Former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke says South Africa needs to renew debate the transformation agenda, and has urged citizens to resist being lazy in coming up with solutions to find common ground. Speaking during a graduation ceremony to honour him and singer Yvonne Chakachaka, he said South Africa has made progress in certain sectors but that more needs to be done to ensure harmony in the country. The pair were conferred with doctorate degrees by Rhodes University for their various contributions through their work and philanthropic efforts. Police in Kwazulu Natal have launched a manhunt following an attack at a mosque in Verulam, north of Durban. One person has been killed and two critically wounded. According to reports, three Egyptian Nationals stormed into the mosque, attacked people with knives and set it alight. Former Western Cape Police Commissioner will spend the next six years in prison. Arno Lamoer and three co-accused, two of whom are also former high-ranking police officials, were sentenced to direct imprisonment in the Cape Town High Court yesterday. Tow truck company owner, Saleem Dawjee, was given an effective six years in jail. Police brigadiers; Darius van Der Ross received a two-year jail term and Colin Govender got four years. Some companies are now considering retrenching workers as the crippling bus strike has entered its fourth week. The CCMA and the Bargaining Council have proposed an eight-point-seven-five percent salary increase for the first year and eight-point-two-five per cent for the second year. However the unions are now demanding nine percent for this year and eight percent for next year. The North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has now been asked to take leave, after the Provincial Executive Committee yesterday refused to accept his resignation as Premier. Mahumapelo has appointed Finance MEC Wendy Nelson to act in his position, as he takes leave of absence. Nelson will act until the ANC's national leadership decides his fate. The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union, NEHAWU says it is going ahead with its planned mass action next week in the North West province. A faction opposed to the embattled North-West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has vowed to intensify efforts to unseat him. This follows an about-turn by Mahumapelo who reneged on his pledge to resign from high office. The Premier's fate and the fragile security situation in the North-West was subject of cabinet discussions in Cape Town. Opposition parties in the Free State say they are disappointed with provincial cabinet reshuffle. Premier Sisi Ntombela made one change but retained previous MECs. Some have been moved to other portfolios. The newcomer Montsheng Tsiu, previously with labour union Nehawu is occupying the troubled health department previously held by Butana Khomphela who has been moved to Social Development.
