  • #69. The Social Dilemma
FGC Philosophy #69. The Social Dilemma
We need to talk about the impact Social media has had on our lives. I also want to talk about the IMPORTANT topic of accountability. Accountability for one's own actions, and accountability for one's feelings. I've been seeing people say things such as “Twitter is trash, it brings out the awful in everyone myself included.” Social media is a reflection of what we put out, BUT there are some things that are important to know about social media. That's where the docudrama The Social Dilemma comes into play. The Social Dilemma is a Netflix Docudrama that has prominent employees and former employees of the top social media platforms. They share their concerns and experiences about what makes social media dangerous.

I'm joined by my guest Sumguy who shares his insight on the experience as well.
Thank you everyone for the continued support as always. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.

  • #67. The Dangers of Bias and Misinformation
This topic is incredibly important. This episode only scratches the surface, but it's a start. Sumguy and I discuss the paradox of the two realities USA seems to be living in. You have one side taking this pandemic very seriously, and the other side that (on different levels) denies the seriousness of Covid-19. This episode was heavily inspired by a clip taken from my stream (links here).

  • #66. Nintendo Shut's Down Online Smash Bros. Tournament
On November 19th, tournament organization Big House made an announcement (links below) stating they will be unable to host their online tournament. This announcement sent ripples through the smash and FGC community as the conversations spread on Twitter. Nintendo sent a cease and desist to the tournament organizer. The reason giving was in part due to Slippi, a netplay modification for Super Smash Bros. Melee PC mod.

The conversation with Ragnarok and Xedane was streamed live (link below) after the online tournaments. Thank you to my guest and for you the listeners for continuingto be awesome!

  • #65. Loss of Trust in Media, Censorship, and Freedom of Speech
This episode was inspired by a few questions and ideas.
How do you know if our news source(s) are reliable?
How do we dive down into our sources and know if we're being lied to?
What news outlets can you trust?
How do we find trustworthy sources of information?
Questions the sources that you do trust
How does misinformation affect censorship and our freedom of speech??
    Referenced Videos
    Tomi vs Brian Debate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWmplvUva8s&t=805s&ab_channel=ElexMichaelson
My thoughts on the news outlets
It feels like I can no longer watch the mainstream media. I've felt like this long before the Trump administration, but now it's purely conformation. Our news sources are biased and willing to push a narrative. Getting the news wrong is an understandable mistake, we all make mistakes. The issue is how many major and minor news outlets handle those mistakes. some don't even acknowledge they got the news wrong. They just move on to a new story and a new issue. Some brush over their mistakes as if it wasn't a big deal and others acknowledge their mistakes and promise to do better.
I wonder, how many times can these mistakes happen before we lose trust? For me and many others, that trust is already gone. We have to double and triple-check that a source of news is accurate, be skeptical of everyone, or just trust an agenda to believe in. I've watched as both the left and the right push a narrative that attacks the opposing side. Rather than giving unbias news, they insult our intelligence by telling us what we should feel.
In no way am I saying that news outlets are completely dishonest, but I'm cautious of what I believe and act on. I don't think there's any crazy conspiracy, I believe news outlets are willing to "get it wrong" to be first, or hit their numbers. I also think that there are major news lets that are incredibly biased one way or the other.

People also tend to stay within their echo chambers. Talking to people online who believe what they believe, and getting news from people who think how they think. It appears many people aren't willing to look outside their comfort zone to confirm a  story, they believe the first thing they're told. Long story short, bias and inaccurate news, and echo chambers are a dangerous combination. A partially wrong story can spread like wildfire in an instant.

I'm starting to ramble so I will save further thoughts for a future episode perhaps.  As I write this, I can't help but think about how complicated this issue is. With that, tell me what you think about this topic. Do you agree that most news outlets are biased? Do you feel news outlets should have more accountability to be sure to get the story right? Share your thoughts with me.

Thank you all for the continued support in these trying times.

  • #64. The State of American w/ Guest Sumguy
Trigger Warning: If you are not able to discuss or hear opinions that oppose your own please don't proceed. In this podcast, we'll be talking about political and racial issues from our perspectives. This episode (like all of my others) is intended to spark conversation and to get people to think outside their own paradigm. Some of these topics may be sensitive to you or people you know. Nothing we say is intended for malice or harm.
This episode was recorded the night of the election. The goal was to try to explain my frustrations about our situation in a way that could be a learning opportunity. After several attempts to record it solo, I realized this was easier said than done. After a few minutes, I'd work myself into a rage slammed my fist on my desk. I decided to call up an old friend who I'll refer to as Sumguy. Sumguy has been my friend since college in Alabama. Over the years he's been like a brother to me, someone I can talk to openly and honestly, and always has the outcome be productive.
Our backgrounds are VERY different. Sumguy is a white man that grew up in an area of the south that wasn't as diverse. Despite his situation, he's been one of the most supportive members of my life.

  • #63. Failing Doesn't Mean You're A Failure
    Hey all,

I've been struggling with the motivation to upload consistent podcast episodes for a while now. This lack of motivation and execution has led to some stress and frustration. This was added on top of the growing frustrations of living in a pandemic. I was starting to see myself as a failure in podcasting and other important areas of my life. As I work on those areas I had to stop, reflect, and evaluate myself so far. That self-reflection is in-part what inspired this episode.

This episode is all about failure and failing. Everybody fails, and it's important to learn to accept failure rather than letting it affect you negatively. Many of us alter our behavior just to avoid failure. When what we want is usually on the other side of failure. Any good salesman will tell you that rejection (failure) is all part of the process, but for many of us, avoiding failure comes naturally, it's the only logical decision. Somehow you've convinced yourself that avoiding.
Does this sound like you? Leave a comment and share your experience.

What's does the future hold for FGC Philosophy?
    "Podcast Character crisis?"
A "character crisis" is a term used when a fighting game player can not settle a "main" character. In a way, I've been struggling with the theme and topic of this podcast. I very much want to break away from talking about JUST FGC stuff. In some ways, I feel restricted by the title of this podcast. I feel like my content has been getting stale, and I'm not as motivated to take the time to figure out how to improve it. Ever since I got my job as an Esports coordinator I've been very focused (career-wise) on esports as it was making me WAY more money than FGC has ever. I had a fiance and a son to worry about so I felt justified in neglecting my content to pursue a career.
    New Podcast on the way?
I'm finding it's increasingly difficult to talk about FGC related topics with so much going on in the world. In a way, I'm feeling very confined by the title as I have many interests outside of fighting games. I originally started FGC Philosophy as a way to improve my ability to speak. I have accomplished it. In some way, I feel indebted to this podcast. So until I come up with a better podcast, I'm going to work on this one. When that time comes, I'll be sure to let you all know. I'm hoping you will enjoy my future podcast as well!

Thank you all for listening, and as always, I hope you enjoy the show.

  • #62. Understanding Mental Vigilance with Cayke Monster
FGCP 62. Outline: Vigilance, what it is, and why it’s important
I’ve been thinking about this concept of mental vigilance lately. What is it, why does it matter, and how do I do it? My guest and I discuss this at length in this episode of FGC Philosophy. My guest is one of the founding members of Proven Esports. A group of gamers who are starting to make waves in the online esports scene. He's also an educator and an avidTekken7 player, so just the perfect person to talk about this next topic.

Vigilance is a topic that is both obvious and vague at the same time. As I've been trying to become more focused and efficient with my time, I realize that I needed to be more aware of what I'm doing and thinking. This leads me to the topic. In this episode, I explain what vigilance is (in regards to fighting games), why it's important, and how to be better at it.

Thank you all for the continued support.
