VIII. Liturgical calendar/ year, which is derived from the life of Christ, sets the tone of the Catholic home
This is a common element in Catholic homes. The awareness of the liturgical year, complete with feast days, solemnities, colors, and prayers. Holy Spirit Novena, the granddaddy of them all, starts from Ascension to Pentecost and is a direct command of the Risen Lord.
Traditions change, ebb and flow, good to know actual practices people having been doing for 100, 2000 years. Profoundly comfort. Doing of them is good. Brings truth and beauty, anchoring, reason to come home. Modify without destroying it.
>> Marian element Do whatever He tells you. She pondered these things in her heart. Stood at the foot of the Cross. Received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost the birth of the Church. Her Assumption, Coronation, and multitude of apparitions through the years highlights her essential role in the Catholic home.
>> Maundy Thursday, we have a modified Seder meal. It has catechized both my children and visitors through the years. Listening to the readings (tie into the liturgy) never are heard the same way again. Mary Reed Newland
>> Library this is very helpful.
The expressions vary and are specific to the locale.
Analogy to a prism, white light enters a prism, and different colors of light are expressed. Though we know light is more than these colors seen, it is at least these wavelengths
Similarly, when we say God is love, i.e. John, love too has many facets. But if we think of the mind of Paul, as a prism, to see the components of God and the actions of Christ we can say God has at least these expressions and is the source of them.
The Spectrum of Love has 9 ingredients 1 Cor 13[1]
Patience, kindness, generosity, humility, courtesy, unselfishness, good temper, guilelessness, sincerity these make up the Supreme Good, the love of God, and the portrait of Christ. Ethos of the home.
Each virtue is worthy of its own consideration, taken together it does seem daunting but our Lord bids us to follow Him. Our Lady says do whatever he tells you. The Love of the Father, example of Jesus, indwelling of the Holy Spirit permits us to be so daring.
Sincerity is a blessing, effort to do good. Who observes us like we do an infant, angels and saints. Doing our good heavenly personages cheering us on to greater goodness. Culmination of hope of us being with them. Train the child to be in communion with them.
Traditions are beautiful in 20 years. Touch their hearts, great privilege see them establish their own homes. Passage of goodness from generation to generation.
[XI. Addendum
Mat 7:21, 24-27
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who (home) on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.
Goal of a Catholic Home is to foster the family members to get to heaven (personal sanctification) and to bring as many people as possible with them (charity to neighbor). The behaviors, décor, to a greater or lesser extent flow from Christ.]

Don’t swallow camel whole, Rome not built in a day. Takes a long time authentic liturgical. Need some, children need grounding. Every profession a practicum taught to do job well
Motherhood soundly disparaged during our younger years. We didn’t see the good practice of motherhood. Intense lovers and caretakers of the home.
Make a house a home. Run to and run from.
Positive elements. Incense of motherhood is cinnamon. A home have an aroma, Byzantine church, old Church one of beeswax
Smells anchor them to their memories. Find something that speaks to your heart, and shared.
Ex/ read Bible in the Year, limitations, don’t let enemy be the enemy of the good.
VIII. Contrast to other types of homes
A Catholic home should look and feel different from non-Catholic homes. It should smell and sound different. Sometimes imperceptibly. What is being said and viewed is a marked difference. The dress and concern/ charity for others.
Ex/ England (not Catholic, empty no one home) vs France ( Catholic someone is always home). Eucharist always present in the Church and Christian. Mother be greeted, a living and breathing house. Not latch key kids.
Eucharist source & summit, heart beating within the home. Challenging statement.

Eucharist source and summit (Catechism of Catholic Church)
1324 The Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life.”134 “The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.”135
1325 “The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God’s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit.”136
1326 Finally, by the Eucharistic celebration we already unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and anticipate eternal life, when God will be all in all.137
1327 In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith: “Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking.”138
We now have the fundamental ethos of what a Catholic home. These beliefs inform the practices and tenor of the home. The rules and behaviors need the back stop of right belief to have right practice.
Lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi (Latin: “the law of what is prayed [is] what is believed [is] the law of what is lived“)
VII. Certain behaviors are encouraged, others forbidden. Just as in public worship. All behaviors, actions, speech have an echo of the source and summit of the Christian life
How pray, what believe, to the end of living well. Younger generation hungry for authentic liturgical life. Body of knowledge and put into practice correctly, i.e. lawyers, judges, politicians. If they don’t fraud, knowledge presumed correct practice.
First principles, Church Fathers, Judaism, Meagher, Fortescue, refreshed helps keep our wits. Catholic home leaven, salt, light.
Grave injustice have a body of knowledge of how to use. JC People perish lack of knowledge. Know something is easy, to do it is hard.
Requires constant effort, constant strengthen of the will. Given a pattern to follow.
Peter gives what is given to him, get up and walk.
Ex/ Ember Days. Easy way to bring the liturgy to the home. Never taught.

