The first 3 articles of faith of the New Apostolic Creed correspond to the Apostolicum – i.e. the doctrinal statements that establish the common beliefs of all Christian denominations created centuries ago by early church councils. The 3rd article of faith states, among other things, the belief in the universality of the church.

The Church of Christ is universal and is rooted in the universality of God, who has these universal characteristics (see 2017 Autumn Vision article “Who is God?”):

• God is perfect – In His perfection, we find all of His other attributes, i.e., He is omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient. This makes us aware that God is a completely different being than us. His perfect ways are above our ways (cf. Isaiah 55:9) and we will not understand them all the time.

• God is love – God is not just loving, He is love. He is the genesis and essence of love - any love in this world is rooted in Him. His love is limitless, unconditional, and never-ending. He loved man so much that, when Adam and Eve fell into sin, He sent His Son to restore His broken relationship with man.

• God is Jesus Christ – God came to earth to show us an example of how we should be, and to make salvation accessible to us, by giving His life as a sacrifice. All of that was done by God Himself as Jesus Christ.
• God is Triune – God is composed of the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We can see God revealing His Trinity in certain passages of the Bible (cf. Matthew 28:19, Genesis 1:26). They are three distinct Persons in complete oneness. God loves our diversity, but He wants us to come into oneness, as He is.

• God is peace – When we have a relationship with God, we begin to learn His purpose for our life, and our future to live with Him for all eternity. This brings security and peace to our lives.

When we realize that these universal aspects bind us together as Christians, we understand that we are connected and we all belong together in the Church of Christ. This makes us confident in our profession of faith.

Los primeros 3 artículos de fe de la Confesión de fe de la INA corresponden al Apostolicum, es decir, las declaraciones doctrinales que establecen las creencias comunes de todas las denominaciones cristianas puestas por escrito hace siglos por los concilios de la iglesia primitiva. El tercer artículo de fe afirma, entre otras cosas, la creencia en la universalidad de la iglesia.

La Iglesia de Cristo es universal y tiene sus raíces en la universalidad de Dios, quien tiene estas características universales (ver el artículo “¿Quién es Dios?” de la Visión de Otoño 2017):

• Dios es perfecto: En Su perfección, encontramos todos Sus otros atributos; es omnipresente, omnipotente, omnisciente. Esto nos hace conscientes de que Dios es un ser completamente diferente a nosotros. Sus caminos perfectos están por encima de los nuestros (ver Isaías 55: 9) y no siempre los entenderemos.

• Dios es amor: Dios no sólo ama, Él es amor. Él es el génesis y la esencia del amor, cualquier amor en este mundo está arraigado en Él. Su amor es ilimitado, incondicional e interminable. Amó tanto al hombre que, cuando Adán y Eva cayeron en pecado, envió a Su Hijo para restaurar Su quebrantada relación con el hombre.

• Dios es Jesucristo: Dios vino a la tierra para mostrarnos un ejemplo de cómo debemos ser, y para hacer que la salvación sea accesible para nosotros, al dar Su vida como sacrificio. Todo eso fue hecho por Dios mismo como Jesucristo.

• Dios es trino: Dios está compuesto por la Trinidad; el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo. Podemos ver a Dios revelando Su Trinidad en ciertos pasajes de la Biblia (ver Mateo 28:19, Génesis 1:26). Son tres Personas distintas en completa unidad. Dios ama nuestra diversidad, pero quiere que entremos en unidad, como Él.

• Dios es paz: Cuando tenemos una relación con Dios, comenzamos a aprender Su propósito para nuestra vida y para nuestro futuro viviendo con Él eternamente. Esto trae seguridad y paz a nuestras vidas.

Cuando nos damos cuenta de que estos aspectos universales nos unen como cristianos, comprendemos que estamos conectados y que todos pertenecemos a la Iglesia de Cristo. Esto nos hace confiar en nuestra profesión de fe.

As followers of Christ we are tasked with making Him known by spreading the gospel to all. For this, we need to be credible witnesses. Chief Apostle Schneider talked about the attributes that contribute to being effective, credible witnesses of Christ:

1. Confident: We show that we are secure in Christ, no matter what. This confidence grows through experiences of faith, when we deepen our knowledge of Christ, through the divine services and reading the Bible, and through our knowledge of our doctrine and Catechism.

2. Resist evil: Once we know Christ, we are confident in fighting evil, as we promised in our Confirmation.

3. Remain humble: We are humble before the Lord. We recognize that everything good comes from Him and we are dependent upon Him.

