On May 31, 2003 the body of a 40-year-old woman was found wrapped in a mattress cover and left in a shopping cart behind a dry cleaners in downtown Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. She had been strangled to death by a customer who had paid to have sex with her and became enraged upon discovering she was transgender. His defence? The highly controversial “gay panic” argument was used in court and her murderer was sentenced to just 9 years in prison for manslaughter.

On April 13, 1979 the body of a 19-year-old college student was found floating in a small body of water not far from her dorm in Quebec, Canada. She had been missing for 5 months and was initially thought by police to be a runaway, but after her body was found it was suggested that she was simply the victim of an overdose. However, in 2002, evidence came to light that suggested her death may actually be linked to a possible serial killer.
