Kate share her knowledge answering questions such as - where does the sand come from ? Moving Dunes, The Christmas Tree Scheme, Marram grass which is so important to the sand dunes and doesn’t like being stood on. Sand movement.

Is the beach sand level high or low ! Was it the Victorian revetments that caused / contributed to coastal erosion ? The coast line is moving in and out - it has been for a millennia.

Kate is a font of knowledge. The dunes are explained by Kate Martin - it’s great to hear and understand a clear explanation of this natural phenomena .

Kate explains the 2 estates that were given to the National Trust to manage. The 2 estates were

the Blundell Family Estate and the Formby Family Estate.

The species of pine tree. The interview covers Kate talking about the pinewoods, the species of trees in Formby’s woods - Corsican pine, Maritime pine, Lodge poll pine, Black pine. Where the species originated from keeps us very entertained. Why some are removed and why others are encouraged. Mainly to do with the red squirrels.

Formby is the core of Red Squirrel stronghold. A unique native endangered species. Formby Pinewoods is a perfect natural sanctuary for them. Now managed by the National Trust.

A plantation

Finally when visiting Formby Pinewoods. You can see the layout of the pine trees are clearly a plantation. To see these orderly lines of mature pine trees, visit and see the woods behind St Luke’s Church in Formby . It’s quite strange - in the dappled light you can almost feel transported back in time to the late 1800s.

The St Peter’s Players performance of Voices from the Churchyard written by Ted Williams. Characters include William Brown, Dr Sumner, Abraham Patterson, Ruby Moores, to name a few are buried in St Peter’s Graveyard in Formby. This brings to life amazing characters that lived in Formby . The recording was recorded in real time - please excuse some of the unavoidable interference and traffic that was captured. We open this podcast with Gerry Molumby singing one of Percy French’s songs / ballads - the words are poetic and amazingly relevant to life today.

Percy French Irish singer, poet, water colour painter. ‘He drew lightening sketches’ 1898 - to raise money for Holy Trinity Church. He came to visit his cousin a Vicar of Holy Trinity Church Formby often. The Holy Trinity Vicar then lived on Wicks Lane Formby. The Formby Civic Soceity has worked with Councillor Joe Riley and Councillor Irving of Sefton Council and Formby Parish Council to get a Blue Plaque commemorating Percy French placed outside the house.

Percy French died in Formby whilst visiting his cousin and is buried in Formby’s St Luke’s graveyard.

Formby Civic Soceity organised on 24 January 2022, a memorial service to celebrate Percy French’s life work and songs - his legacy. This is the recording from the celebration.

You can see the Blue Plaque on Wicks Lane Formby -a stunning redbrick house by the metal footbridge, crossing the railway line.
