  • FDNH 41: Pushing yourself harder often isn't the answer to success

If your riding at the moment feels like pushing shit up hill in a leaky wheelbarrow chances are you are getting frustrated, pushing yourself harder, possibly close to burn out, wondering if you are every going to be good enough.

In this episode I share with you the work I do with my students when they come to me feeling stuck and why pushing harder will only get you more stuck down the track. This is also the work I do with my beginner and intermediate students that prevents them from getting stuck where most riders get stuck and has them smashing road blocks without even knowing most people get stuck and frustrated at these points.

  • FDNH 40: Troubleshooting problem behaviours with Jane from Evoke Aromatics

Join us as we talk to Jane about working with different practitioners and modalities to support and correct problem behaviours and optimise athletic potential. Jane's particular love is essential oils for emotional support that help us do our emotional self regulation, resilience and agility work. I share with you how Jane has helped us with a feisty little mare that is really good at biting, girthy and does occassionally take the bolt and buck for fun.

You can find Jane at Evoke Aromatics.

  • FDNH 39: 5 tips for showing up for your horse as a better leader

We talk a lot at Equestrian Movement as showing up as a leader worth following for our horses. In this podcast I go into detail of 5 things we accidentally do or unconsciously do with our horses that results in them losing faith in our leadership skills and how we can prove our worth and our value to them as someone they can trust to follow.

We love hearing from you!! So if you have found yourself in a situation where you broke your horses trust we would love to hear your story.

If you are keen as a bean for the process of strategically building your horses trust and confidence in you as well as the clarity of aids and quality of balance in the saddle, check out our membership: Riding for soundness

  • Episode 38: How to ride your horse on the bit

In this episode I talk about what the purpose of riding the horse "on the bit" is, (spoiler alert its not just to win pretty ribbons) and why I'm not a fan of side reins, chambons and other artificial aids to create it.

This podcast comes with a video training, you can watch it here, so that you have a visual to go with these concepts. Because, I get it!!! Just listening to this words can be super confusing!!! So make sure you watch this video to get a visual for hollow, on the forehand, engagement, seeking contact, behind the bit, flexing away at the third vertebrae etc.

If you're listening to this and your thinking:
    - I don't know how to strategically combine my exercises for topline development.

    - I thought all I had to do is tuck my horses nose in and now I'm realising why I'm stuck in my training

    - I don't know how to work with soft hands my horse trusts, seeks and looks to for guidance.

Check out our online membership that lays the whole process out for you from our holistic horsemanship approach where we include emotional agility and self regulation, cue training and how to complement our exercises for soundness and impulsion. Check the membership out here.

  • FDNH 37: What even is a half halt!?!?!

Do you keep hearing the term half halt and feel like that is beyond anything you can begin to understand? That half halts are the realm of wizardy and the secrets are kept safe by the masters of classical dressage?

In this training I'm going to talk about:

    - why the half halt is so complex and confusing

    - why there seems to be so many different explanations, interpretations and ways of riding it
    - how to identify the best way you can ride it!

  • FDNH 35: Combination reinforcement and creating light and willing partnerships through connection and compassion

"My training is for the horse, not for me. By giving them that input into their training you can take it in the direction they need and shape them into the most confident, strong and athletic version of themselves."

I absolutely loved this conversation with Ella at Ella McBain horsemanship coaching. I think she is one of my new favourite people. Join us as we talk all things horse training and what it takes to overcome being a beginner in the industry.

  • FDNH 34: Why does my horse keep biting me!?!?! And other problem behaviours: The Equestrian Movement Philosophy

Join us in todays episode as we talk about a question that came up in our facebook group The Stronger Bond Community. One of our members recently posted a video of her horse showing some problematic behaviours that were becoming a bit scary!! In this podcast we are going to break down how we trouble shoot issues with our horses so hopefully you have more tools up your sleeve then punishment and just pushing them through it.

  • FDNH 32: Breaking through rider anxiety with Sarah Gallagher

Check out this podcast as Sarah goes into detail critical make or break moments she has had in her riding career so far. As an amateur rider starting her riding career as an adult with a back injury, it hasn't been all smooth sailing. The fear of getting hurt (considering she managed to put herself on crutches just by sneezing) comes up any time Sarah pushes her comfort zone to tackle the next challenge. Listen as Sarah discusses the skills she has developed to be a leader worth following to all the different horses and breeds she works with as well as what it takes to crush rider anxiety that gets in the road of kicking goals.

About First Do No Harm

From the publisher's feed

#FDNHPodcast is an in depth discussion with equestrian trainers and professionals dedicated to making horse training happen for the horse not to the horse. We discuss how to reduce harm in our horses training environment and how to support our horses mental, emotional and physical well being so that we have horses that enjoy learning and ask to be ridden.
