  • Stefan Bate on Why Treatment Isn’t Recovery

In this episode of Finding New Waters, B. Reeves sits down with Stefan Bate, partner and co-CEO of Jaywalker Lodge in Carbondale, Colorado, for a powerful conversation about addiction, surrender, treatment, community, and what long-term recovery actually looks like.

Stefan shares his own journey from being labeled a “chronic relapsor” and “treatment resistant alcoholic” after multiple treatment attempts to eventually finding lasting recovery at Jaywalker Lodge. He explains why he could get an “A in treatment” but still had no idea how to live in recovery — and why the four-month Jaywalker model gave him something traditional 28-day treatment had not: time to actually practice living sober in the real world.

The conversation explores one of Stefan’s strongest beliefs: “you get sober in treatment, but you find recovery in community.” Stefan explains why treatment alone is not enough, why consequence-based motivation eventually burns out, and why joy, relationships, purpose, connection, and a meaningful life are not side effects of recovery — “they are the medicine.”

Stefan also discusses surrender, hopelessness, why intelligent and successful people often try to outthink addiction, the pressure men feel to immediately rebuild their careers after treatment, and why slowing down can actually create a stronger foundation for lifelong recovery.

The episode closes with the newly launched Jaywalker Foundation and its mission to create greater access to extended recovery care for people who need programs like Jaywalker but do not have the financial resources to afford them.

Celebrating an incredible 42 years of continuous sobriety on the exact day of this recording, Terry shares his riveting journey from a passionate left-handed college pitching prospect in Chicago to crashing and burning on a baseball road trip in Joplin, Missouri. Terry details what it was like maintaining a 12-step program while scouting in Colombia during the turbulent Pablo Escobar era, and how he eventually merged his two passions to help pro athletes struggling with addiction. Now serving as the Director of Strategic Alliances for Banyan Treatment Centers, Terry discusses Banyan's massive expansion to 19+ programs across 9 states, their mission to accept state Medicaid and HMOs, and why a long-term structured continuum of care is vital for true neurological healing.
