calev Myers.
Calev is an accomplished Israeli attorney, civil rights advocate and founder of ARISE – Alliance to Reinforce Israel’s Security and Economy.
Thanks for joining us.

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day and on this week’s program we are going to be featuring a series of clips highlighting the voices of our beloved First Peoples.
Front of mind for many right now is, of course, the horrific recent uncovering of over 215 graves found near the Kamloops Indian Residential School in BC — many of these graves are believed to be of First Nations children who were taken by force from their families by the government of the day and placed in the schools to be forcibly re-educated.
The last residential school in Canada, Grollier Hall in the Northwest Territories, was closed in 1997. The Kamloops discovery has brought the raw pain of this part of our national history to the surface again for Canadians nationwide. Many have responded through moving demonstrations such as the 215 sets of children’s shoes placed on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery. The findings have also brought renewed calls for the government to continue to take action on the 94 recommendations of the truth and reconciliation commission, one of which was a recommendation to uncover missing gravesites.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission is a part of a history of efforts by various governments to bring healing and reconciliation to this part of our history. In 2008, with all party support, Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a public statement of apology in the House of Commons to the First Peoples of Canada for the atrocities of the residential schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was formed with the goal of walking out ongoing reconciliation in our nation through documenting the painful stories of the residential schools, sharing them with Canadians and giving recommendations to the government of Canada of what further efforts could be done.
Though some progress has been made on the recommendations, to this day, the majority still remain un-completed. Also notable in this ongoing journey was something that happened in 2010 called the Journey of Forgiveness.
The Journey of Forgiveness was a grassroots faith based initiative spearheaded by Chief Kenny Blacksmith in which First Nations, Metis and Inuit faith leaders traveled Canada releasing forgiveness to the government, the church and Canadians at large. The Journey of Forgiveness culminated in a powerful Summit in Ottawa where Minister of Indigenous Affairs at the time, The Honourable Church Strahl, attended and participated at the highest level.
Many efforts have been made to bring healing, and some ground has been taken in the realm of awareness and reconciliation, but over a decade later it is clear there is still much work to be done — it is also clear that there is much will in Canadians from seat to sea, to see the healing that our nation so desperately needs.
So, it is with all this in mind that we share with you both some eye-opening and also inspiring clips from indigenous leaders today.
Before we dive into this however, I also wanted to let you know that on National Indigenous Peoples Day this year, June 21st, there will be a day of prayer led by a group of First People’s Leaders called The RETURN. If you are a person of faith we would like to invite you to participate. Please visit www.thecrymovement.com and if you are watching this program after the 21st, you can also visit the site to participate by watching the archive there.
Thank you so much for joining me for this painful, but important, conversation. It is only by facing our past with courage, compassion, humility, contriteness, repentance and reconciliation that we will truly be able to move forward, by heaven’s grace, to see the healing our nation needs. Let our hearts be steady in continuing to work to this end.

Dr. Charles Hoffe made international headlines early in the year when he wrote an open letter to BC's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry.
In his letter he explained negative neurological impacts, seemingly linked to the COVID-19 vaccination, that he was observing among some of his first nation's patients. He also asked for input from her on how to treat these patients.
His letter was met with both fierce opposition and affirmation.
A couple weeks ago I caught up with Dr. Hoffe to get an update on his situation. This is the FULL version for our social media friends only.

As of May 25th the Government of Canada has reported 1,364,396 COVID-19 cases, 25,312 deaths ,and - thankfully - 1,289,263 have recovered (about 94%).
Top of mind for Canadians for over a year has been their health.
In spite of this you might be surprised to know that the current treatment for COVID-19 (for most Canadians) is no treatment at all -- until someone is sick enough to go to ICU.
Though he has held many leadership positions in his medical career, Dr. Ira Bernstein is currently unilaterally focused on his family practice and keeping people healthy in a COVID-19 world.
He joins with us to talk about simple, cost effective, and safe things we all can do to stay healthy AND what can be done if you find yourself fighting COVID-19 symptoms.
Please watch and please share this very important interview.

In 2015, C-14 was passed and assisted suicide was legalized by the Liberal Government making it available to terminally ill adults with incurable ailments and who were expected to die in the “foreseeable future”.
A short 6 years later, on March 17th, 2021 changes were made to the law to expand eligibility to those who are not terminal, to reduce safeguards by removing the 2 doctor review requirement previously in place and to make it available to the mentally vulnerable by 2023 — all this means that Canada now has the most expansive access to assisted suicide in the world.
From 2016-2019 Stats Canada recorded almost 14,000 Canadians died by medical assistance in dying.
On the Government of Canada’s website it states that no healthcare professional will be forced by the federal government to participate in medical assistance in dying - whether or directly or by referral — however it also goes on to state that this is ultimately in under the regulatory supervision of the provinces.
Since 2016, we have seen that not all provinces are equal on this issue, Manitoba, for example, has passed conscience protection legislation — Ontario’s College of Physicians, however, requires doctors to participate in effective referrals for example — even if it is against a physician's conscience.
In describing the work of one of my guests today, MP Kelly Block, MP Garnet Genuis posted this on his website:
"Freedom of conscience is the first fundamental freedom set out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is a value for which Canadians fought and died so that we could live in freedom and peace. When medical aid in dying was legalized in 2015, we were told that euthanasia would not become a matter of coercion. Yet, with Bill C-7, patients are at risk of being pressured to receive a medically assisted death and doctors are being pressured to be complicit in deaths that they would not advise. Nobody should be forced to die or to facilitate death against their wishes. This is why conscience protections are paramount. He goes onto to make this statement about MP Kelly Block’s new federal bill, C-268. This bill would ensure that the fundamental freedom of conscience is upheld by making it a criminal offence for physicians and healthcare practitioners to be coerced or intimidated to provide or refer a patient for assisted suicide or euthanasia. The bill would also make it a criminal offence to fire or refuse to hire for the same reason. This is why they matter for both patients and doctors alike."
MP Kelly Block who represents the riding of Carlton Trail—Eagle Creek, Saskatchewan, is with us to discuss her private members bill as well as Dr. Michell Korvemaker, a physician from Ontario and member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association of Canada who has been speaking out about the importance of protecting physician conscience rights for the last several years.
This is another eye-opening conversation.
Thank you for joining us. Please share.
