  • Fintech Recap: Overdraft, Fintech IPOs, and SoFi's Latest Acquisition

    Fintech Recap is back.

This month, Jason Mikula of Fintech Business Weekly and I break down:

    * Citi’s decision to stop charging overdraft and NSF fees.

    * Chime’s (reported) decision to delay its IPO.

    * SoFi’s decision to acquire core banking provider Technisys.

    * Crypto companies advertising blitz in Super Bowl LVI.

And on a more serious and important note, Jason and I also spent a few minutes at the top of the episode talking about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. If you are looking to learn more about the conflict and ways that you can help, I highly recommend starting with this piece written by Packy McCormick. If you are looking to understand how the conflict is impacting Ukrainian fintech companies, Nicole Casperson has done some excellent reporting that you should read. And if you’re curious to learn more about the mechanics of economic sanctions, take a look at Simon Taylor’s latest newsletter.

  • Fintech Recap: Overdraft Fees, N26, & Facebook

Welcome to another episode of Fintech Recap, a monthly podcast where Jason Mikula of Fintech Business Weekly and I try to figure out what happened in the worlds of banking, fintech, and crypto and what it all means.

We were thrilled to be joined for this episode by Simon Taylor, Co-founder of 11:FS and publisher of the Fintech 🧠 Food newsletter.

We didn’t plan it this way, but the theme of this month’s episode turned out to be: Calling It Quits. Jason, Simon, and I discussed:

    * Capital One’s decision to eliminate overdraft fees.

    * N26’s decision to exit the U.S. market.

    * David Marcus’s decision to leave Facebook/Meta.

We also spent a few minutes at the end of the episode discussing El Salvador’s “Volcano Bonds” because, well, we couldn’t not.

    Enjoy!

  • Introducing: the Fintech Recap podcast
    Hey all, it’s Jason.

Exciting news — Fintech Business Weekly now includes a podcast, Fintech Recap.

The purpose of the podcast is, as you might have guessed from the name, to recap the most interesting news, trends, and ideas in fintech on a regular basis.

The best part of the podcast is that I get to collaborate on it with one of my favorite people in fintech — Alex Johnson, the creator of the Fintech Takes newsletter (which you should definitely be subscribed to).

In this inaugural episode, recorded live at Money20/20, Alex and I break down the fintech trends that everyone was talking about at the show, including crypto (obviously), the intersection of payments, commerce, and social media, and the increasingly obsessive focus on fintech infrastructure.

    A couple housekeeping notes:

For now, subscribers to Fintech Takes and Fintech Business weekly will get new podcast episodes delivered straight to their email inboxes. However, this podcast will also be syndicated to your favorite podcast players (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, etc.) if you prefer to subscribe and listen there!

Alex and I are podcast novices, who will be learning as we go! Feedback, suggestions, ideas, and constructive critiques are welcome and encouraged. Hit us up on social or reply to our emails.

As I realize many of you may subscribe to both of our newsletters, complete this one-question survey to help me determine if you’d prefer to continue automatically receiving the podcast as part of your Fintech Business Weekly subscription, or if you’d prefer it to be a separate, optional subscription (to help you avoid getting two copies of it):

We hope you enjoy episode #1!