4. Unbound by material things: We are thankful for the things in life that are granted to us, but we understand that they are not the substance of our life. We must also be unbound from our honor, which sometimes prevents us from asking or granting forgiveness, so that we can really be a repentant sinner, and really practice loving our neighbor.

5. Filled with the love of God: The love of Christ should be in us and shine out of us. When the love of Christ is in us, we are not judgmental or hypercritical.

As Christians, we stumble on all of these things, but we can take our stumbling to God and ask the Lord to help us to be credible witnesses of Him.

Como seguidores de Cristo, tenemos el deber de hacer que todos lo conozcan al difundir el Evangelio a todas las personas. Para esto, debemos ser testigos creíbles. El Apóstol Mayor Schneider habló sobre los atributos que contribuyen a ser testigos creíbles de Cristo:

1. Tener confianza: Mostramos que estamos seguros en Cristo sin importar lo que suceda. Esta confianza crece a través de las experiencias de fe, cuando profundizamos nuestro conocimiento de Cristo mediante los Servicios Divinos y la lectura de la Biblia, así como nuestro conocimiento de nuestra doctrina y el Catecismo.

2. Resistir el mal: Una vez que conocemos a Cristo, tenemos la confianza para luchar contra el mal, como lo prometimos en nuestra Confirmación.

3. Permanecer humildes: Somos humildes ante el Señor. Reconocemos que todo lo bueno proviene de Él, y que dependemos de Él.

5. Llenos del amor de Dios: El amor de Cristo debe estar e irradiar de nosotros. Cuando el amor de Cristo está en nosotros, no juzgamos ni somos hipercríticos.

Como cristianos, nos tropezamos con todas estas cosas, pero podemos llevar nuestros tropiezos a Dios y pedirle al Señor que nos ayude a ser testigos creíbles de Él.

One of the characteristics of a Christian is to give. Giving is an attribute of God, and He wants His children to be like Him. Thus, the basis of giving is our childhood in God. This childhood in God makes us joyful, just as Jesus said to His disciples, “rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). We also learned about that in 2015, with the yearly theme, “Joy in Christ.” This joy does not refer to mere earthly or temporary happiness; it is the divine and eternal joy, and our response is to give, just as we have been recipients of everything God has given us.

This response was displayed by the first congregation of Christians (Acts 2:44-47). They were so joyful to know that they had received the gift of the Spirit and were children of God, that they shared everything they had with one another.

Not only do we become joyful when we recognize that everything good has come from God (Psalm 145:8-9), but also because we realize that we are able to share that with others. When we give out of joy to our brother, sister, or even the church, we are actually offering to God, and God loves a joyful giver! (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Una de las características de un cristiano es dar. Dar es un atributo de Dios, y Él quiere que Sus hijos sean como Él. Por lo tanto, el fundamento de dar es nuestra filiación divina (infancia en Dios). Esta filiación divina nos llena de gozo, tal como Jesús dijo a Sus discípulos: «regocijaos de que vuestros nombres están escritos en los cielos» (Lucas 10:20). No sólo nos llenamos de gozo cuando reconocemos que todo lo que es bueno proviene de Dios (Salmo 145:8-9), sino también porque nos percatamos de que podemos compartirlo con los demás. In society, there are many organizations and individuals who want to help others and are engaged in humanitarian aid. However, Christian serving is a step beyond that. Our motivation to give and help others is Christ – we love Him, we recognize all that He has given us, and we want to follow His example. Christian giving is not only about meeting physical needs (Matthew 25:31-46), but also spiritual needs. We want to encourage others in having a relationship with the Triune God. However, as Christians we should be careful not to get upset if the ones who are receiving the help do not come to Christ – we give freely, just as Christ gave without expecting anything in return.

Jesus expounds on how to give in Matthew 6:3-4, where He says to give silently and from the heart. When Christians give in this manner, they glorify God, allowing others to realize that God is the focus of their giving, and that they give out of love to God and their neighbor (Matthew 5:16).

