John Bigelow Dodge was a larger than life veteran of the First World War, who signed up again for the Second World War and despite being in the Army, ended up at Stalag Luft III to take his place in the Great Escape. We were joined by his biographer, Tim Carroll, to tell us more about the fascinating life of this incredible escaper.

Tony Hoskins delved into the archives to dig out the life story of Douglas Poynter. He was to attempt, and very nearly succeeded in making an evasion from Occupied Norway, before eventually being captured and taken Prisoner of War. One of only two Fleet Air Arm officers involved in the Great Escape, he went on to have an interesting post-war career as well.

Joseph Quinn joined us to tell us the story of Alexander Desmond Neely, known by his middle name, of the Fleet Air Arm. He was an enthusiastic tunneller throughout his time as a prisoner of war, and some of his original documents are held by the "Their Finest Hour " project, run by the University of Oxford.

Harry 'Wing' Day is not just a legend of the Great Escape, but of Second World War Prisoner-of-War escapes in general. A hugely influential individual, he was to make many escape attempts, including from Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp only months after the Great Escape. Romualdas Marcinkus was a pre-war international footballer, and he also wasn't just the only Lithuanian involved in the Great Escape, he was the only Lithuanian in the entire RAF! Tony Hoskins looked at the life of Johnny Stower, a British, Argentinian born, bomber pilot, who made repeated escape attempts, including an unlucky effort in which he was recaptured having made it all the way into Switzerland. He escaped with his close friend, Ivo Tonder, with whom he hoped he might go into business after the war, but sadly he was murdered for his part in the Great Escape.

Ivo Tonder was one of the few Great Escapers from an occupied country to survive the experience, but the Great Escape was far from his only escape, before, during and after the war! 'For You The War Is Over' is a podcast all about the history of Second World War Prisoner-of-War escapes.
First and foremost, these are true adventure stories; tales of human courage and…
In each episode we look at a new POW escape and the story behind how they were captured, what their lives were like in the POW camps, and how they escaped. We also look at the lengths they went to in order to prepare for their escapes, and the challenges they faced and overcame in pursuit of their freedom.
We therefore also try to look at who they were, what drove them, how their escape efforts reflected their personality, and what the individual’s character brought to their own unique escape ‘style’.
