First Time Lord

I remember very clearly the first time that I watched as the ninth Doctor looked on to a chained and diminished Dalek and recoiled back in fear. I realized after that episode and the coinciding podcast that Daleks were a severe threat. Some weeks after the episode, I had a nightmare where I woke up after hearing the Dalek battle cry, “Exterminate!” I’ve seen much more from the Daleks, including an impressive fight between Dalek and Cybermen. Somehow, try as the Doctor might, the Dalek continue to escape annihilation. So now, the Doctor has to battle with them in the depression-era New York, and the whole thing starts in a theater. Ok, I am ALL in on this.

Series 3 - Episode 4 - Daleks in Manhattan

To help me make sure that I don’t miss anything, I bring back my Dalek expert, Jon Soble.

How can you take one of the most annoying real-life problems, like getting stuck in traffic on a freeway? Introduce a Time Lord into the mix. Watching as the Doctor and Martha navigate the problems of New New York in a situation that resembles our current real-life predicaments so closely is yet another fine example of how to good the writing in this show is. Jump in with me as I try to grapple with this Doctor / Martha adventure.

Series 3 - Episode 3 - Gridlock.

To help me navigate the stop-and-go adventure from this week, I call on someone on my friend's list that would have a good handle on this story. I couldn't be in better hands than those of Jamie Kern.

We also get some great Tardis Tidbits from Ashley this week, including an important message to remember for future episodes.

Now that we’ve had a proper introduction, it’s time to take Martha out for an adventure. And what would a Doctor Who adventure be without something extraterrestrial masquerading as something more magical. We also end up in a theater as a cathedral for aliens that have harnessed the power of words. Holy cow, is this episode meant to remind me how much I love the Doctor.

Series 3 - Episode 2 - Shakespeare Code

This week, we have a fun-filled conversation with one of the most passionate Whovians to appear on the podcast. Returning for the first time in Series 3, Jennie Fay Barry joins me to make sense of all this crazy word business.

Let us get this new era in Doctor Who started. New Series, new companion. It still feels weird to have someone other than Rose be there for the Doctor, but if I’ve learned anything from Doctor Who so far is that change is inevitable.

Series 3, Episode 1 - Smith and Jones

While change may be inevitable in the Doctor Who universe, here in the First Time Lord podcast, I very much like tradition, and in keeping with it, Eric Sweetman joins me for the first episode of this series. In this episode, we also welcome Ashley Martin as she brings us some exciting Tardis Tidbits.

In the U.S., the episode we cover in the podcast today is considered part of Season 2. In the U.K., this episode would be Episode Zero of Series 3. However you count/fit this episode into the series, it's an action pack, humdinger of an episode.

Series 3, Episode 0, The Runaway Bride

With so much happening in the show, I definitely could use an expert's help, and Jon Soble steps up with many pages worth of notes.

Also, joining me this week, for what will become a reoccurring segment during Series 3, Ashley Martin drops by with her excellent Doctor Who trivia specific to this episode.

To mark the milestone of having finished two complete Series with two different Doctor regenerations, I have to take a breath and reminisce with someone who, like me, is new to the Doctor Who fandom. My guest and I will share our favorite episodes and moments and stipulate what may be coming up in the subsequent Series.

To speculate, reminisce, investigate and clear up what’s happened so far in Doctor Who, I welcome Shannon Levain to the podcast. If her name sounds familiar, that’s because she’s my wife.

This episode was so good that there were many moments of high emotions and many moments of laughter. But at the core is the relationship between two Doctor regenerations and Rose Tyler. This episode's emotional toll is heavy, but the storytelling is so good that it seems like this was inevitable. On top of it all, we get an epic confrontation between two of the deadliest threats the doctor has ever come across.

Series 2 - Episode 13 - Doomsday

I am delighted to have Ashley Martin and Eric Sweetman join me once again as we wrap up this two-parter.

This is the story of how Rose Tyler died. That’s what Rose’s narration says at the start of the episode. Of course, I hope that it’s not true because she’s my anchor to the show. Since the Doctor regenerated, she’s been with me, showing me that it was ok, that the Doctor was still the same person. This episode has many ups and downs and some big laughs, but it’s just the first part of a two-part story arch. So let us jump right in.

Series 2, Episode 12 - Army Of Ghosts.

To emotionally and intellectually get me thru what promises to be a harrowing story, I have a pair of experts join me. Eric Sweetman and Ashley Martin join me for this week’s conversation.

For an episode with many heavy and dark topics, it plays out very lightly, and weirdly, almost comedic. But the story doesn't shy away from confronting the darker undertones, and in the note that I've come to expect, it will end in the most hopeful way it can.

Series 2 - Episode 11 - Fear Her

To make sense of a very "Twilight Zone" like episode, I am happy to have Jamie Kern join me to make sense of this episode's plotline.

This episode hit me in a very personal spot. Maybe it’s because Elton is “Vlogging” in 2006. Perhaps it’s because there’s a reference to a song whose title is Daniel. Most likely, it’s because it’s about a group of people that follow their obsession/passion and end up becoming a community. If there’s something I’ve found that around the things I become most passionate about, I end up coming across some of the people that have ended up meaning the most to me in life.

Series 2 - Episode 10 - Love & Monsters.

To process and share the feelings that this episode evokes, I am pleased to welcome back Jenni Fay Berry.