En la sociedad, hay muchas organizaciones y personas que quieren ayudar a los demás y están involucrados en ayuda humanitaria. Sin embargo, el servir cristiano va un paso adelante. Nuestra motivación para dar y ayudar a los demás es Cristo: lo amamos, reconocemos todo lo que nos ha dado, y queremos seguir Su ejemplo. El dar cristiano no sólo se trata de cubrir necesidades físicas (Mateo 25:31-46), sino también necesidades espirituales. Queremos alentar a los demás a que tengan una relación con el Trino Dios. Sin embargo, como cristianos debemos tener cuidado de no molestarnos si, quienes reciben la ayuda, no se acercan a Cristo: damos libremente, como Cristo dio sin esperar nada a cambio.

Jesús explica cómo dar en Mateo 6:3-4, donde exhorta a dar en silencio y desde el corazón. Cuando los cristianos dan de esta manera, glorifican a Dios, permitiendo que otros se percaten de que Dios es el centro de su dar, y que dan por amor a Dios y a su prójimo (Mateo 5:16).

The kingdom (and its prefiguration) is connected to what the Chief Apostle said in the Pentecost Service: the Holy Spirit gives us the guarantee, the seal, and the pledge. The “pledge” is the “deposit” on eternal life with Jesus that we have through the gift of the Holy Spirit, by which we can begin to enjoy the kingdom of God already here on earth, when we allow the influence of the Holy Spirit to grow in us. When we say in the Lord’s Prayer, “Your kingdom come,” we pray not only for the future kingdom to come, but also that the Lord and His kingdom come to us now. This allows us to not grow weary of waiting for Him because His presence is near to us.

This foretaste of the kingdom happens in two ways: first, when our love for God and for one another grows — made possible because the Spirit of God has poured His love into our hearts (Romans 5:5) —, and second, when we grow in the attributes of Jesus Christ and these are evidenced in the congregation, that is, when we see in our congregation, through the activity of the Holy Spirit, what Jesus said to John the Baptist, “the blind see… the deaf hear” (Matthew 11:5). This is manifested when the communication is open, and the relationships grow deeper because each one accepts the other. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can accept one another by overcoming aggravating differences and realizing that it is good to have differences because they make us stronger as a unit, as a community.

By all of this, individually and as a congregation, we should experience and embrace that call to bring the kingdom now.

El reino (y su prefiguración) se conecta con lo que el Apóstol Mayor dijo en el Servicio Divino de Pentecostés: el Espíritu Santo nos da la garantía, el sello y la caución. La «caución» es el «depósito» en la vida eterna con Jesús que tenemos a través del don del Espíritu Santo, a través de la cual podemos comenzar a disfrutar del reino de Dios ya aquí en la Tierra, cuando permitimos que la influencia del Espíritu Santo crezca en nosotros. Cuando decimos en el Padre Nuestro: «Venga Tu reino», no sólo oramos para que el reino futuro venga, sino también para que el Señor y Su reino vengan a nosotros ahora. Esto permite que no desfallezcamos al esperarlo, porque Su presencia está cerca de nosotros.

Esta primera impresión del reino ocurre de dos maneras: primero, cuando nuestro amor a Dios y entre nosotros crece —hecho posible debido a que el Espíritu de Dios ha derramado Su amor en nuestros corazones (Romanos 5:5)—, y segundo, cuando crecemos en los atributos de Jesucristo y estos se hacen evidentes en la congregación, es decir, cuando vemos en nuestra congregación (a través de la actividad del Espíritu Santo) lo que Jesús le dijo a Juan el Bautista: «Los ciegos ven […], los sordos oyen» (Mateo 11:5). Esto se manifiesta cuando la comunicación es abierta y las relaciones se hacen cada vez más profundas porque cada uno acepta al otro. Miracles defy logic and reason. We can read about miracles in the Old and New Testaments, but they can also be experienced in the modern day. In a spiritual sense, for example, it is a miracle that all of our sins are forgiven. In a natural sense, from time to time, a miracle also happens. The main reason God used miracles in the Old and New Testaments was to show the presence of God. There are different categories of miracles according to their meanings:

1. Casting out demons
This showed that when Christ was near, the evil spirits had to run away from Him because in His presence was God. It also happens with the Holy Spirit (cf. James 4:7).

2. Healings
Jesus wanted to show the people that God is a God of compassion and love, and by healing their natural bodies, He showed that He cared for them. This was also meant to reflect that His real purpose is to heal the truly terrible disease in humankind, sin. But for this to happen, one has to believe. Finally, Jesus wanted to show that He is the One (cf. Matthew 11:2-6), reflecting the prophecy of Isaiah in the Old Testament.