The early Christians at a very great cost, would gather on the Lord’s day, the 8th day, Sunday for public worship. Charges of being a Christian carried significant risk. Torture was considered a good method of extracting information. If home liturgy was sufficient, it would have been safer for all to remain hidden at home. But such was not the case. (Justin Martyr gives the earlies complete account of the liturgy[1]
Home-
Noun (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition)
Catholic- This term (from Greek katholikos meaning universal or according to the whole) was first used by Ignatius of Antioch early second century AD) it describes the unity of local churches under their local bishops. Catholic is also one of the four marks of the Church in the Nicene Creed (one, holy, catholic, and apostolic). Catholic come to be associated with a particular way of being Christian that emphasizes the doctrines and practices of the early Church and the celebration of the sacraments.[2] CCC #750
Domestic church Just as the early Christians held their religious services in house churches, so to the Christian home was described by Vatican II as a domestic church, where parents teach their children Christian virtues by living the Gospel message on a daily basis.[3] CCC #1655-1658
Words & deeds daily
Ex/ body of knowledge and defined praxis, practicum, practice. Body of knowledge of surgery, dentistry, and subsequent correct practices.
Appropriate to any group, given control particular knowledge and have a proper way of practice.
JC gave us knowledge and practice.
Ex/ We are Beatty’s talk way of doing things. Small way. Liturgical living body of knowledge and in practice and a good way to use that knowledge
Knowledge vs wisdom. Need this in our own homes. Is body of knowledge, put in practice, how do we model. To the smallest child.

One of the charges Yahweh will level against the people is they did not fulfill the Sinai Covenant, and the penalty is exile and servitude. A substantial portion of the Sinai Covenant is the public worship of the Lord. It is very specific and precise. Moses writing in Leviticus details the requirements. The prophets are sent to the people of God to worship Him in Spirit (from the heart) and Truth (by the letter of the law). Both/and. Fr. Meagher gives an excellent summary of the OT prescriptions, use, up to the time of Christ.
Text out of context, pray to God in your own room in silence. Ignore 2000 yrs of practice. God is capable of both/and except for sin. And yet God can bring good out of that and His W shall be accomplished.
Courageous public liturgy keeps the persecutions at bay. Need a true restoration of the home, to Liturgy in the public. Both fundamental to restoration of true, good, beauty.
It is imperative to have a sense of the OT liturgy, because that is the pedagogy of God. God prepares His People very carefully. He is not a God of surprises in regard to his honor. The Apostles and St. Paul, along with the Church fathers from the first centuries would have modeled their liturgy after the OT though adapted to a Christian message.
Some theologians, propose that Christ during His 40 days after the Ascension, directly taught the apostles how He wanted the liturgy to be conducted, and that is reason of way in the earliest years the various public expressions of worship have several similarities.
Consider the opinion of Klaus Gamber, Modern Rite pg 77[1]
“The fundamental acts of worship of the early Church- the celebration of the eucharist, the rites of the sacraments, prayer in common, and the liturgical sermon- all go back to the express command of Jesus or are at least based on his example and commendation. Jesus, however, did not originate these liturgical acts, but took them over from the practice of late Judaism. The primitive Church continued this policy; to a limited extent it created it of its own accord forms of worship which had not already been laid down by Jesus; but to a much greater extent it fashioned its worship according to the liturgical customs of Judaism. In Gentile congregations, borrowings would have been made increasingly from the religious practices of the Graeco-Roman world.”
Truth human person construction of right spaces of construction for worship. Tell when a place is holy. Innately instinctive to the human person. Man is called to worship God in a particular manner irrespective of a generation. The longing of the soul.
Ex/ See largest structures, sports arenas, loveliness, arrangement of motion, people, how we sit, a type of choir, one person verse, response, one side for cheer, another side for the team. There are parallels see it if one is a strong student of the liturgy.
Man by nature is a religious animal, borrowing from Aristotle.

