    My Main Takeaways
Adversity can be an opportunity to improve if you're open to it.
Overcoming hardship often requires growth and creativity.
Pushing through hard times can help to become stronger both mentally and physically
The concept of Presence and why it's important
Presence helps us recognize our mistakes but allows us to focus on the solution, not the problem.
    Consistency vs Monotony
Without a presence, consistency can feel like monotony, this can lead to laziness and/or arrogance.

Hi all and Happy holidays! I've been under the weather the last few days and even lost my voice shortly after recording this episode.

Show notes are going to be minimal as my brain just can't seem to process much right now.

But the most important thing is thank you all and I hope you have a great holiday season!

  • #87. Project L and what it means for the FGC
    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

The Main Topic in this episode is Project L, Riot's upcoming Fighting Game, and their recent reveal of the game. It's been a crazy few months with the start of recent esports contracts, but I'm powering through it! I'm excited to have Megamaxstar back on the show to talk about a super exciting topic for us. Riot hasn't released any information on Project L in the past 2 years until VERY recently. In this episode, we dive deep into what that could mean.

  • #86. Offline vs Online Tournaments and Console vs PC Tournaments
Episode #86: Offline vs Online Tournaments and Console vs PC Tournaments

PC What's going on guys this topic has been circling around for a while now and I wanted to throw my 2 cents in.  This topic was also recommended by one of the followers of the podcast and I appreciate you reaching out to me and recommending this topic. I've been doing offline and online tournaments for years now and I hadn't really put much thought into some of the questions that were asked. So we're going to get into these topics and continue this discussion that seems to be circulating online right now.vs Console Tournaments
PerformancePC has faster loading times and performance
    Standards of game developers
Setting up a PC TournamentThe better potential of qualityFPS
    Graphics
    Etc.
Higher chance of technical issuesController issues
    Steam deck’s potential
Are people willing to pay an upcharge for PC-only tournaments?

    Online Tournaments vs Offline Tournaments
In what way could online replace the locals?
With this question coming up all the time, what could the community do to get past the debate of Online vs Offline?

Thank you to Big Siph for the recommendation.

  • #86. Toxic Accountability: What is it and how do I overcome it?
    Toxic Accountability
I recently came up with this term to describe something I've observed both in myself, in others, and in my students. I wanted to spend some time introducing this topic so that we can talk more in-depth on this topic in the future.
    What is Toxic Accountability
Toxic Accountability" is having a level of personal (or external) accountability that is detrimental to oneself or those around you.

What can Toxic Accountability look like?
Verbally Berating oneself for not doing good enough, or learning a lesson
Physically hitting oneself for a similar reason
Giving up on something you love because you're not "good enough"

    How do we overcome TA?
Set CLEAR and REALISTIC expectations of oneself
Winning a match or getting a certain rank isn't a real goal.
Set goals that will help you improve as a player.
    Specify areas to improvement
    Neutral
    execution/mechanics
    Strategy
    Visual and/or mental focus
    Vigilance
    Hit-confirming
    Set clear boundaries for Self-care
    No insulting yourself
Only focus on issues and mistakes if you plan to do something about them.
Compliment yourself when you do things right
People often neglect this VERY IMPORTANT part of improving

  • #84. SNK in Bed With the Devil?
Back in April, I uploaded an episode of FGC philosophy with a guest named mine Soleil. In that episode, we discussed SNK's is partial owner, Mohammed Bin Salman(MBS). He's the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia and the defense minister of that same country. In the episode, we talked about our conflicting feelings about SNK working with this known war criminal and how we can go about handling that situation.
Jamal Khashoggi was a journalist who was assassinated in the Saudia Arabian consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Khashoggi has been shown to be critical of Saudia Arabia and its leadership. The people responsible for said murder are supposedly closely connected to MBS. The US and other nations have found MBS responsible for the death of Khashoggi. That story is one of the highest-profile pieces of news that we have on MBS. There have been many other deaths connected to MBS in and around the country of Saudi Arabia. In my opinion, it's important to ask the question, is SNK in bed with the devil?
Many of us have had Politics thrust into our personal lives during this pandemic. I'm not here to tell anyone what to think or do, however, it's important to revisit this topic. Soleil recently reached out to express some concerns. I wanted to share his and my thoughts on the topic.

  • #83.Personal Updates and FGC Drama
This week is mostly about catching up to speed with me and all the craziness going on. Since I work with colleges/universities and other educational programs, the summer has been VERY dry, but now that school is starting up many opportunities have come bouncing back. While I‘m very grateful for the opportunities I‘ve had to make some challenging choices and I‘m currently adjusting to the changes. I can‘t yet announce all of the details of all my endeavors but I‘m very excited for the future.