3. Raising the dead
Not only was Jesus moved by the deaths of those He raised, He was also demonstrating that He is the Lord of this realm and of the realm of the dead. Death cannot impede salvation (cf. Mark 5:41-42; Luke 7:11-16; John 11:35-44).

4. Nature
The Trinity has always been. Jesus Christ, as part of the Trinity, was there when the earth was created. He has dominion over the creation (cf. Mark 4:35-41).

5. Feeding multitudes
This is also a reflection of the Old Testament (cf. 2 Kings 4:42-44), and it shows, first of all, that God is present and God is a God of abundance (cf. Matthew 14:20). Deeper than that, He is showing that He is the bread (John 6:35), He is the Provider, and He gives more than is needed.

Jesus came for our spiritual life. His purpose is to lead people to salvation.

Los milagros desafían la lógica y la razón. Podemos leer acerca de los milagros en el Antiguo y en el Nuevo Testamento, pero también se pueden experimentar en nuestros días. En un sentido espiritual, por ejemplo, es un milagro que todos nuestros pecados sean perdonados. En un sentido natural, de vez en cuando, un milagro también ocurre. 3. Resucitación de los muertos
No sólo Jesús se conmovió por las muertes de aquellos que resucitó, Él también estaba demostrando que Él es el Señor de este ámbito y del ámbito de los muertos. La muerte no puede impedir la salvación (ver Marcos 5:41-42; Lucas 7:11-16; Juan 11:35-44).

4. Naturaleza
La Trinidad siempre ha sido. Jesucristo, como parte de la Trinidad, estuvo ahí cuando la Tierra fue creada. Él tiene dominio sobre la creación (ver Marcos 4:35-41).

5. Alimentación de las multitudes

The Last Judgement is neither a threatening time nor a surprise. From the beginning of time, God (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) has told us, “This is how I want you to be.” The apostolate also teaches how we should be to fit into the kingdom of God, according to the teachings of Jesus Christ – we need to grow in His mind and be like Him. During the thousand years of peace, all people are called to be like Him, too. But He also gave man his own free will, - He wanted to see, “Will man choose Me?” So, at the very end, God will ask all people, “Who do you believe? Who do you love? Who do you want to be with?”

When God incarnated in Jesus Christ, He opened the way of salvation by giving His life for us - He did all of this to show us that He loves us and He wants us to be with Him, but He also wants to know if we choose Him. If we choose to love Jesus Christ, we reflect this love by loving our neighbor through our actions. These are the attributes of people who want to be in the kingdom of God. God has been telling us that from the beginning of time. We should care not only for our neighbors’ eternal needs, but also their physical needs (cf. Leviticus 23:22, Isaiah 58:6-7, James 2:14-17).

Because we love God, we grow in our love for those around us, and when we see them in need, we react to them naturally, like in Matthew 25, when they asked the Lord, “when did we [do it]?” (cf. Matthew 25:31-46). They just did it naturally. They adopted the nature of Christ in their life, which is both one of our member expectations in the THRIVE acronym, “Transform your nature, using Jesus as your example,” and a part of being faithful to Christ, “follow His example.”

El Juicio Final no es ni un momento amenazante ni una sorpresa. Desde el comienzo de los tiempos, Dios (el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo) nos ha dicho: «Así es como quiero que seas». El apostolado también enseña cómo debemos ser para entrar en el reino de Dios, conforme a las enseñanzas de Jesucristo: necesitamos crecer en Su sentir y ser como Él. Durante el milenario reino de paz, todos serán llamados a ser como Él también. Pero también le dio al hombre su propio libre albedrío, Él quería ver: «¿El hombre me elegirá a Mí?». Simplemente lo hicieron de manera natural. Adoptaron la naturaleza de Cristo en sus vidas, lo cual es tanto una de nuestras expectativas de nuestros miembros en el acrónimo THRIVE: «Transforma tu naturaleza, usando a Jesús como ejemplo», como una parte de ser fieles a cristo, «Seguir su ejemplo».

Giving is an attribute of the Triune God, thus, it is an attribute of Christian behavior, and faith is a necessary foundation to be a Christian. We give because we believe:

- In God, the Father, who is the Creator of everything, including ourselves. All that we have is His.
- In Jesus Christ, who is the Savior and gave His life as a sacrifice for us to have the opportunity of salvation, and have an example of how to give.
- In the Holy Spirit, who is our Helper and Adviser. He shows and teaches us about Jesus, about our salvation, and about the kingdom of God. He inspires us to help and give to others.
- In the apostolate of Jesus Christ and their mission to teach and baptize all souls in His name. Therefore, we believe in the church of Christ, the assembly of believers – from all times – that love Christ and desire to live like Him. We give because we believe in this mission that Jesus gave the Church.
- In the future that Jesus has promised us – to share His glory with us if we remain faithful. We are secure with Him, knowing that what we give in this temporal life originated from God. By His grace He will give me eternal life and infinitely more.

