The Cecil Hotel opened its doors on December 20th, 1924. The hotel initially saw success, remaining a five-star destination until the Great Depression. Not long after, a string of several tragic events occurred, prompting guests to give the hotel the nickname “Hotel Suicide.”

On July 9th, 1993, around 1:40 a.m., three officers from Sedona Police Department in Sedona, Arizona, were dispatched to Coffee Pot Drive after a 911 call from a man named Russell Bennett Peterson came in. A young mother of two died during a domestic altercation, and while her live-in partner was investigated as a suspect and the case was considered a homicide, the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office would eventually refuse to press charges due to an alleged lack of evidence.

This week I spoke with retired Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General, Criminal Investigation division, Bruce Sackman. Bruce led the investigation into Dr. Death (the subject of last week's episode), ultimately bringing Michael Swango to justice.
Bruce is responsible for developing the Red Flag Protocol, which hospitals use today to identify potential clinicians who kill or harm patients. Bruce is truly a pioneer in investigating medical serial killers, and has worked closely with renowned individiuals in the field, such as Dr. Michael Baden.

Dr. Michael Swango, also known as Dr. Death, had his residency rescinded after his internship at Ohio State due to patients dying under his care while he was working in an ambulance, and due to his falsification of internship documents. His faculty and peers expressed their concerns, and yet, nobody alerted police or other medical institutions. After working as an EMT for an Illinois ambulance service, several of his colleagues fell ill after consuming food he brought in, or coffee he prepared.
Dr. Death was arrested for arsenic poisoning and served five years, but he was still able to work as a resident in New York and Zimbabwe following these incidences. After his rotation at the VA in New York, Special Agent Bruce Sackman set his sights on Swango, leading to his capture.
Next week, be sure to listen to my interview with retired Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General, Criminal Investigation division, Bruce Sackman regarding Dr. Death, as well as several other medical serial killers he has investigated and brought to justice. Bruce is truly a pioneer in investigating medical serial killers, and the investigation and arrest of Michael Swango is just one of many cases Bruce has handled.

From spiritual beginnings to allegations of abuse, the passing of a controversial leader, and a cult's quest for reinvention—this week I unpack the rise and fall of Love Has Won and its reincarnation as 5D Full Disclosure. Detailing Amy Carlson's rise, the cult's misdeeds, her death, and their limp into their rebrand following the death of the cult’s Mother God, this episode tells the sad and bizarre tale of a spiritual crash-and-burn.
