Legendary Canadian game-show host Alex Trebek has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer but said in a YouTube video that he plans to keep fighting and keep working. The 78 year old was born in Sudbury and moved to the US in 1984 to host "Jeopardy. When making the announcement Trebek joked that he has to survive, because he's got three more years left on his Jeopardy contract.

Premier Doug Ford's controversial push to appoint his friend Toronto Police Superintendent Ron Taverner as OPP Commissioner has been quashed by Taverner himself.

Ron Taverner's surprise decision was revealed last night amid a growing outcry over accusations of political interference. An unnamed senior government official as saying both Ron Taverner and Premier Ford shared the same concerns that the appointment was being overly politicized and its in the best interests of front line officers for Taverner to withdraw. NDP deputy leader Sara Singh praised Taverner for making what she calls the right decision, but says a public inquiry is still needed to understand how Taverner was able to be appointed in the first place. Taverner has been in limbo since requesting in December that his appointment be put on hold until the ethics investigation is completed.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered a conciliatory tone this morning in addressing what he says was an erosion of trust over the SNC Lavalin case But, when asked if he's apologizing for what happened Trudeau did reiterate that he wishes then-attorney general Jody Wilson Raybould had come to him if she had been feeling inappropriate pressure from staff in his office to back off on the criminal trial against SNC Lavalin. Trudeau was asked if he regrets not leaving Wilson Raybould as the Justice Minister rather than shuffling her out of the role. Trudeau also invoked the memory of his late father in expressing the importance of the justice file recalling that Pierre Elliot Trudeau was Justice Minister before he was Prime Minister.

Wilson-Raybould testified that Butts was among a group in the PMO who tried to pressure her into going easier on the Montreal engineering giant.

At the same time Justin Trudeau is said to be weighing whether to deliver an expression of contrition or a more detailed statement on the SNC Lavalin controversy in a bid to contain a political crisis that has already cost him two cabinet ministers and his top aide.

An OPP Deputy Commissioner with concerns about a friend of the premier's being appointed the province's top cop has been fired. Deputy OPP Commissioner Brad Blair says his termination is retribution for his legal battle over the appointment of a long-time Ford family friend Ron Taverner as top provincial police officer.

Blair has asked the courts to force the provincial ombudsman to investigate Taverner’s hiring.

In newly filed court documents Blair alleges that his firing is an attempt to, ''muzzle'' him.

The government has denied any political interference in Blair's t. Sylvia Jones, the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, says the decision was made by the public service commission.

NDP Leader Andrea Howarth's motion calling for a public inquiry into the matter was defeated.
