Small Things Can Lead to Big Results with Jane Anderson, #38

In this week's episode of the Follower of One Podcast, Mike speaks with Jane Anderson. Jane is currently self-employed as the Chief Encouragement Officer while also being a columnist for BIZCATALYST 360 and a former Social Media Director. Please welcome Jane to the community!

20:45- What we can do to Challenge Ourselves

    Small Deeds, Big Changes

Often our most important deeds as Christians are not groundbreaking or life changing. These deeds are small but extremely effective. Jane speaks about how she goes about encouraging everyone around her in her own way. She practices writing everything down to become intentional on her actions. How do you show God's love? Do you write your ideas down? Jane uses a Joy jar for ideas on what she can do next. Let's think outside the box and bring new ways to show Jesus to the people around you!

    Reacting and How We Remember

What kind of memories do you want to have? I know that most of the time my emotions cloud the correct course of action. Jane makes a very important point in this episode. "Be careful with your moments because they become your memories." This is true for how you treat others and how you treat yourself. We react with God in our hearts so that our course of action is always the right one. When you come against an obstacle, how will you react? Will you decide to listen to God in that moment? When our reactions to moments become our memories, what type of memory will you have? We hope that listening to God will help bring you and the people you work with closer to Jesus!

  • Titles and Authority - Matthew 23:10-11

What does it mean to be a leader? Much is written today about leadership. Should we strive to be a leader? Jesus makes another radical statement here and we seem to pass over it frequently. Jesus calls us to a different life. How does this passage line up with other teachings we hear both inside and outside the church? And what should we do about it?

  • Working Toward Christlikeness - 1 Corinthians 15:10
Even though God's grace saves us and he uses us right where we are, we still have a calling by God to work out our salvation. Paul hints at it here in 1 Corinthians 15:10 when he says "but I labored even more than all of them." Our effort matters.

  • Grace and Effort - 1 Corinthians 15:10
God's grace makes us what we are, and his grace is powerful. Yet he involves us in the process of self-development. But we still have to work? Why? God gives us a role. We're actively responsible and his grace is powerful. How does this balance impact our daily work?

  • First or Last? - Part 2 - Matthew 19:30
Does it matter when you come to Jesus? Mike discusses the calling God has for us. Jesus probably said this sentence several times while the disciples were with him. How can we use this verse to make a difference at work, and with our whole life? Can we put others ahead of ourselves in such a way that Jesus becomes visible? And if we do, does it matter?

  • First or Last? - Matthew 19:30
Jesus tells us the first will be last and the last will be first 4 different times in scripture. What does he mean? Here in Matthew, he ends one story with this sentence and then he ends the very next story with the sentence again. What is the point of this passage and how does it impact our daily work life? What radical difference does Jesus make in this brief thought?

  • Bonus Episode! Experiencing Jesus at Work Luke 6:10-11
When Jesus works, his followers experience joy, but his enemies experience something else. Sometimes I'm jealous or envious when I see Jesus heal someone else or when he makes a difference in someone else's life. Let's ask God to help us trust him and watch with joy as Jesus works. He's working all the time. Our job is to join him and experience his joy.

    Being Intentional

One of our recurring themes here at Follower of One is the act of being "intentional". A key to being successful in any job is your intent. How do you intend to do your job today? Do you have the right mindset? Are you using your skills effectively and intentionally? The same goes for integrating your faith in the marketplace. We must be intentional about how we use our faith at work. Ryan talks with Mike about how God uses our faith to disciple us and when we learn to listen to him, our eyes open to his works more and more. Whether you are taking the Marketplace Mission Trip or in between trips, how are you using your faith directly in how you act? Are you being purposeful in listening to God? Are you being steadfast in using your faith to bloom your professional career? Let us know your experience so we all can learn from it!

    Your Relationship with God

Ryan's foundation in his work, political stance, and relationships are all rooted in his connection with God. Your fellowship with God is the most important thing in your life because it opens up positive influences into everything you say and do. How often do you talk to God? Do you seek him daily? Weekly? Hourly? We have learned here at Follower of One, that our faith is designed to go beyond Sundays. Ryan believes that our faith is not just a systematic machine but a deep relationship with God himself. If you were to reflect on your connection to God, how would you describe it? What brings you to him and pulls you away? We want to be aware of our God at all times!

  • Are You Correctable? - Proverbs 12:1
Are you always right? Do you often think everyone else is wrong? This passage says if we hate correction, we're stupid. From whom do you learn? Are there people who influence you? Does the Bible inform your actions? Do you listen to anyone other than yourself and the Holy Spirit? If you're truly willing to be corrected, to learn from your mistakes, then you can avoid stupidity. Ask God to show you his correction for you, even when you learn it from coworkers or your boss, too!
