  • Episode 23: How to Message & Market Your Business to the Laid-Back & Indecisive Client with Katie Gibbons

If you’ve had a client who has a warmth about them…but maybe somewhat introverted yet people-focused, you’re working with a S type personality. The S on the DiSC is the Steady-Relator.

Their biggest fear is change…and they love collaborating and being a listening ear to dear friends and colleagues.

Communicating and selling to this personality type can be simple if you focus on these key items:

    • Show how your solution will benefit them and all stakeholders.
    • Allow plenty of time for discussion and answer all of their questions.
    • Don’t ever pressure this type of person for action. Give them plenty of time to evaluate and decide.

Today’s guest is Katie Gibbons, one of my dearest friends and a Financial Wellness Coach. She and I are going to talk about the stressors and motivators of the S type, how to market and sell to the S type, and what she feels are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the S. This conversation is packed full of great information to help you better understand and market your business to one of the largest personality groups you can sell to…the S!

  • Episode 22: How to Message & Market To a Tough Cookie with Special Guest, Keeley Hubbard

If you’ve ever had a client or colleague who seemed a bit intimidating…maybe even a little tough at times…they’re likely a D on the DiSC profile. They’re what we call a dominant type. These people want to WIN more than anything.

Communicating and selling to this personality type can be simple if you focus on a few key items:

    • Give them info in sound bites. Short and sweet.
    • If written, give it in bullet points
    • Once a D has bought from you…STOP SELLING THEM. STOP TALKING. Transition to the close.

Today’s guest is Keeley Hubbard (my favorite D!), and we are getting down to business talking about how you can best message and market your business to the D type.

  • Episode 20: Back to the Basics, Part 5: Top 10 Secrets to Get People To Buy From You

One of the hardest parts of running a business is marketing yourself to the people who you really want to work with…because it’s not just anyone, right?

Today, we are going to cover my top 10 secrets to help you market your business and sell to any type of personality. But, before we dive into the top 10 list, I want you to really think about the type of person you enjoy working with the most.

Who have you worked with in the past that made work fun? Who was enjoyable to be around? What was their name? What about them did you really like?

I want you to name that person and remember as many details as you can about them as we go through this list.

I approach typing my clients with the DiSC profile. The DiSC is a personality assessment tool that has 4 main components: D - Dominant, i - Influencer, S - Steady-relator, C - Conscientious. Let’s dive in!

    • Secret 1 — When communicating with D-Styles, don’t waste their time. They are direct in their communication and want to accomplish things quickly.
    • Secret 2 — When communicating with I-Styles, expect to chat. They love to interact with people in open and engaging ways. Swap stories and opinions.

    • Secret 3 — When communicating with S-Styles, give them the opportunity to create routine and harmony in the situation. They are great at this.
    • Secret 4 — When communicating with C-Styles, deliver logic, data, facts, and information. The opinion is a waste of their time and yours.
    • Secret 5 — The D- and I-Styles prefer a fast pace, while the S- and C-Styles prefer a slower pace.
    • Secret 6 — The I- and S-Styles are open and relational, while the D- and
    • C-Styles are guarded and task-oriented. Make sure to respect their preference.
    • Secret 7 — Everyone can solve problems, but the higher intensity D-Styles are aggressive problem solvers. Give them the opportunity to save the day.
    • Secret 8 — When working with an I-Style, they can be emotional or intuitive. I-Styles choose to influence people with feelings, not facts. So don’t bore them with facts.
    • Secret 9 — The S-Style is an amazing listener and collaborator. Don’t expect them to share their opinion quickly. Respect this boundary and earn their trust.
    • Secret 10 — The C-Style is very cautious in its decision-making process.

Learn to use their cautious style to carefully weigh options.

  • Episode 19: Back to the Basics, Part 4: The Dinosaur In The Room Isn’t Email Marketing - It’s You

If you’re like so many clients I’ve talked to over the years, you may think email marketing is as dead as the dinosaur age…

…and I’m here to tell you that is flawed thinking.

You don’t own your social media platforms (Facebook & Google do…and they can shut down your account whenever they want), but you DO own your email list.

Today, we are going to cover the 3 basic components you need to have in place to get in front and stay in front of your clients.

Email Signature: Just like your social media platforms have a section for your bio, use that bio for your email signature. This is where you include your name, a little about you and how people can find you (i.e., link to your website or opt-in for a "freebie"). If you’re a business owner, you need to communicate with people online who you are, what you do and how you’re an expert in your niche.

Email Marketing: Building an email list ensures your message gets in front of those people who want to hear from you regardless if there's an outage on Instagram. There are TWO steps you can take to get started with email marketing. (1) Pick an email marketing platform (ex. MailChimp) & (2) Email your list weekly with valuable content.

Lead Magnet: Capturing customer email addresses can be challenging. People are very private with their emails. So, in order to capture those emails - you’ve got to have something REALLY awesome as a token for their email address…and we call this a lead magnet.

A lead magnet is a free item or service given away in return for someone's email address.

Think about your favorite retailer. You likely gave your email address in return for 30% off one item...that is a lead magnet. But, here's the catch to lead magnets: your lead magnet has got to be juicy enough (a FABULOUS deal or something really awesome for FREE) for someone to want to give you their email address.