JPII domestic church. Liturgy of the Church informs the domestic church.
Liturgy; From the Greek laos, meaning people and ergon meaning work, in general, refers to public service. In the Christian tradition (Christ lens) tradition, it is the participation of the people of God in the redemptive work of God through the public worship of the Church. Sometimes the word for ‘liturgy” is used as a synonym for the Mass. (CCC# 1069-1070)[1]
Liturgy is not about us but about God.[2]
Worship- The Olde English for ‘worship of honor” refers to the adoration and honor given to God. Worship may be: (1) private, when an individual personally chooses a time and place to adore God; or (2) public, when the liturgy and sacraments are celebrated by a group of people (CCC# 2096)[3]
>public/ private, worship/ liturgy
III. Contrast to other types of liturgies, non-Christian
There is a universal need of people to gather publicly for a spiritual, transcendental purpose. Some theologians[4] have considered the gathering around sports events as a type of worship. The forms, rules, dress, public participation, symbols, language varies according to the mode of liturgy.
Correlation, interesting, grandson baptized, not Christan at all came to baptism, I’m not religious, if I go to Church, it would be the Catholic Mass, because of the aspects of sports teams
Religious, want external vestiges but lack faith. See sports cultural habituated, a Band of Brothers. Ex/ Green Bay Packers immediate enjoyment, bon ami, comradery from communal gathering. Lacking is supernatural faith, hope, charity. Parroted in a good way.
Use positive aspects for the greater public good.

Christ reveals man to himself. This is particularly true for both the liturgy and a Catholic home. I have past shows with Fr. Kloster where we discuss the Mass of Peter and the liturgy of the first few centuries. How Christ Said the First Mass by Fr. Meagher and The Mass by Fr. Adrian Fortescue are good books with which to start. I shall borrow some conclusions from the discussion and suggest if more in depth discussion is desired, watch those series of discussions.
The Liturgy after being barred from the Temple, had its first locations in Christian homes. Quickly it would move out to larger and better spaces for crowds with dedicated place but in the beginning the Liturgy and the Catholic Home were united.
Liturgy, the work of the priest in the Temple. Catholic/Christian baptism uniquely fit for the work for our Lord.
Distinction of liturgical priest, and those priest of the home. But those baptized have the call of priesthood in the home. Sent into the home, especially the mothers.
Go to Church to be fed, come home and feed those entrusted to us.

Centuries covered and its trace ability. Incredible.
In the history of ancient Israel there was growing expectation of one particular messiah among many people that he was the one that God had spoken of this new Davidic king who would come. It is that fulfillment we find in JC. JC is the anointed king to rule over His people in justice to save them from sin and the powers of evil and lead us to everlasting life. JC is THE Christ. All of us have a small anointing in JC because we are baptized in Him and Confirmed anointed in fact with the oil Chrism in the name of God. We are marked with God’s blessing for the task of being His people and His witnesses in the world
XII. Exhortation restatement of thesis statement
Isaiah in rich and evocative language points ahead to JC by their words
JC is The Good Shepherd: God and the New David in One
Saw in all three of the major prophets the issue of shepherdsBad shepherds, priest, kings, other leaders, who were leading the people astray, abusing the people, not caring for them, living off the fat of the flock instead of nourishing the flock so they could mature & grow
Not loving the flock but using them
God consistently says He will be their shepherd, God will care for the least of them, God will bring back the strays, goes to Capernaum, bring back lost tribes of Israel
Prophecies of the New Davidic King, the Messiah, would be the shepherd, he would lead them, he would rule over them in righteousness,
Completely strict, reading this and wondering what could be prophesized, might have tension, will it be God or the human Davidic descended from David.
By the miracle and mystery of the Incarnation it’s both. Hypostatic union. Divine Person God- Man.
Jn 10 a hireling, JC says, set over the people/ flock but not actually the hireling’s, run away save their own hide, care for the sheep for another reward, not the flock itself. Even good ones
JC says I’m not going anywhere, Good Shepherd lays down life for the sheep.
>>God & The New David in Person in a single Divine Person
Beautiful, miracle & mystery of Incarnation. Entire life and ministry of JC ongoing, invited to participate in. Never want to forget wonder & awe, welcomed as a son, through covenant. Baptism, oath, God’s blessing, become His son & daughter by adoption. Great heart.
Beatitudes, self portrait of JC. They should be our identity as well.