If we truly believe in the Triune God, we trust in His work and ways. As we grow in our love of God, we want to be with Him, and to be with Him, we have to be like Him. Thus, as giving is an attribute of God, in faith to Him, we want to do the same.

Si verdaderamente creemos en Dios Trino, confiamos en Su obra y en Sus caminos. A medida que crecemos en nuestro amor a Dios, queremos estar con Él, y para estar con Él, debemos ser como Él. Puesto que “dar” es un atributo de Dios Trino, en fe a Él, queremos hacer lo mismo.

Blessing, as the Chief Apostle once defined it, is, “any action of God that opens the way to bring you closer to Him.” Thus, it is something that the Lord allows that gives us the opportunity to come closer to Him.

Blessings cannot be counted by the things one thinks are good in life, or by material things – the Lord can give that, but He also allows difficult things in our lives. We have the option to take that opportunity. For example, the time when Jacob wrestles with a godly being in order to get a blessing (cf. Genesis 32:24-30). One can struggle and strive for it. That is what Jacob did. He realized that he wanted to be closer to God and receive something from Him, and the Lord granted it to Jacob in various unusual events throughout his life. This means that we cannot earn it – we want God’s blessing because we want to be closer to Him, but we do not deserve it, it is just by God’s grace.

A word that relates to “blessing” is “blessed.” This points to the Beatitudes where Jesus says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted…” (cf. Matthew 5:3-10). With the Beatitudes, Jesus indicates a shift. In the Old Testament, ofttimes, the blessing was viewed in a certain way (e.g. when David won the battles against his enemies, God’s blessing was with him). Jesus shows a different way – it is not all good things that happen, and that does not mean one is not close to God. One cannot determine how blessed one is according to their material condition on earth (e.g. thinking a rich man is “more blessed” than the one who is poor). Struggling is accepting what God puts in our lives, realizing that if He allowed it, then He is blessing us in some way because His motive is to bring us closer to Him.

God is always with us and He always wants us to be with Him. That means sometimes we will have to struggle and suffer, but Jesus Christ did that; He submitted to the will of the Father (cf. Luke 22:42).

Bendición, como el Apóstol Mayor la definió una vez es: «cualquier acción de Dios que abre el camino para acercarnos más a Él». Por lo tanto, es algo que el Señor permite y que nos da la oportunidad de acercarnos a Él.

Las bendiciones no pueden contarse según las cosas que uno piensa que son buenas en la vida, ni por cosas materiales; el Señor puede dar eso, pero también permite que sucedan cosas difíciles en nuestras vidas. Tenemos la opción de aprovechar esa oportunidad. Por ejemplo, cuando Jacob luchó con un ser divino para obtener una bendición (ver Génesis 32:24-30). Uno puede luchar y esforzarse por ella. As Christians, if we want to serve in the mind of Jesus, we have to give up something, and sometimes suffering is involved. Often times, we consider this to be a sacrifice. The definition of sacrifice is, “an offering of food, objects or the lives of animals to a higher purpose, in particular divine beings.” It also means, “surrendering of something for the sake of something else.” We have to give up something; however, the magnitude and depth of Jesus’ sacrifice cannot be compared to our understanding of the word. He gave up being in heaven with His Father, to come to earth and live a life in which He experienced suffering and torture, and then to bear all the sins of mankind, giving His life for us.

This is the once brought, eternally valid sacrifice. The root of the word sacrifice, “sacra,” has to do with holiness. When we consider that, we begin to understand; there is nothing we can do to come into God’s nearness or obtain His grace – Jesus Christ did it for us, out of love. He did it once, and it is for all times and for all people that want it, and come to it (see Hebrews 9:28).

Como cristianos, si queremos servir con el sentir de Jesús, debemos renunciar a algo y, a veces, el sufrimiento está implicado. A menudo, consideramos que esto es un sacrificio. La definición de sacrificio es: «una ofrenda de alimento, objetos o las vidas de animales para un propósito superior, en particular seres divinos».
