I can identify a job hunter from across a room. That might sound like hyperbole, but it’s not – if I didn’t have this magnetic attraction to job seekers, I’d probably still be doing national security work at the Pentagon. The fact that I kept finding myself being drawn into conversations with people who were looking to change their careers convinced me I needed to make my own career shift into coaching.

One of the first things I noticed as a young business person was how awkward and uncomfortable business people become the minute they run into a sticky human situation. They fall apart, if we are honest. Most business people can’t make it through a simple conversation if the topic veers into even mildly sticky territory.

It’s been a month since retail brands and marketing leaders flocked to Austin for the annual SXSW Interactive Festival. The dust of nightly parties and networking events has settled, the breakfast taco hangover has passed and most of us are back in the routine of our day-to-day duties. Although most if not all of us were taught to write our resumes using horrible, zombie language like “Motivated self-starter with a bottom-line orientation” it is easy to see that if your resume sounds like everybody else’s resume, no one will notice your brilliance! You have to stand out, right in your resume. You have to sound like yourself. You can’t pitch your resume into anonymous online recruiting portals. Those things don’t work.

The United Nations’ annual World Happiness Report ranks 147 countries according to citizens’ happiness levels. The analysis takes a look at a variety of factors, including health, life expectancy and freedom from corruption in government and business. Conducted by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the Earth Institute at Columbia University, the study also looked at how people evaluated their own lives, on a scale of zero to ten.

We all know someone who crumbles at the first sign of pressure. Whether it’s at the gym, ball field, home or work. Rather than finding the will to fight through adversity to achieve a goal, they give up and call it a day. This is not a trait you want in employees. But it’s hard to know if someone has the grit and determination to finish a challenging project or the resilience to push forward when something goes wrong just from an interview.