Return and the King
God will discipline and judge all evil
Immanuel the “sign” (Isa 7:14)
New Davidic King, new creation (Isa 9,11)
The highway back to God- New Exodus (Isa 35)
A heavenly feast and the defeat of death (Isa 25)
XII. 4 Sense of Scripture, highlight the Christological sense
How does prophesy work? What about fulfillments? The New Exodus or Immanuel?
As Christians, look at prophecy looking backwards from vantage point of Christ. St. Paul says all of the promises of God are Yes in Him, in Christ.
2 Cor 1:20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
Looking back from Christ we always see the Christ is the ultimate and most perfect fulfillment of all of God’s promises and oracles.
But if we start off from the time of the prophet and his audience, we see there is more than one fulfillment, usually partial fulfillment at the beginning
>>Thinking about the New Exodus, Jesus is our new Passover Lamb the NT says. In Him our exodus is perfect because not just leads His people from one geographical location to another. But leads us out of sin & through our wilderness and pilgrimage in this life to our perfect & eternal home in heaven with Him.
This is the truest and greatest fulfillment that promise of the new Exodus to save God’s people.
And yet, if there isn’t a little fulfillment of before with people actually geographically return from their exile and rebuild the Temple then all of the places in the OT where it says God fulfilled His promise to bring us back
We want to say yes to both. Yes to first partial fulfillment then yes in a big way in to the second.
This will orient us to reading prophecy and seeing double fulfillments as we move along in the rest of the prophets. Especially in our next video in Isaiah look at this promises of the suffering servant and return of (God?) To Zion.
All promises find Yes in God. Longing for His return. Partial fulfillment, waiting, suffering God is with us in midst of our longing for Him to come back.
XIII. Suffering Servant innocent but suffers penalty with/for the people, partial fulfillment with prophets or other figures King Hezekiah
The Suffering Servant
Isaiah 49-50
The “Servant” is a light to Israel and to the nations, anointed by God’s Spirit
He entrusts his right to God, though beaten by enemies and mocked by friends
He embodies the people and suffers with him, though he is innocent
Isaiah 52-53
The Servant’s suffering, though none understood it, is an acceptable offering to God for the people
The innocent Servant will be victorious on the other side of death and share the spoils with others
What is a messiah? The Bible itself says Cyrus is a messiah, does this undermine our confidence in Jesus? No, it doesn’t undermine our confidence in Jesus.
Messiah= anointed Greek word, chrió: to anoint, Christos Christ, someone anointed with oil in the Name of God. Lots of them in SS. All of the kings are anointed in Israel and Judah. Priests are anointed. Prophets are anointed.
People are anointed for a particular task. To say someone is a messiah does NOT imply divinity. Usually, they are the king or anointed as priest or for a particular task for God.
Cyrus is NOT THE MESSIAH in the sense he is the single great Savior of God or that he is the Lord. He has a particular job to do God is giving him even though Cyrus does not know God. Kings are not anointed to be priests; they are anointed to be kings and do that job. Prophets just anointed to that job, preach.
We are marked with God’s blessing for the task of being His people and His witnesses in the world.
Invitation to be suffering servants ourselves. Following the steps of the Master.

VIII. 5 Love Languages Gary Chapman[1]
KEY POINTS
Time, self-reflection, planning, how does God choose gift? To Him most precious, and most unique.
Important element is to know recipient. Our Lord knows with a depth, knew exactly what we need. He knew every one of us need to be saved personally, only His Begotten Son could be this gift.
Effective gift giver know and love recipient. Authentic gift, no love no gift. Individual gift, given in love piece of the heart. Some of us don’t want to enter into this.
Fear of rejection, vulnerability of the gift giver. Cannot confirmed the person received in the spirit given.
Giving gift good feeling, it can, but not always have to.
Detachment in giving the gift, expectation indicative.
Reciprocity included in gift giving, element lost the measure. How do we restore the measure more like God the Father in giving gifts.
Know the person what they love and need, joy. Best of your means fulfill with the ability. Once give the gift, no control of how it is used or enjoyed. Given freely with no strings. Absolute autonomy. Invest heart but not ego in gift giving.
