Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), is a naturally occurring fatty acid derivative made in the body and found in small amounts in foods.

PEA was first discovered in 1957 by scientists at Merck Sharp & Dohme, who isolated it from egg yolk, peanut meal, and soy lecithin. They found that PEA had anti-inflammatory properties in guinea pigs.

However, PEA's role as a potential therapeutic agent was not widely recognized until 1993, when Rita Levi-Montalcini and her colleagues published research that suggested PEA has anti-inflammatory properties. Levi-Montalcini's group termed PEA an autocoid local injury antagonist (ALIA), and suggested that it acts locally to counteract injury.

Multiple studies have demonstrated that PEA improves all sorts of pain. For example, a 2023 analysis of 11 studies found that PEA improved pain of various conditions, including muscle and joints, nerves, gynecological, and digestive. In terms of joint pain, a high-quality study demonstrated that PEA significantly reduced adult joint pain compared to placebo. Moreover, 8 clinical trials demonstrated that PEA was effective for low back pain, sciatica, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Even migraine headache pain was shown in published research to be improved with PEA.

Lipid mediators help to balance the immune, nervous, and endocrine systems, affecting pain pathways related to inflammation. But unfortunately, due to changing diets, many of us do not get the nutrition and activity we need to make enough PEA ourselves.

We have a great episode planned and will focus on Men’s Health with a highlight on Hormones. Men are just as vulnerable as Women to having hormonal imbalances or even hormonal issues, but it is just not talked about enough.  Today we will talk about who, what, when and where.

-Why do men need testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone that plays a vital role in men’s health. Low or deficient levels are associated with fatigue, weight gain, muscle and bone mass loss, low libido, depression, impotence, poor memory, and other symptoms.
There are many reasons why men can have low testosterone.

-How common is Low Testosterone?
Low or deficient testosterone in males is problematic in America. According to the Cleveland Clinic, low testosterone affects almost 40% of men aged 45 and older! Testosterone deficiency negatively affects a man’s quality of life and is a known risk factor for early death. Testosterone levels are at their highest levels by early adulthood and then decrease by 1% to 2% a year beginning in the 40’s.

-What causes Low Testosterone?

I find that testosterone deficiency or sub-optimal testosterone levels are common in both men and women. If your testosterone levels are low, then you may experience:

Fatigue
Low libido
Poor memory and concentration
Loss of muscle mass
Loss of bone mass
Increased body fat
Poor exercise recovery
Elevated cholesterol levels
Depression
Decreased resistance to stress
Erectile Dysfunction (men)
Increased heart disease risk

-Any Supportive Supplements for Men dealing with lower Testosterone levels?
There are not many supplements proven to increase men’s testosterone levels. However, a unique extract of the ayurvedic herb known as ashwagandha has been shown in several studies to elevate male testosterone levels.
The ashwagandha extract known as KSM-66 was shown in a recent study to significantly increase blood testosterone levels and sexual well-being. The study involved fifty participants with low sexual desire who were given KSM-66 at a dose of 600 mg or placebo daily. Outcomes were measured with a questionnaire and blood testosterone levels at the beginning and end of the 8-week study. Compared to the placebo, the KSM-66 demonstrated significant benefits.
The ashwagandha extract in this study is the same one I use in Testosterone Health  (which has 675 mg of KSM-66 per serving). This supplemental approach gives men the potential to improve their libido and testosterone levels without prescription testosterone.