  • #82. 100 Hours of Guilty Gear: Strive
#82. My first 100 hours of Guilty Gear: Strive

I recently hit 100 hours of playing Guilty Gear: Strive and as such, I thought it was a great time to reflect on my experience. I give my review but I also share a general idea of what I’ve learned from playing Strive.
    My thoughts on Strive
Now that the "new car sheen" is wearing off, I can honestly say I still enjoy the game. I love the gameplay and how I'm able to express myself within this game. I have a character I truly enjoy and that, I believe is a huge part of the allure of this game. There are several other characters I think I would enjoy playing, but Nagoriyuki is by far one of the coolest fighting game characters ever to me. As such, I had to prioritize learning him.
How good am I at Guilty Gear: Strive?
That's a hard question to answer. I've managed to get to the celestial floor during the first "season" and I don't think I'll have much trouble getting back up there. I've been busier lately so I haven't had to get much time to play lately as when it first came out. Even still I'm able to hold my own around the KZOO FGC and surrounding areas. I still have much to learn but I feel I have a good mindset when approaching this game.

What's been my process for learning the game?
So I'm still developing how to articulate this one. On one side it's very simple, but it's only simple assuming you put in the work to develop certain skills. There are so many areas to talk about, but I did my best to focus on a small group.
    Execution
    Hit-confirms
    Tool usage
    Mix-up
    Situational awareness
These areas I was sure to focus on and repeat until I mastered them. Please note, when I say "mastered" I mean you are able to perform this task/skill/technique/etc. with minimal mental effort, however long that takes. When I do I pick something new to work on, rinse repeat. I've since added more to that list, but everything else tends to fit one of these categories in some form, just a more advanced version of it.

    Getting into the "Zone"
Something I made sure to do, was not allow myself to be too distracted when playing this game. When I'm in a match with friends, I often deafen myself to make sure that I'm locked into what I'm doing. A big part of playing consistently is having consistent focus, which means I need to train myself to stay disciplined in my vigilance. From my previous experience, my vigilance is something I'm always trying to improve. That means I had to sit there and internally or externally say to "Pay attention", "Look for the burst", or other things that will help me get the read on my opponent, and/or get the upper hand. Doing so allows me to catch on to what my opponent is doing faster and faster. I still get bodied by better players, but when I do I am usually enjoying the experience because I know that I can learn from these games. I also record my matches regularly, so that allows me to quickly review a match while it's fresh, or wait till I'm less salty!

Re-Learning to enjoy the learning process Letting go of expectations
Having a fighting game I truly enjoy has allowed me to embrace the process of learning a fighting game from zero. It's a humbling experience, but also a very novel one. There's so much new stuff to take attention to. I decided early on, I wouldn't play this game to compete, I would play it to improve and master it. I enjoy the mastery, the process of improving. In the early days of competing, somewhere along the line, I convinced myself it was about winning. Since that time I've been improving my outlook on fighting games to something more productive. That desire to improve my mindset improved as my time was reduced with the birth of my son Link. Now that my time is more limited I need to use my time more wisely. As such I think this game gave me the chance to do just that. I do intend to compete seriously in this game, but when I do I want to go in with the ability to win. I'm not quite there yet, and I have access to strong players fr

  • #81. Truth and SYN|Undrscore87 CPT Midwest, Goals, Tier list and more
FGCP 81 CPT Midwest w/ Syn | Undrscore87 and Truth
I believe it's important to focus more on the journey rather than the destination. I believe it's more important to get fixated on the process, not fixated on the end goal. Goals are our compasses but they do not help us deal with the obstacles that are directly in our path to that goal.
This conversation is in part focused on understanding the learning process of others, setting attainable goals, and avoiding or reducing the time you plateau. You know I talk a lot about the growth mindset and the fixed mindset and people who continually improve have a growth mindset at least to some degree. My hope is that all of us can have a conversation here not to compare ourselves to others but compare ourselves to ourselves.
Right now we have two midwest CPT entrants, two Cammy players that are on their own personal journeys. We get to have a conversation, almost as a timestamp on their Journeys. We’re going to see where they are now, where they want to go, and hopefully, and how they plan to do it. I also hope this conversation helps to Spark ideas in you as a guest to move forward in your competitive career. I asked you guys to challenge yourself to dig deep and think about some of these questions not just for others, but for yourselves. Try to think about things from the perspective of someone who’s newer to SFV or has plateaued. Oftentimes when we articulate things that we don't normally articulate we start to think about them in a very different way because we're using a different part of my brain.
My hope is that we can talk about some of the things that are more instinctual to you guys, to help you understand how you think about things you may not consciously do anymore because you’ve trained it to be muscle memory or something along those lines.
     Thanks,

  • #80. Stream Execerpts 1: Character Guild, Mindset, Resiliance
I recently did a live stream and while playing Guilty Gear: Strive, I had a conversation with some of the people in chat. That inspired me to take that stream and cut up the conversation. In this conversation we touch on several topics, one of which, being guilt from playing a character that the FGC widely may consider over-powered, annoying, etc. The concept of feeling discouraged from playing a character because your peers don‘t approve of that character.
