Then always be a unicorn.” I saw that quote on a birthday card that was on display next to a card that said, “Let’s get drunk.” I was searching for a card for my daughter’s 23rd birthday.

There is a saying that goes, you can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time. Well people, the gig is up! It’s pretty obvious these days that companies are trying to keep up with the Joneses or in this case the Googles of the world. Businesses are spending billions of dollars building out company playgrounds for their employees and yet employees are more dissatisfied with their employers than ever.

Dear Liz, I am interviewing for Sales Director positions. I wasn’t job-hunting but I learned about an opportunity through an ex-colleague of mine and I got to the last round of interviews. After that recruiting process began I sent a Pain Letter to a hiring manager at another firm and I have an upcoming interview at that company, too. Here is my concern.

For consumers the future of customer service cannot come soon enough. The customer experience landscape is ripe for disruption. Companies are slowly making progress toward more seamless and simpler customer experiences. Today only a select few companies leverage all the technology at their fingertips to enable customers to use the technology they use daily in their personal lives when dealing with the brand. A company on the forefront includes Amazon.

Some workplace questions are difficult to answer, but this one is not: Why do employees quit their jobs? They do it because they are undervalued. They leave their jobs because they are kept in the dark and unappreciated. The biggest problem most managers have is that they neglect their employees. They say to themselves, “No one has complained to me about anything, so everything must be fine in my department” when it isn’t.

According to the New York Federal Reserve, 86% of students choose to go to college to improve their job prospects, but 44% of graduates are underemployed. And student debt makes the need to get a job upon graduation even more important. According to Student Loan Hero, Americans owe nearly $1.3 trillion in student loan debt, spread out among about 43 million borrowers. The average 2015 graduate had over $35,000 in student debt.

Our world is run by leadership decisions, good or bad. We learn that the FBI spent about 1.3 million to hack an iPhone, when director James Comey finally divulges just enough information. A top talk show host steps off the set in a legitimate huff and the network is caught short. Google the word “leader” and you’ll get, on a given day, some 1,070,000,000 results — partially because someone made decisions in what we’d see.

Is the propensity to want to speak in public a healthy personality trait? Psychologists and my wife talk about the need for drama in everyday life – and it’s not considered a good thing by those wise people. It means the tendency to up the ante, raise the voice, and hurl the crockery around when discussing something that could be simple if someone would just keep his temper.