  • Episode 17: Back to The Basics, Part 2: 4 Things You Need To Make Money on Social Media

Let me first say that before you get overwhelmed with some of the material I’m going to cover, please repeat: BRIEF IS BEST. SIMPLE IS GOOD. We are going to cover FOUR concepts:

    1. Pick Your Platform: Pick the ONE social media platform you feel your perfect clients are using and that’s where you need to focus your time and energy. Once you get used to being consistent on one platform, add another.

    2. What to Post Online: When thinking about what to post online, you'll want to consider content pillars. A content pillar is simply the areas of focus - those topics that your business covers in-depth. Think about these 2 questions when determining your content pillars: (1) Who is your audience and what do they want to hear from you? (2) How does your business help your audience?

    3. How to Post Online: The key to being successful in the online space is that you must be CONSISTENT. All posts should include these 3 components: (1) catchy hook (2) caption (3) call to action. The key to a successful posting strategy is VARIETY.

    4. Social Media Bio: All social media platforms have a section for your bio. This is where you include your name, a little about you and how people can find you (i.e., link to your website or opt-in for a "freebie").

Many business owners use the bio section to describe themselves in clever and "cutesy" ways. Don’t do this.

If you’re a business owner, you need to communicate with people online who you are, what you do and how you’re an expert in your niche.

  • Episode 16: Back to the Basics Part 1: How to Connect With People Who Will Buy On Repeat

I’m sure some of you have heard marketing gurus online talk about why it’s important to understand who your perfect client is. In the beginning of launching my business, I watched a few videos about it and thought, “What I do - anyone could be a client.”

Why bother spending time nailing this down?

First of all, not everyone is YOUR perfect client. You have personality characteristics that likely attract certain people and repel others, right?

There are 3 things to know when it comes to identifying and defining your perfect client:

    1. DEMOGRAPHICS: Where do they live...kids, house or apartment, car, do they vacation, what podcasts do they listen to, are they luxury or generic buyers, etc.

    2. PSYCHOGRAPHICS: When they are lying in bed at night scrolling Instagram or Facebook, what are they telling themselves? What is she REALLY saying to herself? We all know that when we are alone, some of the things you say to yourself can be really brutal.

    3. PERSONALITY TYPE: I want you to think about a person that embodies your perfect client. What type are they?

DiSC is an acronym that stands for the four main personality profiles described in the DiSC model: (D)ominance, (i)nfluence, (S)teadiness and (C)onscientiousness.

People with D personalities tend to be confident and place an emphasis on accomplishing bottom-line results.

People with i personalities tend to be more open and place an emphasis on relationships and influencing or persuading others.

People with S personalities tend to be dependable and place the emphasis on cooperation and sincerity.

People with C personalities tend to place the emphasis on quality, accuracy, expertise, and competency.

  • Episode 15: Your Pretty Logo Doesn’t Mean Much If You Don’t Have A Good Message

Three tips to help communicate your unique brand position.

    Let’s cut to the chase.

You’ve spent thousands of $$ on a logo, color palette and brand guide…

    ...and it’s BEAUTIFUL!!!

    But...and this is a BIG but…

...the pretty logo isn’t bringing in the clients, right?

There’s a reason for that, and this may rub you the wrong way...but, it needs to be said.

No one cares about your logo as much as you do.

They just don’t. I know that cuts to the core a bit...it did for me too after I spent $5k on a brand package and it didn’t do anything for new business.

What does bring in new business?

    Getting clear on your message.

Here’s 3 tips to help you draft your unique brand position so you stand out from everyone else out there in your niche….

    1. Talk about values that are important to you. If you’re an attorney who has a big heart for women going through a divorce...talk about it from that angle. Talk about why that is important to you. Do you have stories from your past that would make sense to share about this perspective?
    2. Define who you serve. Who is your perfect client? Like...really...describe your perfect client in great detail. Who has been a perfect client in the past? Think about that person and jot down some details about why you loved working with them. Are they male or female...kids...travel...love to shop...what podcasts do they listen to...etc.
    3. Define the problem you solve with an “I help” statement. This is where you need to get specific...not wordy, though...just specific. Think about it like this: (1) define who you serve (2) define what you do (3) define how you do it.

My “I help” statement goes something like this…. “I help brands [this is the “who I serve” part] scale with executive-level communication and marketing strategy [this is “what I do” part] by creating unique brand positioning [this is the “how I do it” part].”

  • Episode 14: Not Where You Thought You’d Be Halfway Through the Year? Let’s Talk About What You Can Do To Fix It

Stop wasting time and lots of money by not doing a mid-year review to see what’s working and not working in your business from a marketing perspective.

You likely tried some new things in your business this year...some worked, some didn't...some...well, you're not sure yet.

You win some - you lose some, right?

However, you'll lose cash and clients if you don't review and consider a few things moving into the new year.

1️⃣ Take a look at data analytics on your social media platforms. You'll want to see which posts performed well and which ones didn't. This will help you plan your posts for the new year.

Do the same thing with your email marketing too.

2️⃣ Take a look at what your competitors are doing online. Are they doing anything that seems to be landing with their community? Do you see people commenting and engaging with their content?

3️⃣ Have an understanding of the trends in your industry heading into the new year. It's always a good idea to be up-to-date so you're ahead of the game.

4️⃣ Think about your marketing objective. What is the ONE result you would like to see different in your business?
