Not everyone is happy with changes affecting Toronto transit riders this New Year.

After almost 40 years, the Metro pass is being discontinued and replaced with new Presto cards. But, there are still some glitches with the Presto system and commuters are taking to social media complaining that the Presto system is difficult to figure out. The Canadians Civil Liberties Association is raising privacy concerns over Presto because it can track travel history. Ontario regulations ban random carding by police; however, Justice Michael Tulloch, who was hired by Ontario’s previous Liberal government to assess the effectiveness of new regulations meant to limit carding in light of its impact on racialized groups, said the practice as a whole should be sharply curtailed. “There is little to no evidence that a random, unfocused collection of identifying information has benefits that outweigh the social cost of the practice,” Tulloch wrote in his 310-page report. Libby and her guests, lawyer Knia Singh and security expert Ross McClean discuss the Tulloch report, the usefulness carding, and the practice’s potential downsides.
