Greetings Cinema Lovers, Today, I'd like to do a brief character analysis, and for a fan of anime, I'm sure you are all familiar with Cowboy Bebop. As someone who has come to love this anime with each new viewing, it's hard for me to find flaw within the show. Sure, it doesn't necessarily have plot due to its episodic story structure. But one thing Shinchiro Watanabe's masterpiece has never denied us fans is a setting with very rich and vibrant characters. When it comes to the cast of The Bebop, whether we look at Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine, Jet Black, or Radical Edward, there's never a shortage of colorful characters that ooze excitement. However, the character I'm going to talk about today is one I think has been overshadowed and left unanalyzed in so many ways in which his existence speaks about the major theme of the show. The character I'm referring to is none other than Vicious, or a some critics have referred to him as, The Dark Spike. Vicious is a psychotic mob boss who works for the Red Dragon syndicate, the same space Mafia Spike was a part of prior to the events of the series. He is the closest thing the show has to an antagonist, despite having being on only five episodes of the series, and yet, I always found his dark and highly demonic persona both fascinating as well as a great contrast to Spike, who although not the embodiment of optimism, surely has a more stable means of functioning in life. Vicious is, well, you guessed it, Vicious in that unlike spike, he is cold, sociopathic, nihilistic, and drenched with a darkness that oozes out of him through just the simple bits of dialogue he utters throughout the show. Aside from being well-drawn, he also serves as the perfect polar opposite to Spike in that both men have seen a fair share of the evil of humanity, but both walked different paths as a result of the choices they made. Well, that's enough babbling from me. I hope you all enjoy this analysis of a character I feel despite having a short time on the series, is still highly underrated in not only his conception, but also just the sheer volume of effectiveness his existence works to make Spike Spiegel's character that much more relevant to the tragic theme of whether or not we can truly walk away from our past and move forward with our lives.
